Monastery Swiftspear is still hovering over the two dollar mark at around $2.62. Any chance it goes down in the near future? When Fate Reforged comes in January, Khans won't be opened as much.
Its definitely going to go down. especially after MTGO set redemptions starts happening.
Hey, guys This is a newbie question, but I haven't really kept up with Magic regularly to know the answer: does the overall price of cards in a set drop when this set rotates out of Standard? I'm asking because while I've seen people here saying KTK cards will drop in price soon, I'm only now finishing my Zendikar collection and I've seen Iona's price increase in about 20 bucks since she was Standard legal. Is this an exception, or do cards get more expensive with time? Thanks a lot!

Deep in a murmuring bosk, where the trees' memories span centuries, the simple banner of green and copper signifies an elder whose rings number more than a faerie's days.
If a card becomes playable in a non-rotating format its price will generally drop after Standard rotates, then will begin to rise. For example, Elesh Norn's price dropped to about $10 after she rotated from Standard (where she was around $25). However, her price began to rise again and now sits back around $27-30.
Otherwise, they drop and tend to stay that way. Blood Baron of Vizkopa was around $20 for the last several months of his time in Standard. Once he rotated, he dropped to around $2 and hasn't really gone up.

Got it, thanks a lot! So I think my strategy for the block after KTK will be buy the sealed stuff I want, then wait till it rotates out so I can buy the singles and finish the collection Do the prices tend to drop immediately after the rotation, or does it take some time? Getting the timing right can save me lots of money it seems haha

I've started playing MTG again after ... well probably 10 years or so. Back then I only played casually with some friends but I'm interested in getting into a competetive format.
While I can't imagine that I'm the first one to ask, I couldn't find any answers via the Board search.
Can you tell me (very roughly) what playing Standard costs? I know about the rotations and the rough deck prices but since the cards do not loose all value when rotating I can't really grasp how much it costs to play/upgrade a deck through it's lifecycle (since I don't know how often you change/upgrade to keep up with the meta).
I'd appreciate it if anyone could give me a rough figure what it takes to maintain a good deck (let's say yearly).
That's kind of impossible to do. New set rotations (every 3 months or so) can seriously shake up the metagame, especially when its the first set in the block and the previous block is rotating out. So you have to upgrade with each set release, or even between sets if the meta shifts. For example, recently Abzan and Mardu were the two big decks, with Jeskai Aggro coming in third. Then Jeskai Tokens showed up and pushed both Jeskai Aggro and Mardu almost completely out of the metagame. This was between sets as well.
And the cost of keeping your deck current depends completely on what deck it is and the type of deck. My UW Heroic deck was only around $100 to build and is pretty competitive, but that's because its an aggro deck. The Abzan Midrange deck is also really good, but requires $400+ to buy it because of its card selection (as its more of a "good stuff" deck than a super focused strategy).
So, no, we can't really give you any ballpark numbers. If you decide on a deck, then we might be able to help you out more.
Thanks for the rundown. I still have some time since Fate Reforged is coming out soon, so there's no need to rush for me. I'll see how the meta looks once FR has been played for some weeks.
Also, Midrange decks tend to be a bit more stable between set releases, as they're mostly just "good stuff" decks. They play the best cards in their particular color combination that they can and hope to outvalue their opponent. This means that, unless there's some super powerful enabler for a different archetype (such as aggro) that they can't play, they can adapt to new releases fairly easily.
However, they pay for this stability, literally. They tend to be pretty expensive.
Just buying a deck and hoping it's good from one week to the next will have you having ups and downs.
Agreed, though you can make relatively safe bets. There have been very few tournaments that Abzan has not been doing well in, and Sultai has rarely had any major issues over the last couple months.
So do you guys think the KTK fetches will ever go up in value again? im hording them right now, trading all my extra stuff for them. I have like ten plus of each, and I know zen fetches didn't really start to go up until about a year after they rotated out of standard, but the zen fetches also weren't a reprint land either.....

They're going to go up but don't expect something like $40 like the Zen fetches. I'd personally estimate at about $25 for the most popular ones after about a year that Khans is out of print. Khans is going to be one of the most opened sets of all time thanks to these fetches, so there's going to be tons out there, plus all the ones that are gonna be in FRF packs. That being said, they're going to get play in eternal formats for sure. So, I'd estimate about half of what the Zen fetches were going for, back when they were the only fetches in the Modern format. These compete with the Zen fetches since, unlike before, decks like Mardu burn can now run they're choice of whatever Red fetch they want, as opposed to be limited to ONLY Arid Mesa and Scalding Tarn. That's why the Zen fetches are going down as well, since people are obviously going to go for the cheaper option (they're also going down because of fear of a reprint, but that's not for this discussion lol).
You're def making a good decision in investing on these tho; if you really want to go the extra step, try to pick up the original Onslaught versions as well.
I'm trying to make the jump from MTGO to paper and these land prices are killing me. The land bases on their own seem to make up almost half of the deck costs. I wanted to get all the lands, but now I see that it's really not feasible and I'm going to have to choose two decks for my SO and I and it's going to run me about $600 for U/W heroic and Sultai Whip.

Yup and that's pretty much the nature of the game. People need their lands so the demand is high.
Once you get them tho the price of a ton of decks lowers by alot so if you can on playing you might as well bite the bullet.
QQ over the fact that Elspeth is still $15++ despite her duel deck coming soon which will cost only slightly more and comes with Kiora + possible goodies.

I'm thinking about just buying playsets of all the fetches now, saving $300 and waiting for rotation to buy into standard post Magic Origins.

$200 for playsets of all the KTK fetches...
Yup. Magic is definetly not a poor man's game once you hit the higher levels lol.
I'm myself now a playset of Flooded Strand away from having all the Khans fetches. Planning on getting at least one more playset of all of them, if not 3-4 playsets. 2 for my collection and the other two to trade once they start climbing back up, but I'm going to see how the value moves with the Onslaught originals.

I need her to help send my rhino recruits
Don't worry she'll be a couple dollars once the duel deck hits shelves lol.
Don't know if you'd want her since she'll rotate soon tho lol.

She doesn't rotate til the fall so there is plenty of time to use her still.
Back when the Temur Ascendancy combo deck hit, I thought it was the next big thing. I bought out my store's supply of the namesake card, and build the deck for myself. Turns out that one, I can't play combo, and two, the deck isn't that good. I still have a supply of 5 or 6 extra Ascendancys. Should I sell?
Also, I have a copy of the new Elspeth. I know it's dropping like a rock, so I wanna unload it ASAP. My LGS is offering about 8 dollars for it in cash, and 10 in store credit. Should I go for that?

Jeskai tokens was unbeatable the first few weeks it was being played.
Of course when you have a large enough collection it is easy to chop and change.
