So, I thought I'd bring out my MBD since all the Hype surrounding the
God cards and new archetypes were too good to pass up. And with White,
green, red and blue getting buffed I figured they would roll those
colors or a variation of those. I was wrong. Turns out at least half
of the 30 people that showed up actually ran Mono Black. And I happen
to face 3 of them. My mirror matches always end up the same. I have to
side out Doomblades and a couple other Thoughtseize for some Devour
Flesh and some other Blood Baron removal spells. The second game after
I sideboard, I usually get mana ****ed. So tomorrow I'm switching up
decks. Can't rely on MB anymore.
What ended up going 5-0 was a Golgari Devotion. Didn't face it but I assume
that it was beast.
So this is the deck I decided to run for my first game day of the weekend. My final result was 4-0 and topped the event of course.
My first game was against RW burn( 2-1). I lost the first game as i was slow out of the gates and he had the right cards in hand. Second and third game went much the same way after i boarded in some more resilient creatures (brimaz and mistcutters) over some one drops. In the end I managed to present too many threats and got there both games by being hyper aggressive. 1-0-0
My second game was against Naya hexproof (2-1). The first game went as badly as i thought it would with him getting a perfect curve of turn 1 gladecover scout, then madcap skills, then unflinching courage. I didn't think i could make it back from that position but once again I kept cool and manage to get a decent trade using a selesnya charm knight and a one drop. This paved away for vastly superior board position and simple beat down got there. Game two was much in the same of starts for him but he managed to out-tempo me with sided removal such as mizzium mortars and banishing light and got there with another gladecover scout and madcap skills after my draws ended up being nothing but land. Game 3 was different, I hit my curve perfectly and he didn't hit much at all. 2-0-0
After facing two relatively hard match-ups for this deck I was feeling much more confident! and my 3rd game was against a Junk mid-range brew (2-0). It was a very odd mix of good BW stuff (obzy bobzy, blood barons etc) mixed with some of the scavenge golgari creatures (varolz? loleths...etc), with a lot of removal to boot. Both games I saw the hyper aggressive starts with one drops followed by fleecemanes and between that and some ghorclan top-decks, I took both games relatively quickly. 3-0-0
My last game was against my best friend who had entered the tournament last second, borrowing a deck from someone in order to play. He was doing pretty well but at this point I was the only person that was on 9 points.
My friend was running RG Monsters (2-0). At first I was worried about this match-up. Stormbreaths, stormbreaths, stormbreaths. However! What i then remembered was that RG monsters have next to no removal!- A rare commodity to in most of my matches lately. As a result I kept a hand that was super fast out of the gate leading with dryads and soldiers followed by skyjeks. There was little he could do. Sylvans couldn't slow me down as i giant growthed my way through them first game to wipe him out before he could develop any sort of board position. Second game Fabled hero got in for 12 prior to another moderately aggressive start. I showed him a brave the elements in hand my next turn and he scooped. 4-0-0
All in all I am very happy with this build. The daring skyjeks are definitely acceptable replacements for voice, NOT JUST for those unable to acquire them but because they are just so awesomely aggressive! having 8 two-drops with 3 power is definitively a thing and the battalion trigger giving it evasion is so crucial for boros charm+ghorclan combos. I have a second local Game Day tomorrow (Sunday) and I will enter the same deck again to see how I do. Everyone was thoroughly impressed by the raw power in Brave Naya and I tend to agree that its a deck that definitely demands some respect. I got me my first substantial 1st place at a tournament and my first special playmat.
Shall report my matches tomorrow as well but for now I hope you are all getting the same results as me with this deck!
This was my vague report of the first of two local Game Days I had planned entering. Needless to say it went well :). I like my new playmat!
I was just reading up on Nyan Control. Seems like a pretty strong deck.
I saw that it won the SCG open. It has really strong support and it
looks to be that way until rotation.
Yeah burn is the deck to go with if all your doing is looking to destroy mono black. I don't find the deck appealing myself. It feels like the deck just plays Go Fish for that next burn spell. To each his own.
I don't want to get on here and brag when you had such a bad Game day experience. I did win my Game Day yesterday after so long of always coming up short in the finals. I seem to make it to the top 8 always and get to the top 4 or even finals and then my deck tanks on me. Not this time! Jund Monsters is ridiculous once you learn all of it's intricacies
