Anger of the Gods involves a heavy red commitment. As just blue/black you get a massive advantage in having good mana. Where that mana comes into play is that you're able to protect your life total far better than other decks.
When it comes to sweepers though they do have Drown in Sorrow and Aetherspouts. It makes you wonder on the reasoning why neither was included. I can sort of see why Drown isn't there because the deck is all draw go and you don't want to tap out but Perilous Vault has the same issue. The only advantage I see to Vault is that it answers planeswalkers but it's so clunky... there must be a better answer than that.
Ty for the thread OP. Been out of Magic since just after the spoiler for the 2nd set of Theros so coming into this fresh. Nice to see the immediate impact of Khans.
I don't get why the UB control deck isn't grixis. You have 8 fetchlands and 12 scrylands for it. Seems to lack some sweepers and such since perilous vault is kind of slow in comparison to anger of the gods. Good spot removal too with magma jet, magma spray, lightning strike, etc. etc.
It's more difficult to have UU or BB untapped on turn 3 if they're playing Grixis.
The Spencer Garnier/Lee Shi Tian game three was fantastic.
Gotta'feel bad for Garnier. The dude played around it as well as he could.
I could do without all of Tian's dramatics, the ridiculous slow card drawing for absolutely no reason, etc. You either have it or you don't. Need for the nonsense.
Can't wait for the price spike so I can dump my Ascendancies.

Coverage also loves it. It's good for the game. If you don't slowroll it it means you think the pro tour means nothing at all and that it isn't a big stage. I was thoroughly entertained by it as were a great many others I assume. If he just looks immediately there's nothing special about those topdecks and it could be an FNM for all I care.
Agreed with having difficult attaining UU on turn 3. I feel that dissolve is good in some matchups but poor in others/the only reason you really want UU. Bile blight is hard though in grixis you have 8 black fetchlands + urborg and still a bunch of duals that fix for it. Unsure.
Ascendancy has been going up pretty much the last week but yeah this should spike it more especially if it wins the whole thing.

Looking forward to seeing the decklists. So the question is, is Jeskai wins the real thing? or is it merely a case of being the easiest to crack first. And how different are the decks?
Anyone know how Tian's Combo works? I saw (and have) the Altar of the Brood version, but didn't see how his version worked. Also, is there a replay of that last round where he was down to 1? lol
At some point in the combo they can use retraction helix to bounce your board because they can go infinite in mana and dig deep enough to cast whatever they need to. I could be wrong on that though.
So essentially Jeskai Wins attacks early with threats mantis rider/rabblemaster then kills you with burn or just clears the way for mantis/rabble.
He casts retraction helix on a mana guy with an Ascendancy in play then infinitely bounces the 0 cost artifact and replays it to make his guys massive and attack for the win
what is different with this version is he really cuts out all the chaff, including the altar. that's why this version is more streamlined than most lists.
surely anyone who plays this deck knows that attacking with infinitely huge creatures is one of the possible ways to win. however, it can be tricky if the opponent has a lot of creatures to block with. that's why altar can be another way to win. however, this version omits the altar. so, after reading his list, i see he has two ways for his huge creatures to actual damage the opponent in case opponent has blockers. 1. he makes infinite mana and infinitely recasts briber's purse with a counter, which would make all your creatures unblockable, unless opponent has enough hexproof creatures (e.g. sylvan caryatid or fleecemane lion) that can't be bribed; or 2. Nissa makes a land that can trample through all blockers. although why she is better than 1cc altar. maybe pre-combo she can still turn lands into blockers until you find the combo? i guess she's a wincon by herself outside the combo, unlike the altar.
The game I watched on camera he used helix/mantle/2 mana dudes to go infinite draw/mana, drew to nissa, bounced and replayed her till all of his lands were creatures, made them huge too, swung with the huge trample lands.
I haven´t watched any standard so I am only formulating this opinion from looking at the top 8, but I have to say I am quite disappointed. Jeskai was already shown in the first new Standard tournament and everyone was expecting Abzan-midrange to be an established deck.. Sure we got a combo-deck as well but I don´t like combo.
Kinda sad we don´t have Mardu, Sultai and Temur in the top 8. Maybe though, they will still show up.
I agree. It seems like other than BU control, there wasn't much risk in the builds. Nothing terribly innovative that hasn't already been considered. Do note that a version of Green/x Devotion is NOT present in the top 8. Also note only 2 decks of the top 8 have a set of Courser Of Kruphix. I've been leaving Courser out of some of my builds, and people keep asking why. This meta game is about threats, not defense. And Courser is all about defensively building advantage. Jeskai is too threatening for Courser. Between the fliers and the burn, he's too slow and doesn't do enough.
I'm glad that UB Control is apparently a capable deck. No control in the format would make Ascendancy Combo too much of a thing.

There's no mono blue deck just ripping through opponents like they're not even playing magic.
I have found it very entertaining.
