Hi so after a few weeks of contemplating whether to start playing magic or not i decided to do it cause i'm starting to get bored of playing cardfight vanguard and wanted to play a new ccg. After researching a bit i decided to stick with a budget of $100 dollars per block and just play at FNMs for fun. I was just wondering if anyone had an idea on how to upgrade the mardu raiders intro pack or if i should even get it cause some people said intro packs aren't really that good so its either singles or intro pack for my first standard deck. The idea of mardu aggro appeals to me so if anyone has a good decklist that if possible only uses cards from KoT that would be really great. Thank you
Singles, singles, singles. My suggestion is to not limit yourself to ktk. Standard literally just rotated. Playing 1 set vs 5 is not advised regardless of budget. What i do advise is to not play 3 colors. So no khans wedge. Fewer colors equals cheaper deck. You can easily get a decent mono color deck for less than 50 bucks that will reasonably competitively endure through the standard season if you play aggro. Midrange would cost a bit more. Control i would not advise with the current card pool. So why don't you tell us what kind of deck type you'd like to play and why?
Well in whatever game i play i always go for aggro. I like finishing games fast and in mtg i think i need to do that before the opponent can bring out the big guns and squash me. so a burn deck or goblin deck would be good i guess? Reason why i wanted a mardu deck is because the art is nice especially the roughrider so for me Art> Fun> Top Tier. Why i want to limit myself to KTK is because i want to start fresh and use the cards as long as possible before rotation, does that make sense?
If you limit yourself to ktk, you have an absurdly small card pool and are forced into a bad 3 color deck. You could spend 300 dollars on an all ktk deck and it would still be worse than a 15 dollar budget deck encompassing the current standard. It is one thing to say "I only want money cards from Khans". It is something else to say "I won't spend for some 10-20 cents cards from the last block that are the difference between a remotely effective deck and not".
I'm not saying to not play what you like but if you do limit yourself to khans, what you will end up with will not even resemble an aggro deck. Midrange would beat you in a straight race. If art is the prevailing point, then play what you want but forget aggro. If you want to play a deck that will functionally run against constructed decks, you will need to understand that some degree of expansion will be necessary. You don't need to spend a lot of money persay from older sets but you will need lower cost cards to play aggro and khans only has so many... which is not very many.
You can make an intro pack better? Sure. Is it efficient for building a good constructed deck? No. You pay 15ish bucks when you could comparatively buy all the pieces that you'd get out of it for a 1-2 color deck for about a dollar. It does have crackling doom, an above average rare, but even if you got that, it would only add 5 bucks to the gotten value.
parameters? i dont really know what cards i want besides Mardu Roughrider and maybe Goblin Rabblemaster cause i heard he's good. As long as its Red or Mardu anythings fine really. Being new i dont really know what to want.
Obviously, running mono red (also known as rabble red) would be cheaper and more effective than mardu which would require a larger investment to be more than a casual deck. Of course, that may actually appeal to you. I don't know. So which do you want?
so thats what rabble red means, thanks. can i like see both decklists? kinda interested in both. I know Mardu is gonna be expensive cause fetchlands, sarkhan, bloodsoaked, stormbreath etc.
Sure. I'll type them up on an actual computer a little later. Rabble red is basically mono red aggro starring goblin rabblemaster. A mardu aggro deck wouldn't run any of those for a 100 dollar budget, I think. Some not at all. I think I'd be using mostly painlands for fixing and building around mardu ascendancy swarm with a red heavy base. Probably rw with just enough black for a few goodies.
but if it isn't $100 budget a typical mardu aggro would run those right? if its possible dont add any abzan cards, for some reason i dont really like them :/ but if not i can live with it and thanks lots
This is right at the $100 mark or so and fairly powerful. If you wanted to add more to the budget then a full set of Thoughtseize would do it. Otherwise, this list have evasive and bestow creatures if the game gets a little late. The creature base is very flexible in utility.
Red players don't care about their life. You're sacrificing a bit of yours to deal more to them. You're meant to kill them fast, so your life isn't a concern.
And let's look at it this way. It can pump itself up to kill bigger creatures or trade at a cost. Also, if Firedrinker is your turn one play, and your opponent plays Sylvan Caryatid his turn two, you just got a free 2-3 damage on him. Just swing in with your mana open and they wouldn't dare block the Satyr with their Caryatid, because you can just pump and kill their mana dork. Speaking of mana dorks, don't be afraid to attack into them. A majority of the time they don't have the resources to risk them in the first few turns.
