New to Magic: the Gathering and was wondering what Event deck I should invest in for standard format. I prefer using a deck that doesn't have cards rotating out during M15 set release.
All you have to do is find one of the event decks that has the smallest amount of M14 cards in it. This probably means one of the Theros block event decks. However, a better plan would simply be to build a deck using none of M14, which ensures your deck stays in one piece once M15 hits.
I don't recommend an event deck right now to a newbie, as far as rotation goes. All the M14 and Return to Ravnica block (Return to Ravnica, Gatecrash, and Dragon's Maze) cards will be rotating come Fall when Khans of Tarkir comes out, and there aren't any event decks right now that don't contain a lot of those cards. M15, if it has an event deck, may be the answer, but it's too soon to tell, as they haven't released a decklist yet.
If you really want to learn the game, I'd suggest starting out with the Duels of the Planeswalkers game (PC, XBox, and PS versions exist for the 2014 version). I recommend the 2014 version for now. Don't buy the full version, just the simplest version, and complete the campaign mode and challenges, and that should help familiarize you with a lot of the rules of the game, phases of turns, etc. as well as see some different deck archetypes. Most of the decks in it aren't worthwhile in any real competitive formats (and legal in few, if any, due to wonky deck designs not caring about legality in different formats) but they do help familiarize yourself with different deck types, so I'd recommend trying them all out, and trying to get a feel for how they each play against a few different computer opponents in the game. It's a good way to familiarize yourself about basic things about Magic the Gathering without aggravating a friend with stupid turn order mistakes and stuff.
As far as buying actual cards, I'd hold off until M15 is released and buy a M15 Deck Builder's Toolkit ($20 once it is released). Most of the cards in the M14 Deck Builder's Toolkit will leave Standard legality with rotation (other than ones that get reprinted) so now is the wrong time for an M14 one. Deck Builder's Toolkits include about 20 of each basic land, a booster pack from the last 3 sets (in M15 it'll be Theros block's sets) and one booster pack from the set involved, as well as an assortment of semi-random cards to help fill out a starter collection. Once you have that, you can ask here for a budget decklist (give us a budget here on the forums) that includes only M15 and Theros block cards (asking for one that will survive rotation) and buy or trade for whatever remaining singles you didn't get in the toolkit to build your first Standard deck. I don't really recommend the Event Decks for new players, they don't follow good deck design principles, and you can often get a better deck for less buying common and uncommon singles if someone who knows what they are doing designs the deck.
