I used to play alot of MTG awhile back--mostly type I and some type II about 5-10 years ago.
I'm thinking about picking it up again, but not sure what is the best place to start. I see that M2015 is coming out soon, and a google search shows me that the following is currently in standard:
Return to Ravnica
Gatecrash
Dragon's Maze
Magic 2014
Theros
Born of the Gods
Journey Into Nyx (effective May 2, 2014)
Magic 2015 Core Set (effective July 28, 2014)
When do the earlier sets cycle out of standard? If they are going out soon, is it even worth me buying any since they won't be legal long?
Should I just focus on the newest 3 sets and M2015?
You have three months until Return to Ravinca, Gatecrash, Dragon's Maze and M14 rotate out. Honestly, I wouldn't bother too much with Standard until then, perhaps just draft Theros block and M15 for a while if you're on a budget. Once Khans is released in October, if you want to buy your way into Standard, find a deck that looks fun/competitive and buy the singles.
All the current competitive standard decks draw heavily from the RTR block and M14. The game will change drastically in the next three months, so current staples, even in the Theros block, may be not as useful. If I were new right now, I'd just play "wait and see".
I acutally think Mono Green Devotion would be a really good deck to start investing in. The cards in it include some of what will probably be format staples for at least a few months after rotation in the form of Courser of Kruphix, Sylvan Caryatid, Elvish Mystic, Polukranos, World Eater, and Voyaging Satyr/Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx. The only real cards in that deck that are going to rotate is Garruk, Caller of Beasts, and you can probably get a few on the cheap and just run it with maybe more beaters like Arbor Colossus. You could also run the Eidolon of Blossoms package and maybe splash black for some gods or something, kind of like Gerry Thompsons list that he ran at the invitational.
Rotation happens in October when the next block set comes out. We will lose all of the RtR block and M14.
Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions.

I would love to play some old-school vintage mtg again, but it doesn't seem like anyone really plays it much anymore...
Thanks, was always my favorite card when I played back in the 90s (only took me about 12 years to pick the game up again). Vintage is hard to find interest in largely because of costs.

I will always firmly stand by the belief that Magic is a game first and a collectable second.

To make sure I understand it, when the 1st of the Khans of Tarkir sets is released in September, will the following all cycle out of standard?
Return to Ravnica
Gatecrash
Dragon's Maze
Magic 2014
Thanks!
Yes, your legal sets will be
Theros
Born of the Gods
Journey into Nyx
Magic 2015
Kahns of Tarkir
I would only really bother picking up singles from Theros rather than buying sealed product. Save the sealed product opening (if you are someone who likes to do this) for Kahns.

I agree with Kamahl, the Fallen buy Theros block singles and bust packs in Kahns. Look at the block decks from Theros that will help you figure out which cards you'll need.
