My younger brother expressed interest in trying out MtG, but doesn't really have the resources to buy into a format. I'd like to introduce him to the game, but I too don't want to drop a bunch of money on a hobby that he might not end up being interested in. I'm a casual player who plays exclusively Commander/French and limited, and I think that these formats would be too complex to be interesting for an absolute beginner. I considered getting duel decks, but to be honest I find them quite boring and not really worth the investment - hence my interest in pauper/peasant.
Can you recommend two pauper decks for us to try out and battle against one another? My specific criteria are:
- both are interactive (that means no Bogles, Reanimator, etc.)
- both are beginner-friendly (no storm or other combo)
- they utilize distinctly different playstyles (if possible)
- each deck features at least one color that the other does not)
- they are evenly matched (50/50 is preferable, but I am not familiar enough with the format to know whether or not that's even possible given the other criteria)
Any help here would be greatly appreciated
Thanks!
edit: I can't change the title, unfortunately, but to make it clear: I'm interested in Pauper and Peasant.

Playing with proxied cards at sanctioned events is good, actually.
I think starting in Pauper is a pretty good idea. A lot of decks seem simple and easy to learn on the surface, but as he gets more use to rules and strategy then he can find more in depth levels of play in the decks.
I would suggest going with a traditional Mono Green stomp list and a classic Mono Black Control (probably look at pre-Gray Merchant of Asphodel lists for a more balanced match up).
Mono Green is always fun because new players tend to like casting creatures and attacking. It also has a lot of ways to interact with your opponent and the stack, so once he gets some experience then he can start learning deeper aspects of the game.
The mono Black deck also contains a lot of creatures to help him learn the combat phases and blocking. It also provides a good amount of fairly easy to learn control with spot removal, hand disruption, and card advantage.
My friend runs Mono Green and I run Mono Black so we usually have pretty even match ups. A lot of it comes down to who goes first and how our opening hands look.
I can post some lists a bit later if you want along with alternate/cheaper options for some of the harder to find/pricier cards.
For a "level 2" idea, I'd suggest Delver. It can be pretty complex with all its interactions both internal and with the opponent. As a tempo deck it can play both aggro and control roles, so it teaches you to answer Who's the Beatdown. Lastly, it's also quite competitive in "serious" Pauper if he ends up liking the format and going in that direction.

Blue lives don't matter in the slightest.

2) Use the right number of each card.
3) Know your probabilities.
4) Print your deck lists; make yourself and your judges happier.
