Plans for reverse redemption onto Magic Online in the works. Will likely be tied to pre-constructed decks first, as opposed to booster boxes and fat packs.
Wizards sees growing competition from other online trading card games, such as Hearthstone and SolForge, and are looking to greatly improve Magic Online to stay competitive.
Sounds like we might be getting more attention and love in the near future.
Have to wonder how this will work. Will you lose the cards if you redeem paper for online? Having to mail your cards to Wizards and have them put them into your online collection would be an enormous hassle on both ends. Or will it be a double value thing for paper cards? You get the online versions through a redemption code and the booster/precon that you bought?
Either way, the fact that Wizard's sees competition on the horizon is probably good news for customers.
Going by the wording of what was said, it sounds as though in the future, you buy a precon deck, and get a code with it you enter into MTGO to get a copy of the precon deck online as well.
Personally I would love to see scratch off type cards (similar to the WOW TCG loot cards) randomly inserted into boosters that give you a code you enter online for <something>. Promo card, online packs, etc. That way if you don't care for online, you can use it to trade with someone who does, and being scratch off, it means you know when its been redeemed.
Would be great to see inserts in paper boosters for random cards/boosters/product/etc...for mtgo! I would even pay $6 a pack for "premium booster that doubles as mtgo booster as well. If done right this could add loads of mtgo players. Im sure it would piss off mtg shops everywhere though...unless...these premium packs are only available at mtg shops and not big retailers.
this would be awesome. i dont have a large playgroup for paper so i dont like spending money on paper cards when im trying to build my online collection, but being able to buy a pre-con of paper to play with my friends and also having those cards online for more serious play is definitely a win-win

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it put an evasive creature in its deck over a narrow hate card.

If a card isn't worth your opponent removing, it's not worth putting in your deck.
That sounds pretty awesome really. A booster box that retails for 50% more and lets you redeem a box online. It even seems like it would increase the number of people playing online since one of the biggest reasons people don't play on there is they have to start a completely new collection from scratch.

The problem with that idea in particular lies in the disparity between meatspace actual prices (MSAP) for packs (in most U.S. urban areas) and the price that MTGO charges for packs. The only way it would really work is if Wizards enforced MSRP for such a box, and I am pretty sure the people that are used to paying $85 for a box will pas on a much more expensive box that has some reverse redemption attached to it.
I'll probably start buying paper precons if this goes through and you don't lose the paper cards. Seems like a good way for me to get back into paper while maintaining my online collection, which is something I've wanted to do for a while.
I love the idea, but must assume that the precons will probably be gold bordered for the actual deck and have real boosters or something like that at least.
