Coverage of the Invitational will begin on Friday, at 11:30am ET. The first 4 rounds will be Standard. The following 4 rounds will be Legacy.
Day two coverage of the Invitational will begin at 9:00am ET. The first 4 rounds will be Standard. The following 4 rounds will be Legacy.
Day three coverage of the Invitational will begin at 10:00am ET. This will be top 8. The format is Standard.
There will be sporadic coverage of the Standard Open.
You can discuss the Standard portion of the Invitational and the Standard Open below.
Please do not discuss:
-- Legacy
-- Cards and decks not pertaining to the tournament (i.e. why isn't Caustic Tar seeing play?)
-- Once again, please do not discuss Legacy, we have a cool forum for that
Shaheen Soorani has it in his Esper Control deck that went 3-1 or 4-0 in the Standard portion.
The card seems ok but not great in the build - he did get value of Ultimate Price and Dig Through Time, which is living the dream.
Dragonlord Ojutai is a breakout card for sure, although I don't think it's amazing. Has good synergy with Jeskai Ascendency, which seems like it's optimal place.
Soorani is 6-3 according to his twitter. I think he lost twice to Temur. In something like the Invitational does 3 losses mean you pack up your things?
It's a running joke on the SCG stream chat that Fabiano got sent to jail for something or other (which was started while he was playing in an event). Unfortunately, some people believed it.
Just tuned in hoping to see some DTK standard action and they are literally just starting Legacy. Meh. I guess I'll be able to see the matches in a week when they finally get put up on YouTube.

They will probably have Standard replays after the Legacy is over.

Narset looked stupid in his first game on camera! Pretty sure he rebounded an Utter End which dealt with two Outpost Sieges, an Ultimate Price which dealt with two creatures, and a Dig Through Time. It also drew him two or three cards with the +1. It was gross.
I'm really glad to see Thunderbreak Regent doing some work too. This guy is probably my favourite card in the set, and one of only two cards I preordered playsets of. Curving him into Stormbreath Dragon is going to be sweet!
Just to confirm, the Top 8 is going to be Standard, right?
Michael Braderman (Monored Aggro)
Jacob Wilson (Abzan Control)
Todd Anderson (Jeskai Tokens)
Reid Duke (Sidisi Whip)
Joe Bass (Abzan Control)
Jason Coleman (Abzan Aggro)
Ross Merriam (RG Aggro)
Chris Andersen (GW Deovtion)
In the end only one Thunderbreak Regent deck made it into the top 8 compared to 3 Siege Rhino decks. To me it looked like Ross Merriam did really well in the legacy rounds with his BUG Delver deck. Considering he was 8-3 after the first 3 rounds of standard on day 2 after going 8-0 on day one this is almost certainly the case.
Jeskai Ascendancy and Whip of Erebos still making a showing even with Dromoka's Command in the format is interesting. I think it's only a matter of time before Abzan decks adjust to what's going on. 4x Thoughtseize is probably the right call being able to take out Thunderbreak for 2 life as opposed to the 3 it will cost you with removal. I'd say Abzan Charm being able to exile Deathmist Raptor is also another thing Abzan has in their favor.
Disclaimer: Have recently started playing Abzan myself and after buying in of course I don't want the deck to fade away from the top tier any time soon.
The top 8 doesn't tell the whole story since legacy is 50% of the top 8 results.
Abzan is definitely still good but I don't know how much we can take away from this event since guys like Jacob Wilson and Ross Merriam rattled off spectacular legacy records securing their top 8s.

Starcitygames also posted the decks that were 7-1 or better in the Standard portion of the Invitational.
Abzan barely seen on camera. 3 copies in the top 8.
SCG really focused on their buddies playing Jeskai and RG aggro.
No one wants to watch a deck that has literately changed 0 cards with the new set.
It's not the fact that they didn't have Abzan on camera that made me comment about it. It's the fact that they talked it down like it wasn't even in contention. At least Cedric did anyway. "Siege Rhino not seen", "Abzan not doing well", "Thunderbreak Regent very impressive". Then 12 Rhinos to 4 Thunderbreaks show up in the top 8. Seems a little strange.
Thunderbreak Regent sold out on SCG. I like Cedric, he does a good job. Pat was more diplomatic about it though.
I think the tournament has sold me on silumgar's scorn... I'll have to do some tweaking of my deck to fit in dragons. I was worried about Silumgar's ability to close a game but perhaps anticipate will allow me to take less damage early.
I like how the commentators kept saying Abzan is bad, abzan isn't doing well, and then 3/8 are Abzan.
Push them new card sales!
Just because people play with Abzan and some manage to do well with it, it doesn't mean that Abzan is the best or even good choice for this tournament. It's just that the meta is so diverse it doesn't punish people for picking the "wrong" decks. I'm not saying Abzan is suddenly bad, but it might be worse than before. so get over your rhino-issues and stop ridiculing other people for making valid observations of the meta, that you don't seem to get..
This will be the 1st weekend that DTK will be legal, so expect to see some brews!

What kind of Abzan lists played Sidisi?

I thought I was going crazy! They really did talk down Abzan the whole time.
THUNDERB(r)EAK REGENT!!! DRAGONLORD OJUTAI!!!!!!!!

http://www.starcitygames.com/events/coverage/71_or_better_standard_decklist.html
Those decks were
3 Monored Aggro
2 Sidisi Whip
2 Abzan Midrange (not running Sylvan Caryatid, but only running Fleecemane Lion and not Rakshasa Deathdealer)
1 GW Devotion
1 Jeskai Tokens
1 Abzan Constellation
1 Abzan Control
1 Esper Control
1 UB Control
1 Jeskai Tempo
Abzan is still doing great. The deck that isn't doing great anymore seems to be RW Aggro.
Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.
