AEtherworks Marvel has been banned. No other bans. I for one welcome our new zombie overlords. Due to the adoption of a State of Standard thread that includes this subject matter, this thread is locked. -hoser2
I think this is the most cards banned in Standard since the original Mirrodin block.
That doesn't necessarily mean all that much, as the only bannings between that and this were Jace and Stoneforge.
However, if we only go by the number of times there was a banning announced (i.e. not the number of cards banned, the number of announcements of a card being banned--so Smuggler's Copter/Emrakul/Reflector Mage counts as one, Felidar Guardian counts as one, and Aetherworks Marvel counts as one), this is actually three banning announcements in the shortest amount of time in Magic history. Even Urza's Saga spread out its three announcements over a greater period of time. Granted, much of this has to do with the fact there are more opportunities to make announcements (back in Urza's Saga, there were only four opportunities per year--we probably would've seen the announcements taken place over a shorter period of time if they had eight opportunities each year), but it's still striking that we're on about the level of the Urza's Saga block when it comes to frequency of bannings.
Has Wizards ever stated a policy of not considering a restriction in Standard, but just bans only?
Restrictions are limited to Vintage; cards haven't been restricted outside of that format since 1997.
Restrictions just aren't a good idea. It increases variance dramatically, giving strong advantage to the person who happens to draw their Restricted card. It only works in Vintage because there are so many broken Restricted cards that everyone is guaranteed to draw several of them.
