So I've dabbled in Modern for a while now (RDW, Blistermantle, and now Infect), but I've never really gotten into it in paper because my LGS only plays one modern tourney a month - and I've never really gotten into constructed MTGO because I felt cheated buying two copies of the same deck (played the hell out of MTGO drafts, though).
But now I figured that if I want to play modern, I should ditch paper and play it on MTGO since there's always going to be someone - and since it's eternal, I definitely don't feel bad about investing in some fun decks.
That said, I've barely done anything on MTGO besides draft queues and casual play. Which Modern tournaments would be best for me - the scheduled events or the queues? I want to try and be competitive, but I'm not quite at the point where I'm ready to drop hundreds on a deck (which is why I'm running Infect right now, but it could still be better if I got things like Thoughtseize or Liliana).
I'm looking into getting a modern deck together myself (making a merfolk deck) as it becomes way too much trying to keep up with standard.
From what I can tell, your best option is to play in daily events, you basically need to go at least 3-1 in about a third of your events to come out ahead. Once you get a decent deck together and are comfortable playing it, you should be able to manage that.
Also, if you are looking to get into modern, make sure you try to pick up cards that you think will be useful in modern when they are at their cheapest in standard. Shocklands are a good example, pick them up now before they rise in price too much more.
