So last year I was working on a standard deck that was fairly budget. The deck was Sultai (BUG) and had a large energy theme to it. I usually play multiplayer with my friends using cards across all ages of magic, but recently we've been getting into the new stuff. I wanted to bring this deck back for critiquing because it was a favorite of mine to use, but it still needed some work done on it.
As you can see, it's fairy budget; the mana base is pretty basic. I can't find Aether Hubanywhere. I'm running all creatures just to have maximum potential for my late game Demon of Dark Schemes, who is pretty much the centerpiece of the deck, acting as a swiss army knife win condition. The whole point of the deck is to ramp for mana and energy early on until I can get a few threats that can swing the game heavily in my favor. Aethersquall Ancient and Demon of Dark Schemes provide pseudo-board wipes that can help get rid of things.
Without breaking the budget, how should I make a Demon of Dark Schemes deck for the new Standard environment? My deck has not been upgraded in some time, and with all these new cards from Amonkhet, Hour of Devastation, and Ixalan, I'm not sure what direction to take this deck in. All help is appreciated!
I don't think I would run so many creatures. Seems a non-bo to kill all your own creatures with the Demon. I think against most decks, you'll have plenty of creatures in opponents' GYs to bring back, and, if not, 5/5 Fliers are hard to deal with in general. I think the only other creature I would run if I were you is the Flying Whales. The rest of the deck would be control and cards to increase the energy count. I think I would add Red to get access to Harnessed Lightning and also sweepers like Sweltering Suns. The slow nature of control decks, I don't think you really have to spend mana on the mana base, either. For budget control, I think tapped lands like Highland Lake are perfectly fine, and they're super cheap.
You'll also want to go up to 26 lands if you switch to control. Hitting a land drop every turn is so key.
