I wouldn't go out and pay $300 for a deck. I think you should start with something more budget oriented like a RDW / Sligh kind of deck. I'd check out the competitive forums for some of those deck lists. Some are ~$25-$30 last I checked and fairly competitive. Playing an aggro deck will help you learn the ins and outs of combat too. I think this is important these days, since Wizards is really pushing creatures lately. I play Control, but typically only do this because I think it's slightly more complicated and think the weight of your decisions are much heavier.

Hey there. I'm a huge fan of White Weenie, and I run the White budget thread in this forum. What type of playstyle suits you? With $300, you can play anything you want. Do you prefer aggro, tempo, midrange, or control? Generally speaking those are the four archetypes in Standard. Also, which colors do you prefer?
I agree that aggro is the way to go for a beginner. With that said and your budget size you can build whatever in standard which is a good place to start. That being said I personally wouldn't go splurging to hard on anything from Return to Ravnica block or in M14. In 3 months those cards rotate out of standard. I think monored aggro/boss sligh or a monoblack aggro is relatively affordable and leaving you extra for M15 and Khans.
