I think there's too much influence in too few hands and everyone over their head (Hasbro) knows nothing about the product or the community. They only want to see better numbers. Shocking really that they can't possibly be showing better numbers just based off participation for the last 3 years yet only the CEO was replaced and that was only to push Arena and cash from that direction. Just look at the predatory price practices they're going to employ there!
Not sure I can be optimistic since the only good decisions they seem to be making are the ones where they walk back stupid ones.
Arena is sorely needed for the company right now because mtgo has been out dated for ages. There are platforms on par with it that offer an unlimited free card pool that users can utilize for free.
The reason cards are expensive is the box openers trying to make their margins for providing the service of opening, sorting, storing, and distributing singles. However, the entire box opening industry is in just as much of a bind as the players are. The reason the prices are high is that card vendors know power sells and people are animals that deep down will claw at one another, scraping for whatever small competitive advantage they can get.
Also, an interesting note is that the less someone plays magic that has a vested interest in magic, the more they will spend per card.
The reason for this probably stems from an interesting fallacy that a pro sports player told me at university. People tend to think that the only reason they are not motivated to go out and play a game is that they lack the right gear. So, these people buy what they think is the right gear to put them on par with everyone else. If someone isn't motivated enough to go to the card store to play at the right time for modern or standard, having more competitive cards will not change that.
Also, wizards does try to print proper power level cards and doesn't go out of their way to sell power. What the secondary market does is try to find the outliers and then sell them as power.
1. (Ravnica Allegiance): You can't keep a good esper control deck down... Or Wilderness Reclamation... or Gates...
2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...
3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!
If they're trying to print the right power level... ugh. Kaladesh.
Arena is being set up to rob some people of money. Straight up, not much else to see there. Instead of fixing things that are broken, they break it more by manipulating matchmaking (which is a fantastic failure so far). The predatory gem system is a big red flag for skinnerware and they just ignore users trying to tell them... fix the game, make it the best, and the $$ and glory will come.
As far as the core design and brand strategy, they keep saying they've learned their lessons but evidence shows they don't like learning. Like in another thread about BaB one guy said 'Maro uses positive spin' and too many mistake that for 'he has so much more info than us'. Common sense defying stuff.

Yeah, if they break standard it's a nightmare for everyone. Modern players tend to play less frequently and generally have escape routes in case a situation happens by just tossing enough money at the best legal answer cards in the format. Standard doesn't have either luxury. I'd say next to draft, standard players play the most games of magic as a whole. This leads to deck fatigue if the format becomes too much of the same.

Arena isn't only being set up to rob people of money, it is being set up to fail. No digital producing WOTC puts out will be successful until they put a bullet into MTGO.

Killing off mtgo will drive off way more players than abandoning arena now. Players have built collections over years and all those cards have value. To just shut it off and rob people of thousands of dollars will kill WotC/Hasbro as a company. And on the topic of arena, the viewership is good now, but once they stop paying big name streamers to play it, it will fall off hard.
Well that is one of the problems. They can't get rid of MTGO because people are heavily invested in it so they can't make a new product actually better than MTGO...but MTGO is really old and terrible.
not impressed with the price tag on hydroid krasis right now. Pulled one in my prize wall box at GP Toronto and traded for another. Too bad it and carnage tyrant are super good right now, I probably don't see either dropping anytime soon
