Took a look at the SCG Event schedule and the next 3 opens are non standard. The next standard open will be Nov 19th, almost 2 months after their last Standard Open to begin the season. This seams very weird considering they usually open a new set with 2 opens the 2 weeks before the pro tour. This year, they hosted a limited grand prix week 2.
Seams very odd especially given that it's a rotation new set, and a complete shake up of the meta game.
Any idea why they would do this?
Please note this is not a bash on modern or legacy. Modern and Standard are my two favorite formats but we largely know what modern will look like for the next 3 months, but the standard meta is totally up in the air. No CoCo deck to always be tier 1 anymore.
This is me probably taking a stab in the dark but I think alot of it was probably scheduling if anything. As far as I remember they do 1 modern 1 legacy a season right? I might have that wrong though.
I'm sure most of it is due to scheduling agreements they made with wizards.

More than 1 Modern, Modern gets almost as many events as Standard. It's usually scheduled though so that they play Standard around set release times.
Yeah, it just seams weird if they knew their week 2 open would be limited, that the week after the pT, they would want to capitalize and host a standard open. I love modern, but right now, there is 0 hype for modern. The dredge story was largely solved and didnt warp the meta game. We know exactly what decks will be there.
Standard on the other hand is like the wild west. Just about every archetype is viable, and it feels fresh in a way we haven't seen since Theros rotated.
Again, not complaining so much as long as there are broadcast, standard GPs in that time frame but it would be a huge shame to have to wait til Nov 19th before a broadcast major standard event. By then the meta game will become more solid and there will be less excitement around it.
More do with card prices. Modern has a stable market for the most part. You'll see some spikes and dips when the season comes and goes. Standard's spikes and dips are unpredictable and die off fast. One week you take in all these singles. Next week they are at 60% of their value. Even when they are buying at 40-50% value that is very risky.
After looking at this weekend's standard tournament, I can understand why. Standard is really poor right now. 27 of the top 32 decks were B/G or U/W Flash.

as much as I like playing standard, it is true the format isn't a fun to watch now as it has been in the past. the best thing about standard tournaments is when people show up with new sweet takes on archetypes or strong sideboard tech. this format is lacking innovation right now, at least at the higher level of competition.
