Not sure if this is the right spot so please feel free to move it if need be.
Hey Guys after the Fall out of the Modern Banning I decided to make a detailed post about a new format I am calling Traditional. The name is not as catchy as I would like, but I think the format would open up a great opportunity for people to play the cards they love in a competitive environment.
Welcome to the newest MTG format called Traditional. There is no ban list, just a restricted list. So far I have not done any testing of the format to determine what cards need to be restricted, however I will be making a restricted list based on that of the Modern banned list. It will be modified as time goes on around the time of a new set release to coincide with Wizards own Banned and Restricted updates.
This is not a sanctioned format but hopefully one day it will be.
The reason I present this format is because like vintage there needs to be a format where you have a smaller restriction on your cards that you can play and you can still use powerful cards and have powerful interactions without fear that the cards will be banned.
A little bit more detail about the format.
All sets that are Modern Legal are Traditional Legal.

I hope you get a chance to try the format and I hope that this takes off. Let me know if you have tried the format and lets see if we can spread the word.
It would even allow you to play cards that never saw the light of Modern day.
Tell me what you think and share if you like it.
And please if your here to tell me this format will fail, don't bother. Keep moving.
So... Affinity gets back its blazing fast kills. Fish became even worse... And I like Fish. There would not be a reason to not scoop immediately once you see they're on affinity with this change.

strange, first thing I got from other people was "so everyone just plays caw blade?" with openings for restrictions rather than straight up banning cards you can craft the format to be healthy without ruining entire decks the same way. obviously a deck like affinity would be quick. but so would storm.
Edit: The format will need testing and another update to the restricted list would likely need to be put in place around the release of Dragons of Tarkir. I see this as an opportunity to make a better format in the long run. I will keep note of peoples opinions and watch what decks become oppressive and we can all move on from there
Sounds like it might be even more poorly designed than Modern... which would be quite an accomplishment.
One of the biggest issues with Modern in general that leads to bannings is that its arbitrary choice of starting set excludes many of the cards that allow eternal formats to be self-correcting. Starting another format at the same point is just going to create another unbalanceable mess.
Cards like Force of Will and other disruptive hate elements are what allow you to make a non-rotating format without breaking your toys every year.
I'm not a fan of the format, but I am a fan of a restricted list along side a banned list for Modern. I'm in the minority, but a restricted list allows people to play cards that are safe as a 1-of, but not as a 4-of. Case in point, Birthing Pod.
So, basically, I like your idea, but I can't support yet another format.
i could see myself playing some kind of format like Ice Age+ (you know, like old extended+new cards), Exodus+ (for the card frame with rarities" or Mercadian Masques + (you know when they kill the reserve list so they could print whatever they want).
but honestly, this is just a copy of modern with minor twist, why would anyone bother try this format when modern is around and is a thing?
i really think that MM+ would be a great format, its something DIFFERENT than we already have.

So in that sense why would people play vintage when legacy is a thing. Not every format is for everyone. I just want to up the power level and give people a format where they don't have to "ask for cards to be banned or unbanned"
This format existed. It was called Overextended and the guy who made it now works at WOTC.
Nothing is going to come out of it unless you get someone to sponsor prizes and run events on MTGO. And even then you'll be facing competition from WOTC themselves, because they run Modern events.
I agree with the person earlier who called it "Whiner's Modern". People would still complain when they spend $400 on a playset and $300 of it gets removed due to restrictions. Maybe you have SLIGHTLY happier people who play those decks.
Also tutors sort of turn "Restricted" cards into 4 of's, atleast for cards that completely take over the game in copies of 1 anyway.
Basically:
- whomever has the better opening hand wins (my 5 cards vs your 5 cards)
- winner decided by coin flip
- t2 kills will be common
- combo not left in check due to lack of counterspells (force of will)
- no interactive games at all. ever. period.
It would be better if Wizards just stopped trying to cheat on mana costs, because it has a ridiculously low success rate, and a pretty high broken rate. Its either broken, or worthless, with very little middle ground of fun, interactive spells.
Suspend is about the only one that turned out pretty well.
There are 32 cards on the banned list in modern:
of those 32, only Dark Depths, Deathrite Shaman, Glimpse of Nature, Green Sun's Zenith, Jace, Preordain, ponder, Sword of the Meek, and Jitte aren't cheating on mana costs and/or provide fast mana.
So, 23-32 banned cards cheat on mana and/or provide fast mana.
Don't talk about the Modern Ban List here. That belongs in the dedicated thread in the Modern subforum. Keep this thread about this user-designed format. Additional posts geared towards bringing discussion around to the Modern Ban List will be moderated accordingly.
This format doesn't ban Jace, stoneforge, or jitte so It's going to be completely dominated by stoneblade
It also doesn't ban deathrite or BBE, so It will be completely dominated by jund
It also doesn't ban glimpse of nature, or GSZ so it will be completely dominated by elves
It also doesn't ban GSZ or birthing pod, so it will be completely dominated by pod.
It also doesn't ban top, so It will be completely dominated by countertop
It also only restricts dread return, so it will be completely dominated by dredge.
It also only restricts Dark Depths, so it will be completely dominated by dark depths.
It also only restricts blazing shoal, so it will be completely dominated by infect.
It also doesn't ban cloudpost, so it will be completely dominated by 12 post.
It also doesn't ban artifact lands, so it will be completely dominated by affinity
It also doesn't ban ponder or preordain, so it will be completely dominated by delver and storm
Affinity and combo. That's it. Fact is these sort of decks CANT EXIST without the tools to fight them, which aren't legal in modern.
This format is for idiots who want those broken interactions without dealing with actual "unfun" answers like FOW and Daze suppressing them. Better off just goldfishing your broken decks over and over since no ones going to want to actually play against you, and even if they did it'd be the least interactive format of all time.

DRS kills off anything graveyard related again.
Mental Mistep is auto-include in every deck.
Seems like a crummy format.
That post made me +1 the OP

well, when it is said like that, it sounds fast and savage, but very diverse,I would give it a shot

This sounds like a format. Turn on some death metal, and let us fight to the death in the arena like our ancestors have done in days of old.
I'm in.
Big Thanks to Xeno for sig art <3.
