Hello everyone, I'm looking towards the future standard right now, and I'm wondering, which of these two is the better removal spell? I'd like opinions on this, as I'm not entirely certain myself. The way I see it is;
Gild
+Costs pseudo-3 mana
+Can help color fix, which might be an issue come rotation
-Sorcery Speed
Silence the Believers
+Can hit multiple targets
+Instant Speed
-Always at least 4 mana
-Heavy mana cost for more than 1 target
Thinking of Gild as a three-mana spell isn't really correct. You need to have four mana available for it. However, once you spend that four mana, you get a temporary ramp effect, giving you an extra mana source which might allow you to cast a big mana spell on your next turn. That's handy, but ramp tends to be more valuable when it's early (turn 1-2) and permanent rather than one-shot (consider Mana Bloom).
The short answer here is that Silence of the Believers is better most of the time. There might be a case where you want Gild -- for example, if you have few black sources, or if you're trying to play a big game-winning six-drop on the next turn. However, in the typical case -- a controllish deck with plenty of black mana available -- you'd rather have Silence because of the instant speed and the ability to sometimes get a 2-for-1 or better.
Gild ramps into an Elspeth, but Silence 2 for 1s in the late game. I would take Silence; I have actually been playing a one-of in my sideboard actually.

One of these day I have to get myself organizized.
Too situational to say one over the other. Comes down to splash vs solid black. If you're going heavy black, Silence every time. Splash, most likely Gild. Plus if you're playing heavy black, you can just place King Macar, the Gold-Cursed in place of the Gild in the first place.

MTG Junky... First packs being a starter of each 4th Edition and Ice Age. Good Grief, I've been playing since 1995? Where does the time go!

this is mtgs, where occam's razor is so blunt it can't cut jello any more.
Gild is just way worse. Silence the believers is instant, scales beyond one creature and removes relevant bestow threats in standard (there's a couple). If you're playing black (non-aggro) you should be safe before T6 to do whatever you want, and if you want consistent ramp you might as well add green.
.
I think Gild is one of those cards that will be good post rotation due to some unknown mechanic like hybrid mana was for devotion.
No reason why yet, it just looks like that kind of a card.

The red mage lives by the variance and dies by the variance. May the variance be with you, always.

Otherwise, Silence is just way more powerful.

Now I always want to run it as a 4-of and I can't stop losing.
