So I just recently began running in my LGS' summer league. We are about halfway through our 12 week run period and I myself haven't done terribly (I think 8 in the standings?). However, our top 10 is primarily Esper control and Mono Black. There is one guy in 2nd running Junk midrange and one other around 9th or 10th running burn. There are very few aggro decks running around and 0 Mono blue players. So 7 in the top ten are control or mono b. There are usually around 18-20 people there on a given week.
I started playing Naya hexproof with moderate results, then switched to a G/B constellation deck with a lot of rock elements in it for the last two weeks and my standings have slipped a bit. Any ideas on what kind of deck might do well in a control/mono black dominated meta might be? I am fairly new to competitive tournaments and I am absolutely new at trying to dissect meta games and how to properly build for them. Any advice would be appreciated.
I actually ended up converting my Naya hexproof list into Brave Naya and went 4-1. I lost round one game 1 to pack rat insanity with no MB answers for it. Boarded in my two mizzium mortars. Ended up taking him to 8 game 2 with two boros charms in hand and 3 lands untapped at the end of his turn. Sadly my one red source was a mana confluence and I couldn't close it out. I played against mono b once more in round 5 and dominated it quickly with brave the elements and boros charm just swinging for 7-12 a turn. Fleecemane Lion ate the control decks for breakfast. I had too many dudes for espers devour flesh's to matter so verdict was the only answer, I was just careful not to overextend and rode to victory both games on the back of a monstroused lion or two.
I run a black devotion variant that uses 4x Master of the Feast instead of Nightveil Specter, and Pharika's Chosen (1/1 with deathtouch[eat your heart out Sylvan Caryatid] for B) instead of Lifebane Zombie.
My curve is super sweet and my bad matchups are only the ones against U/W control and Boss Sligh, and even so, my sideboard has sweet answers to both. To be honest the best way to handle most MB devotion decks is probably R/W control. Chain to the rocks for larger threats, banishing light for underworld connections, red spells for pack rats. Supreme verdict exists too, but it's a little less potent with Whip of Erebos out.
