I was wondering if someone could recommend a deck style for me. I am told my meta is very competative
Thank you for your time
I think Mono Black Devotion would be good. Other decks that are competitive are Mono Blue Devotion, GR Monsters, and a few others. Check here in the competitive section at a few decks to see what you would like best. Good luck!

I just don't know what to play at the moment. I like red and blue but izzet is slow and clunky, and a mono red burn I've done too many times. Black is alright. I just need a fun 2 color deck to play thats cheap and kicks butt.
Hey guys. I want to have a deck ready for Game Day, but I have no idea what to do. I like spellslinging and I was a delver (I know) player back in the day. My favorite colour combination is Izzet but we don't have that many goodies. I'm kind of on a budget so I want to find something fun but isn't too crazy on the wallet.
I have 2 Jace's and a Ral Zarek and a Thassa. Kind of all the money cards I have for devotion. I was thinking of going u/w but Sphinx's Revelation is still quite expensive. I have everything else for u/w really. I also pulled a single Brimaz, King of Oreskos. I don't have multiples of much from Theros. Any suggestions, or am I in trouble?
My area seems to have a surprising lack of Mono Black Devotion. All the other major standard decks make an appearance, there's a good amount Mono Blue and Gr Devotion/Monsters. Some Red Aggro, Uw/Esper Control, B/W Midrange, and a few competitive brews, but no Mono Black, and very little White Weenies.
My question is, with that meta in mind, what deck would you recommend?
I had two thoughts.
First, Mono Black, it's the best deck for a reason, and if it's being underplayed locally there might be fewer sideboard slots dedicated to fighting it.
Second, assuming not Mono Black, then something that has a good matchup against the field, despite having an ok to not so good matchup against Mono Black, what would you recommend then?
I know Born of the Gods is coming this week and might shift the meta, but I'm not going to be able to play for at least a week or two and I'm looking for something to start building and tweaking before Game Day. Any thoughts on the subject would be appreciated, thanks!
Honestly, Mono Black would probably be the best choice for you. BW Midrange and UW Control would be tough and most of those other decks are not "free wins," but you have a good chance against all. Look at Owen Turtenwald on Channelfireball.com for inspiration.

Can someone point me to a post or a link that shows the various matchups between the top tier decks. What does Mono Blue devotion beat, what does it lose to? What does RG Monsters beat, what does it lose to? etc.
I would recommend R/W aggro/devotion
It blends the usually cheap design of RDW with RW devotion
And it runs a combo that includes a cheap mythic rare that is also a glorious anthem that works for red!
Mono Black got you down?
Chained to the Rocks those desecration demons, and skullcrack those garys!
Mono blue got you down?
Burn those cloudfin raptors to the ground, and bring Firedancer Satyr to the party!
U/W control sweeping your dudes?
Exile your whole board with Legion's Initiative!
(And have Boros Charm to back you up!)
Exile Elspeth and Detenion Sphere with Glare of Heresy~
Other decks?
Legion's Initiative in Mono red provides +1/+0 to:
Your two power one drops making them kill Sylvan Caryatids and Boros Reckoners
Your Chandra's Phoenixes to trade with Nightveil Specters, and do even more evasive damage
Your Boros Reckoners to laugh at Anger of the Gods, and just be even more terrifying
Your Ash Zealots with first strike to swing through even more dudes
Aaaaaaaaand what you can do, if your opponent is playing some kind of G/R monsters nonsense
Is play Fanatic of Mogis, and when he tries to attack, you block, exile your board, and then
return all of your creatures to the field with Fanatic(s) last, making for an explosive combo!
You can even evade the terrible Drown in Sorrow of Mono Black.
I suggest you all try it!
You can turn it into a semi Boros Burn deck if you choose with the sideboard as well
Just exchange the Firdrinkers with the Firedancers and put in Skullcrack/Boros Charm
Then you can burn all of the dudes out of the way while racing your opponent to Zero!
Be a Game Day Hero
Play R/W aggro/devotion

I have been working on building an expensive modern deck so I haven't had the time or money to work on standard. I would like to make a budget deck though. I don't have a lot of staples other than 3 thoughtseizes. I was thinking U/B mill or G/B something. What is your opinion?

I am currently preparing for playing in a PTQ in early March. I have very little experience with big events like this. I'm currently working on an Esper mill deck to be different, but unless it starts turning out some 4-0 wins at the local weekly Standard it's unlikely I will play this at PTQ. Otherwise, I have narrowed the options down to Azorius Control, Orzhov Control, and Gruul Midrange. My primary concern is beating Monoblack Devotion reliably, since that is the deck that represents the most of the metagame at this time. I don't want to actually play Monoblack Devotion because I think you only need a couple matches facing someone that has built specifically against it to be screwed. Of those three decks, any suggestions on which is best positioned against Monoblack Devotion?

Azorious Control absolutely owns mono-black devotion. Most of mono-black's removal are useless against it, and Supreme Verdict and Detention Sphere takes care of Pack Rat and Desecration Demon. It is one of the top tier decks currently in Standard. But the downside is that games can take really long to win, since Azorious Control is literally the most frustrating and annoying decks to play in the current Standard. And if you are facing me, RW aggro which actually has a pretty good matchup with Azorious control, I can win reliably quickly. But if I cannot, it would still take an extremely long time for me to lose. So this is something to take into consideration with only 50 minutes per match.
Orzhov control is basically Mono-black with a white splash. I have seen Obzedat and Blood Baron and various versions of this deck. It is all right.
Gruul midrange is also going to be one of the top tier decks in standard. The full suite of planeswalkers, along with mana ramp and big creatures make it very hard to deal with. However, if you are playing me, RW aggro, I got a ton of removal in the form of Chained to the Rocks, Mizzium Mortars, and if needed, Wear//Tear, and I also got 4 mainboard Boros Reckoners which will be a problem for big creatures, as I can just direct the damage right back to you. If you want to know the matchup between G/R midrange and mono-black, check out the thread I posted titled "What will be the top decks post BNG?" That thread literally turned into a discussion about mono-black vs G/R midrange lol. Honestly, I think this deck is really good and fun, and I would definitely be playing this deck if it weren't so expensive.
I'm looking to try out a couple top tier decks out with a friend, and I'm wondering if someone could recommend me some decks that have very even and interesting matchups against each other.
Would B Devotion vs U Devotion be decent? How would UW Control rate against either of those?
Hey there! I'm looking for a new deck to play, something along the lines of midrange or aggro. I love red, but am not a fan of the RDW decks. I've been looking at top tier decks but don't know which one would be best for me. I have a budget of about 100$ - 150$, if that helps.

Remember, this is just my opinion from a lot of play testing over a month ago. Mono Black vs. Mono Blue would be the closest and most fun matchup of them. Mono Black and UW Control is said to be pretty close by most people, but I feel it leans towards UW Control a bit more than is said. I personally feel like Mono Blue folds to UW Control. It was the deck that made me quit playing Mono Blue (along with Esper too).

I think I will just go back to G/W, but is it still viable in standard?
Depends on what you classify as viable.
It's playable but it's not Tier 1 or anything.
That is assuming you mean the aggro version. The midrange version is probably the worst deck you could be playing with Black and UW Control decks running around.
Ok, so I'm thinking about getting into standard. I've looked at deck after deck after deck, and I've found three that really appeal to me:
-GB Midrange/Scavenge
-BW Control
-GR Midrange/Beatdown
Which one is the most fun? Which one is strongest?
Looking to play a T1 deck online. One that won´t be too price sensitive too rotation and the release of JOU.
I think I will like Jund (or RUG) Monsters the most, but I am not sure how competitive it is. Esper seems nice too but it´s quite expensive and I wonder how stable it´s place in the meta is now that everyone will be gunning for it and with JOU coming up?
BW Mid-range is another option but it seems more T2..
Firstly all Bx decks are Tier 1 if they use the same shell as Mono-Black Devotion with Hero's Downfall, Desecration Demon etc. since those are just variants of Mono-Black and BW is definitely the most popular variant of it.
Jund Monster is a solid choice but the deck has its weaknesses like over the half of your deck being just mana because of the mana guys which is the reason you dont see that many copies at the top tables anymore.
To be honest if you can afford it UW/x Control is a really solid choice. The UW/x Control shell has the tools to adapt to everything. It's the reason the deck exists since Return to Ravnica was released.
I also talked about UW/x Control and not Esper. That is important because Esper is just variant of UW Control. If for example the meta gets faster because everybody plays aggressive decks then you can just adapt like runnig straight UW with stuff like Brimaz, King of Oreskos or Fiendslayer Paladin in the sideboard to beat those decks.
That being said its the most expensive deck in the format, you have to have a bit of experience with the deck and knowledge of the meta and about what the other big decks of the format could be doing since you are Control and therefore you are guy that has to answer every threat and not your opponent which is another point to consider since not everyone likes playing a reactive game and you have to know if that is something for you before putting a lot of cash into the deck.
If you look at the deck that will lose the least at the rotation in october than its GR Monsters although one the most important cards in the deck is among them which is Domri Rade.
All other decks will lose many cards especially UW/x Control although the core cards are also Modern playable.
To be honest if you are concerned about rotation I would invest into a black deck. Many of the Black cards especially Thoughtseize and Hero's Downfall will likely be played in top decks the entire time they are legal in Standard just like the Azorius cards Sphinx's Revelation, Supreme Verdict, Detention Sphere were so I would invest into those cards first since those cards will show up in Tier 1 decks guaranteed.
Great help. I think I will like control, but as you say it´s quite expensive and I am afraid Sphinx´ Revelation (as the only T1 deck that plays it in modern is UWR), Jace, Architect of Thought, Blood Baron and Archangel would all fall in price, and quite likely put the archetype out of T1 contention.
You are probably right that MBD decks will stay around after the rotation and the price is attractive, but I am hesitant to play it, for it seems kind of stale. Also MBD is 20% of the meta online whereas BW is 5%. Is this difference due to the different power-level and match-ups of the decks or just personal preference?
Beyond MBD and Esper the only viable choice seems GR-Monster shell and to a lesser extent Mono-U.
You mentioned, and I´ve just read it as well that GR-Monsters is quite inconsistent. I am looking if maybe RUG-Monsters is viable, but I find it hard to judge it´s competence as it hasn´t been showing up online yet and seems relatively new.
The biggest difference between BW and MBD is that BW doesnt care about devotion and uses the powerful Orzhov 5 drops like Obzedat, Ghost Council and Blood Baron of Vizkopa. That guy is hard to deal with in the mirror which is mostly the reason the BW version gets played. You also get access to a few new cards like Revoke Existence which lets you deal with stuff that Mono-Black is unable to.
Mono-Black on the other hand is just more consistent because of being mono-colored and Gray Merchant of Asphodel can be at times far more powerful then the other 5 drops even though he is objectively worse then them.
In regards to Monster being inconsistent. That is a fundamentally problem of how the deck is structured. If you put mana guys in your deck you have to live with the consequence that you sometimes draw those guys instead of actual threats and just die.
Also GR Monsters is the underdog against Mono-Blue, Mono-Black and Esper. The deck never really took off because of that reason. You saw a resurgence in the deck because it was able to take advantage of the removal that Mono-Black and the UW Control decks were running and the fact that Mono-Blue lost popularity. That is now no longer the case. You can imagine that a deck that has access to Ultimate Price, Doom Blade, Lifebane Zombie, Thoughtseize etc. will have an advantage over your deck playing with a bunch 4-5 cmc creatures.
I dont want to make the deck bad. I just find it important to say that since you really want to invest into something and a lot GR Monsters players seem to be deceiving themselves a bit in that regard. The results speak for themselves at this point.
RUG Monsters is definitely something new therefore its unproven and I cant really say something about that.
Hi currently I'm playing an Esper Control deck, It has all the staples but 2 sphinx's revalation, my question is what deck should I build in order that I can resist the rotation of RTR? I have 4 thoughtseizes, 3 hero's downfall, sets of BW, BU and UW scrylands, I thinking in something like BW midrange or Mono B devotion
I've been playing a Dega midrange deck since the inception of the Theros block this standard season and have become quite bored with it. I'm looking to play something fun and creative for FNM that can win at least 60% of the time. Anything with chromanticore sounds fun too.
I'm looking to get into Standard (after playing exclusively Modern and Legacy). One deck that particularly appeals to me is the Naya Planeswalker control deck that Brad Nelson posted in his last article on SCG (called "The Return of Tempo", I'd post the decklist but since it's a premium article I assume I'm not allowed to). I want to play something that has a lot of planeswalkers and I want to play something that isn't going to have half the deck rotate out in the fall. The Naya control deck seems to fit the bill since the only maindeck cards it'll lose are Mizzium Mortars and some of the land (and I'm sure the next new set will have something to replace shocklands that is good enough). Plus from winning packs of Theros over the past few months playing FNM I've managed to acquire a fair portion of the cards needed. The thing is, I'm not terribly familiar with all the standard decks so I have no idea whether this is a legitimately competitive deck or is just a fringy brew. I want to play something that I can win with after all!
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
