Seems like the top tables are dominated by UB Control / Esper Dragons, just like at the Pro Tour. Maybe it really is by far the best deck in Standard!
Yeah Esper dragons is the real deal. I'm having trouble tweaking my Abzan deck to beat control match ups. Perhaps 4x Thoughtseize is correct but leaves you vulnerable to mono red which is very popular in my local metagame right now.
On one side, Esper able to include up to Scorn, Stroke and Dissolve; on the other, gruul with less than the playset of Rabblemasters because it is too slow,
Welp, it was fun to play midrange while it lasted. So long Abzan and GW devotion.
ITS ESPER ALL OVER AGAIN. Anyways, I think my aggro deck has been doing well against them. Foul tongue, Thoughtseize and Brimaz all put a lot of pressure on them. Hasty Surrak is also really difficult for them to deal with.
I'm surprised that even with 4 thoughtseize and 4 duress that the midrangey decks aren't doing more damage. Surely thought should be more than enough to trash the Esper deck, shouldn't it?
I'd say Esper dragons has about a 25% chance of winning GAME 1 if they lose the die roll, 45% chance if they win.
Mono Red is hugely favored against you game 1, but I'm of the opinion that that pendulum swings the other way for games 2 and 3 as most UBX players are really dedicated to shoring up that match. That said the bigger problem here is that you almost always start against Mono Red automatically a game down in a best out of 3, which is never going to where you want to be against any deck.

Brilliant ideas are stupid ideas that worked - Patrick Chapin
I played BR dragons (CVM did a VS video with it) for 2 game days and finished #2 and #1 (25-30 people events).
I love the control matchups with 4 thoughtseizes and 3 duress SB. My only 2 dead cards are 2 bile blights game #1. It has great matchups vs mono red and ub control, definitely check it out if you are searching for a good deck in todays meta.
It does look like a pretty sweet midrange control deck.. I miss running discard. They should bring back Hymn of Torach, Blightning and Megrim. Lol
I've swapped 1 stormbreath for a fate reforged kolaghan. after 2 gamedays im going to get the 4th stormbreath back in for 1 Dragonlord kolaghan.
First 3/4 turns is just removal and hand disruption. t4 thunderbreak, t5 stormbreath t6 dash kolaghan is nuts. But with thoughtseizes and kolaghans commands they either have no answers, or used their counters on your discard spells. It a very, very fun deck.
I was looking through the decks from this weekend and found this. Is that the deck you're talking about? If so, then yeah, that looks like a lot of fun. How do you handle quick aggro decks in game 1? Just stem the tide and rely on your bigger bodies to close it out? I mean, game 2 you can side in Anger of the Gods and the second Crux of Fate so I imagine it gets a bit easier after that.

3 UB/Esper Control
1 Abzan Control/Midrange
2 RDW/RgDW
2 Abzan Aggro
Rounding out the Top 16:
2 GR Dragons
2 Abzan Aggro
1 Abzan Control/Midrange
1 Jeskai Tokens w/ Narset
2 RDW/RgDW
I agree, the Bant deck destroys the control decks, and a Protector/Deathmist deck also outvalues control while still being good vs aggro.

Listening to the design team is pretty cool right now.
I'm excited to hear that UB and UBw is dominating.
People talking on the twitch link are saying all the top 8 decks are playing Ojutai? That's densely populated.
EDIT: Live just started again.

What a stale meta. I'm glad to see tokens in the list though.

We've had super boring and stale mid-range for the past 2 years dominate standard. Or is midrange always supposed to be unbeatable?
AAtleast we had diferent types of mirange and we still had UB control and mono red agro mixed in.I don't want it to be jsut esper control
I'm fairly certain an aggressive deck won the Pro Tour instead of a control deck.
That's only because all the decks that play it only use 3 copies.
I don't know how to beat this deck but I'm sure it is beatable.
