I have now caught up on my reading. Interesting discussions you guys had. Wow, the hate for Dig Through Time was real! I will stand up and defend the honor of Dig Through Time during the next formal vote.
This was my favourite quote from the discussions (@ML_Berlin):
"Players say: It's hard to find players for casual games, especially for the not so popular formats! ` WoTC say: We eliminate all those formats on Mtgo, problem solved.
WOTC say: We already tried to remove the Tribal format from Mtgo 18 month ago.
After the storm of protest, WoTC said: 'We promise, there will always be a Tribal format on Mtgo'!
WoTC say: And we learned, we first closed all our official forums to remove the common platforms for the protesters, then afterwards, 14 months after our promise, we removed all those formats, including Tribal, of course."
Hi everyone, Deutchland dominated Slovakia and made Top 8 of the UEFA Euro. As an American, I don't really know fútbol but the Germany vs Italia/España match overlaps with S100 so it's a real possibility there will be a substitute host Saturday.
See you all Saturday! Maybe ML will join the chat after a (favored) German victory if he's not too tired from cheering.
I know the Sensei's opinion about the card "Coercive Portal", and I smiled when I saw the Sensei collect his 2-for-1 against the card.
Yokai, I am very happy you are joining us now, because you will punish people for playing slow, ponderous decks. Hopefully you will scare away the blue control players!
How active is the highlander community? Im thinking of getting a deck (Im tired of the commander banlist with necro mana crypt legal and bunch of other cards that are too fast for my taste).
We are an active community. A small one, but a consistently active one, as proven by this weekly tournament.
A number of us play casual s100 games during the week (usually by chatting to each other using the Buddy system, and then manually challenging). Feel free to add me if you like (Michelle_Wong on Magic online).
In summary, our matches fire much less frequently than Commander, but this means that the games tend to be more social. And as you say, we don't use the broken ban list from Commander, so the games are much more enjoyable in my opinion.
We are active, radio-active, once contaminated with S100, you won't be able to play commander again:-)
Since 2 years we have our tournament every week. I'm not sure what you mean, casual play inbetween?
I played daily S100 when the filter was stil implemented. Nowerdays, I usally play with players I know they have S100-decks. I'm too inpatient to wait. So best thing is to drop by on Saturday and add some players names as buddies, so you can see if they are online and may ask for matches. Most people here in forum used the same nicks as in MTGO.
If you click on METAGAME in gatherling, you see all events played, click on a Chainsaw Massacre event and then you can click on any deck played and see the list. Be aware that 20 life instead of 40 is maybe not the most important change!
Commander is ALWAYS the 1 card +99 others. S100 is random 7 cards out of 100. So the match and his outcome is definitely less predictable at start. Sideboard is important, too. If you want to basically use a commander deck you should make a new copy and modify it. Check each card again, if it's not only great with the commander present. Or you must add cards to raise probability that you will get the 'commander',
card searcher or drawer, tutor etc. Later with some experience, I think, you will rather create a new one from scrap, but for a start that's ok.
Cards with double effects are good, a Reclamation Sage is usually better than a Naturalize.
And I just remembered, that we had that topic before! Read post #40-44
Hello guys, some player on Magic Online added me because he found me on these forums so I went to check what is going on these forums. I'm a highlander player and I was very sad when the Singleton format just disappeared putting all my decks in Legacy (not being legal obviously^_^). EDH is not good enough for me since it is totally different format and does not feel like a game of Magic to me. But now (unfortunately not earlier-_-) I noticed that there is still community of Highlander players and I'd like to join and maybe write an article about the format on pureMTGO. I noticed that there are players in the Vintage community that would like to play competitive Highlander but none of us knew about you guys. So I will try to bring some players to your community.
Keep it up!
Welcome!
I did what ML referenced and posted links to the decklists of the last ten winners. seaandrhythm won four events and RobertZDar won twice. One day I hope to ascend to the Hall of Chammpions!
I spent several hours as sparring partner for STsung, yesterday. He recorded those matches, so enough footage should be no problem.
For the banlist: I counted only clear no or yes votes, many players in forum said they abstain or could live with any result for all or some cards, we voted for. About 50% did not raise their voice at all, I guess, they were unsure about the long term effects of the bannings, or had the same reasons as the ones who posted their abstains and saw no reason in repeating those.
If we want to establish a regular half year basis for voting, I would suggest 1st of October and 28th of February.
Yes, I know that's actually 5+7 months, but between October and March is traditionally the high season for MTGO. I would like to have both votings in non-summer months with a higher possible participation.
Since the last voting was in January, it would be ok for me to vote this time in September already, but I don't mind waiting another month, either.
However, S100 is much less effected from newly introduced cards than any other format. Most new cards are just not worth to ban in a '1 out of 100 cards- context', while they are critical in 4 out of 60 cards. So I see also reasons for regular votings just once a year, which should be then every November or January.
What do you think?

Are you sure STsung is a man? I would ask STsung to confirm.
I think rotating 100CS should rotate at the same time Standard rotates just so it's easy to remember. So when DTK/ORI rotates out and KLD rotates in then we can rotate 100CS. The next rotation would be when BFZ/OGW rotate out in Spring 2018.
I actually think now is a good time to discuss and implement unbannings before Kaladesh is released in October.
Crucible of Worlds- I think this card is fine to unban but I also own all 10 fetches and Wasteland. I've heard grumbles when I play Wasteland so Waste + CoW would probably be louder.
Demonic Tutor- In no world in no universe should this be unbanned.
Dig Through Time- This was banned in the most recent round of bannings. I think blue has done just fine without it.
Mana Drain- See Page 3 for why I think this was justly banned.
Intuition- I'm sure there's some sick combo with Unburial Rites, Dread Return, and Elesh Norn or something...but I'd be interested to see what players come up with.
Life from the Loam- Was this up for unbanning last time? This card should be fine
Merchant Scroll- I almost suggested this last time but I didn't want to be seen as favoring blue because I proposed Ponder/Brainstorm/Thirst for Knowledge getting unbanned. This card should be fine
Mystical Tutor- This contradicts what I just said about Scroll tutors are especially powerful in this format by the double whammy of being Singleton AND decks being 67% bigger than other formats. Also being an instant and half the cost of Scroll pushes Mystical into the ban threshold.
Oath of Druids- Did this get banned in the last round? If so, I think I voted no but enough other players voted yes
Sensei's Divining Top- This can totally get unbanned if and only if clocks are 25 or 30 minutes. We don't need Top & 1h20m matches.
Treasure Cruise- This was banned in the second-to-most recent round of bannings. I think blue has done just fine without it.
Trinisphere- I see no argument against legalizing this.
Yawgmoth's Will- I think this can be legalized as long was Mystical and Vampiric Tutor stay banned. I think this should stay banned if either Mirage instant is unbanned.
Coercive Portal- Just kidding
I want to apologize! I'm using a non hi-res screen and I wouldn't be able to make an indentikit picture at a police station from that photo:-). The fact that the vast majority of MTGO_players are male mislead me to a wrong assumption.
Always the gender trap, I thought LeilaPari was a woman for a long time, too
The main reason for not voting and discussing things in summer is, the fact that too many players are in holidays or just absent. My idea was a broader discussion with a bigger player base. I don't feel like S100 ban list is completely broken or need some immediate action- Although I would like to see some changes, too, I would rather wait and discuss with 25 players, than with 15. In some areas it's already too hot for sitting in front of a screen for considering bannings or unbanning of dozens of cards
and then writing about it, too
If the djinn is out of the bottle, I may later comment about bannings in general and your proposals, Sensei. Too busy the next days.
But one thing is clear: Coercive Portal will be on the list
Personally I dislike the idea of oath and yawg will being unbanned. Those are the two archetypes I hate in magic fast storm and oath but maybe oath wont be as op idk.
Cards I especially wouldn't mind coming off are
entomb (I love the idea of reanimator being viable plus we are playing with a sideboard so I dont think itd be super dominant)
stoneforge mystic and life from the loam seems like the most fair cards on the list.
The three cards that aren't on the banned list that probably should be: pod, bazaar, and mishra's workshop. People that abuse baazaar and workshop arent looking for an interactive game from my experience which makes it more vintage style. A lot of what should and shouldnt be on the ban list has to do with kind of format people want to play. It doesn't make sense to ban something like stoneforge mystic and keep pod unbanned Imo.
Also if anyone wants to play some matches feel free to message me, My username is Dawts I'm on very often (usually playing some LoL but ill get the message). I only have one deck atm but working on second one.
I will look at each of the cards you mentioned in turn. I think you underestimate how good tutors are in a singleton format even in non-combo decks they allow you to effectually play 2 copies of all of your best cards. also they allow combo to be an actual force in the tournament, which I'm fine wtih but some people may not like. also many of the cards you mentioned were in the wizards 100 card singleton banned list. while we went through and unbanned a very small number of things from the list (and banned a few of our own), we didn't discuss most of the preexisting bans at length.
crucible of worlds is banned only because it was on the original 100 card singleton banned list back when it was a supported mtgo format. I think it is safe to unban.
demonic tutor-- I don't think unbanning one of the best tutors in a singleton 100 card format is a good idea. this card is 4 points in canadian highlander being able to get any card in a singleton format is very powerful.
dig through time--i think should be banned. this format plays a lot like legacy, and it is basically a 2 mana fact or fiction much of the time. it was card that was basically in 100% of blue decks, and I think blue is easily the strongest color in this format, no reason to unban it.
entomb-- banned in the last round of bannings. i think the card is strong, probably 1 of the safer cards on the list to unban, however if you unban other tutors on this list it could easily be broken. with this unbanned i think reanimator becomes tier 1.
flash-- without tutors flash hulk isn't exactly easy to pull off. this would be risk to unban, but there are similar combos in the format now like, grindstone/painter's servant, rest in peace/helm of obedience. the difference this only costs 2 mana if you have it... idk. I would err on the side of leaving it banned.
gifts ungiven--i think this card is far to strong to be unbanned, certainly there are unburial rights shenanigans and some other cards like recoup that can make for some very degenrate combos. I think this will often win the game if it resolves... I don't think that is what this format needs. if yawg will and life from the loam are unbanned this problem gets even worse.
Intuition--this is a powerful tutor, I think it is strong in reanimator and a few other comboish decks, it is probably onr of the safer tutors that is currently banned to unban. if life from the loam becomes unbanned this needs to stay banned.
life from the loam-- I would be fine with this being unbanned assuming entomb, intuition, gifts ungiven remain banned.
mana drain--this was banned recently because people dislike how swingy it is. I think it is one of the less powerful cards on the list and have no real opinion either way.
mystical tutor--I think this card is very good it is card disadvantage, however tutor is very powerful in this format a tutor at instant speed that costs 1 even more so. I would keep this banned.
oath of druids--this was banned in the most recent series of bannings. I think i was one of the biggest proponents of banning it. I had gone 6-0 with an oath deck the week before. I think the card is extremely strong in a combo deck or in a control deck. an oath on turn 2 or 3 almost always wins the game.
sensei's divining top--I think people overestimate this card. it is really only good with shuffle effects. most decks can't even play all 10 fetch lands. it is searchable with tinket mage and it does combo with counterbalance but i still think the card is fine. there are lots of time outs in 100 card already as long as we keep the low time limit i think unbanning this is fine.
stoneforge mystic--great card, which tutors, and puts whatever equipment you need most into play avoiding counters. it is also easily splashable. no way should it be unbanned.
treasure cruise--i think this should stay banned. three cards is a lot. it isn't as good as dig through time in my opinion, but it does often get cast for 1 or 2 mana in this format. it isn't vintage where you can do that on turn 2 but it is still too powerful. also blue is the best color without this no reason to give them more tools
trinisphere-- this was also on the original wizards 100 card banned list. I also see no reason for it to be banned. it is the safest card on this whole list imo
yawg will-- this was banned on the original wizards list. I fine with this being unbanned if entomb, intuition and gifts ungiven stay banned.
birthing pod--I voted for this to be banned last time. it is a very powerful card in grindy matchups, wins the game if it is draw, imo it should be banned.
bazaar--this isn't banned don't think it should be. not actually sure why it was mentioned. I don't think dredge has the tools to win consistently in this format. I'm not sure why it matters if people want to play an interactive match. mono-red isn't particularly interactive doesn't mean it isn't a legitimate strategy.
bribery-- this card is fine. there are decks like mono-red where it is laughable bad. sometimes this is a great creature like primetime, sometimes it wins the game immediately with something like emrakul, sometimes it is terrible and gets a painter's servant or hellrider. it also verifies that your opponents deck is legal which is a nice bonus. my standards for banning a card that is sorcery speed and costs 5 mana are quite high this doesn't get there.
natural order--probably should be banned. I've not really seen people play progenitus, but this card can just win the game if they do.
--cards I've not seen mentioned---
there are a lot of dedicated combo cards like wheel of fortune, windfall, Memory Jar, Mind's Desire. many of these in isolation are probably fine but together would be very powerful.
Of all the cards mentioned i would unban:
life from the loam,
crucible of worlds
trinisphere
mind's desire
memory jar
sensei's divining top
merchant scroll
Entomb - This just got banned in the most recent round and I believe I voted against the ban. RobertZD has legit played this in multiple events without having a deck that uses this take it down.
Flash - I agree with STsung and sea.
Imperial Seal - Tutor that can fetch anything...hm how about Personal Tutor?
I'm not sure what this means...because Personal Tutor is legal then Imperial Seal should be? Trading two life to get ANY card justifies its ban.
Stoneforge Mystic - Needs to stay banned with or without Pod. To be honest, I think it could be unbanned if Batterskull were never printed. However if we are going to ban one, it should definitely be the 2 CMC tutor on a stick.
Birthing Pod - I voted against this being banned but I wasn't mad when it was. I played a lot of green decks and rarely played this. The Phyrexian/2 life was very significant versus RDW. There's only a handful of targets for every activation. If your deck isn't filled with ETB guys, you're not gaining that much value.
I agree with sea about Bazaar and Workshop- they would probably be fine as 4/100. I definitely think it's fine as 1/100.
Natural Order- I think it's fine. You're just as likely to draw your monster/target than you are to draw the Order.
* Birthing Pod: This should stay legal. It is powerful, but it must be used with supporting cards, and can be easily removed.
* Natural Order: This should stay legal, if Bribery stays legal (and Bribery will stay legal if the many previous comments in this thread prevail). It is not appropriate to say to the Green players: "Sorry, no more Natural Order for you, but we Blue players get to keep our Bribery!". Bribery is only 1 mana more expensive than Natural Order, and Bribery does not require the blue player to sacrifice a creature, and Bribery does not require the blue player to add to his deck mana-expensive bombs like Progenitus or Primeval Titan, and Bribery can search for any creature, not only green creatures. In addition, if we ban Natural Order, the blue players will be able to say: "I am happy because I can counter your Natural Order very easily because it's a 4 mana sorcery, but you non-blue players will not be able to easily counter my Bribery or bounce the creature, so thanks for allowing me to steal your Primeval Titan!".

See you all on Saturday. I am plotting with a new deck...
Regarding today's Chainsaw Massacre, the best moment of the tournament in my opinion was as follows:
Yokai casts Coercive Portal
The_Sensei casts Reclamation Sage, targeting the Coercive Portal.
I know the Sensei's opinion about the card "Coercive Portal", and I smiled when I saw the Sensei collect his 2-for-1 against the card.

crucible of worlds is banned only because it was on the original 100 card singleton banned list back when it was a supported mtgo format.
I would ban:
natural order
birthing pod
Flash - I agree with STsung and sea.

I also want to play with Memory Jar, Mind Twist and Jitte.
