Hi Guys,
I'd like to start playing standard again. I'm fine with building a deck with cards that will rotate, but I'd prefer to build something that can keep some of the staples valid post rotation.
Budget isn't a main concern, but I don't want to put in a bunch of $$$ that will become crap when RTR rotates. Bonus points to decks that use cards that will be good in Modern and/or Legacy as I have no issue at all spending money on cards like that. I am open to playing the most difficult decks, but need time to learn them so prefer decks that have a high skill cap.
My preferable play style is, in order:
Tempo
Combo/Control
Combo
Control
Aggro
Now, of course I know that the meta will change and not all decks that are recommended will remain competitive, but if I can have a good base going into the fall that'd be great.
So, my question is, can this wonderful community recommend any decks that would fit my criteria as a Standard n00b? My initial inclination is build something like BUG control, which would keep some elements of a tempo game, utilize powerful cards like thoughtseize and have access to what I think the most powerful color in std is (green), with blue as more of a splash for things like prophet/counters/bounce.
Because no one knows what is in Khans, it is almost impossible to say, but if I were you I would look at the Pro Tour Journey Into Nyx decks and build basically a Block constructed deck. Here is the link to the top 8 decklists: http://archive.wizards.com/Magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/eventcoverage/ptjou14/top8decks . The top decks seemed to be BUG control and Junk Midrange, I'd make one of those and you can supplement the deck with RTR block cards like Abrupt Decay if you so choose. Hope this helped.
I'd highly recommend either Jund Monsters or Junk Midrange. It jams threat after threat and could sometimes be up to 20% removal cards post-sideboard against other match ups. The large hitters are Stormbreath Dragon, and Polukranos. Other key cards are Sylvan Caryatid and Courser of Kruphix that will remain post rotation. The deck splashes black for removal in the form of Ultimate price/Doom Blade/Abrupt Decay sometimes, which won't be reprinted, by black removal is usually a reliable bet. If worst comes to worst, you can replace them with Hero's Downfall, although it would significantly slow down the deck.
The biggest loss to the deck will be Domri Rade which provides a lot of the virtual card advantage in the deck. The other big loss would be Elvish Mystic, but one drop green ramp is as common as they come in these sets so I wouldn't be too worried about that. Another annoying loss would be Stomping Ground, which hasn't seen a pain lands equivalent reprint in M15. Overgrown tomb could be replaced by Llanowar Wastes. The last significant loss would be Mizzium Mortars and Ghor-Clan Rampager, which have various utility depending on the match up and would be harder to replace until Khans comes out.
I just realized that some Junk configurations rely on Archangel of Thune and Bloodbaron as finishers, both of which will rotate out so might want to rely on possibly combining the two decks into a Naya Monsters build.
Thank you for all the help guys. Going to get some big Red/Green guys and start from there.
Start w/ Coursers, Polukranos, Stormbreaths, Sylvan Caryatid, and go from there. I have most of the black stuff & lands from JUND monsters already, so it shouldn't be hard to finish if I get the standard bodies.
Always plan for aggro at the start of rotation. Midrange and control are reactive strategies. They need a defined meta to thrive. Play aggro with mirror breakers in the side and you should be good. You'll already have a natural positive win % vs most control decks and out pace the midrange decks.

That is not always true though. At the beginning of Theros standard UW/x Control was the big dog right from the beginning since the power level was obvious because it was one of the top decks if not even the top deck from Block Constructed.

edit: I stand corrected, see below.
Start w/ Coursers, Polukranos, Stormbreaths, Sylvan Caryatid, and go from there. I have most of the black stuff & lands from JUND monsters already, so it shouldn't be hard to finish if I get the standard bodies.

Does anyone have a Jund monster list?
Was thinking that or junk maybe since some cards seem to be staples in it.
