Hi. I haven't played in a long time, the better part of a decade really, and I'm just now jumping back into Magic. I'm dipping my feet in with a nice cheap deck. I haven't had a chance to test it yet, but I plan on taking it to FNM in a couple of weeks. I think this deck will have some early beats followed up with some late game burn to finish off opponents. I bought this today on SCG and all cards, sideboard included, cost a grand total of $25 with shipping.
I personally would like to think I picked most of these cards for their quality and not their price. The deck has some great early game synergy. The early landfall drops plus the land acceleration can definitely put on some good early game damage. With the right draw you can really hit hard in the face.
+ +
First turn Scythe Leopard with a 2nd turn Swell of Growth putting out Evolving Wild and getting another land and you're swinging with a 6/6 on Turn 2. That's a great way to start the game.
In the mid/late game you can rely on landfall damage to chip away at your opponent's life.
Blighted Woodland and Evolving Wilds will bring multiple landfall triggers. You can also use Mina and Denn to get multiple landfall shenanigans. That trample might allow you to connect for a few damage too.
Finally, the finishing touch of the deck is Harness the Storm
Late game when you've stalled out of your early fury, this helps get much more mileage from the cards you draw into. Draw land accel cards and you can cast multiple times for multiple landfall triggers. If you hit burn, you can cast burn multiple times to easily finish off opponents. And since you spent the first part of the game getting extra lands out, you should be able to cast your instants and sorceries multiple times without a problem.
I haven't played, but from what I've read, the meta is flooded with white human and bant company. The land destruction in the sideboard is for the Bant. Those decks are running 3 colors, 4 if you count the colorless eldrazi splashes, killing lands really seems like it can ruin their day. We'll see. The humans, it's just more creature kill and Bonds of mortality to try to take care of Avacyn.
I haven't. Working adult, family, schedule. you know. We're going on a mini vacation this week, but i'll take it out next week to FNM. I'll be sure to post results.
There are no results yet. I'll be taking it to FNM this week.
I haven't played magic since before Landfall was a thing, so I don't know how many lands or how much card draw is required. I will say in sitting down with the deck and drawing up some hands, I haven't felt like I need more card draw or more lands. Harness the Storm and Mina and Denn, Wildborn go a long way for that. It's nice to get multiple casts from instants and sorceries when top decking. Also, being able to replay 2 lands per turn if I don't draw a land for the turn is very helpful.
Sorry for being late on this. The problem is, I don't really have anything to report. We had low turnout on Friday, so no standard rounds. I did hang around the LGS and play some casual games though. The results were disappointing. I played 8 games, and 6 of them were woefully mana screwed. The list I played is similar to the original in this post, except -1 Akoum Hellkite and 23 lands. I don't think they reflected on the deck as much as my own personal bad luck, lol.
4 of the games, I never got off 2 mana. 3 of those games were against some very slow casual decks and lasted almost 10 turns. So basically 2 lands in the top 17/18 cards. Joking with my opponent, I promised I wasn't playing with 12 lands.
The other 2 mana screwed games I was hopelessly flooded. When I wasn't drawing into lands, I was drawing into land tutors. In one game against a competitive BW midrange deck, I ended the game with 13 lands in play and 3 in the GY (Evolving Wilds and Blighted Woodlands).
In the 2 games when I was able to draw what I would consider a normal draw, the deck performed very well. Even in the beginning of that 13 land fiasco, the deck started off strong before stalling out and me topdecking lands and land tutors. The deck worked well with strong early plays and either a Harness the Storm/burn or Mina and Denn, Wildborn + Makindi Sliderunner/Akoum Hellkite combos to finish off.
I may take it to another FNM, but there's another deck I'm wanting to build and test. We'll see what I end up doing.
