Excuse me while I jump off a bridge. Jace.format is not a world I would wish to continue living in.
It rotates with Dragons when the September block (fall set) comes out.
Thinking about it I'm guessing this is part of the reason we're seeing a truly bumper just short of 300 card SOI set. Gotta keep the size of the card pool up.
Lol. I agree that jace.format is a tough world to be in (if you aren't playing jace- and I do), but I do think it's slightly ironic that your avatar is an image of Metalworker, a card which is only slightly busted.
As for the 300 card set and the shrunken format, it's a way for them to sell more packs per set as people need to open more packs to get playsets of key rares and mythics that now have an even greater rarity. On one hand, I'm glad that I am finally transitioning into Modern so I can de-invest in Standard, but on the other hand, OTG proves that WOTC will figure out ways to make Modern players buy packs of the current set as well.
So then how long does each new set (from date of release) have until it rotates out? Assuming the second set of the block will have 6 months less than the first set before getting the axe. Is this correct?

A block will spend about 1.5 years in standard (only the first set of the block, but the block none the less)

It's definitely a catch-22 situation.
The joke is that I used to play Metalworker in my janky Bottle Gnomes deck way back in the day before it was ever a busted card.
We all had the chance to invest in Jace before the prices got too out of control. What I'm saying is that it's a bit too late now and I'd rather not play standard if Jace is going to dominate.
It is not a special set - it will rotate. We're moving to advanced sets only for standard, and we have 3 blocks of 6 sets in total for standard now. Origins and Dragons rotate when the next block comes around.
I'm hoping that Wizards still finds ways to make old cards return in standard. The Core Set each year usually had a bunch of cards that were also in older Core Sets. We could always count on some of the older dual lands making a return, and some older rares making a return in each Core Set. The other blocks/sets were always much more focused with respect to theme, and less thematically appropriate to have older cards make a reappearance in. With the idea of a yearly Core Set phasing out, I really hope that they find ways to incorporate older cards. I do like that I could occasionally still use some of my good, older rares in the standard environment.
I am worried that this new change will make Type 2 more expensive for multiple reasons.
If Origins rotates, will "standard" now only have 4 sets each time?
There will be 5-6 sets per standard.
Praise be to Jace, Standard's Prodigy.
