I just wanted to chime in and say that I got my own custom playmats working, but I did run into a hitch.
There was a weird issue with permissions on my PC, running windows 7. It simply wouldn't recognize changes made to the graphics, or new images added to that folder. If you covered this in your tutorial I apologize, but I thought I'd mention it here.
What I did to resolve this was I simply copied the images from the gamemat folder, and then pasted them into a brand new folder named gamemat. I deleted the original folder and images inside, and simply dragged the new gamemat folder into there. After that, it worked find.
This may be a roundabout way of fixing it, but I am pretty sure the crux of the problem is with folder permissions. This was the fastest way to get around it for me, and now it works like a charm! I was able to make a gamemat using artwork from my RL Steve Argyle playmat. Looks a lot better than green felt.
silly that those are client side, but I guess that saves WotC from having to deal with pornographic images being transmitted over thier software.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
Thats pretty awesome. First thoughts when seeing the title was you must of gotten MTG and MTGO mixed up. After seeing your video I saw I was clearly mistaken and now I want to make a few.

Gaea's Regent: Very cool Agur, just made my own and it looks great.
Thanks a lot. I was surprised when I hadn't seen anything about it online. Its pretty fun and pretty darn easy to do as well, I hope we can spread this to the greater mtgo community.

Yeah, I was thinking of a thread where we could post our custom mats, but it might be risky (copyright infringement, and such things)
But I do wonder... if two people have the same file, e.g. ZombieInvasion.png, will they see each other's mats? Would be a cool thing, for buddies or even clans.

I don't think it would be a copyright problem as long as we didn't sell said pictures.
And testing that would be cool as well, it'd be really interesting if you could sync up art with someone.
Yes. If both players have the same filename in their respective folders, that file will be shown.
However, each player will only see the version of the file that is on their system. If both players have a file called Wazoo.png, but they are different images, each player will see the Wazoo.png that resides on their own system.
Oh but the day someone else has this mat against me, I'll be very excited:
I've got these two playmets, both named after the first image i grabbed, the cactus is Green Felt and the other one is Overworld.png. But here they are.

So I found that by pre-squeezing the images they should look better on single player screens, but it really depends on your screen resolution and the width of your playmat in game.
Much thanks for this! I LOVE this sort of thing and totally got into making all sorts of mats. Nothing too interesting just yet, but I really dig the idea of posting them here so we can all see eachother's mats if we end up playing and what not.
I've just been saving pics, turning them into png files using just plain old MS Paint and adding the "_a" to the end and throwing them in the appropriate folder. That seems to be working just fine too.
Is it at all possible to get an image that will blend with its self when copied on top of its self? You could then have essentially have one giant play mat if the images blend seamlessly to each other across the board from each other.
PS
I'm also waiting for someone to make an excel Spreadsheet of one so to the casual glance it looks like you're doing work.

Hi
well actually if they are on server you have no choice to download it you can view a picture remotely
example when you see the logo on mtg salvation your webbrowser download the image on your computer and after that its show the image
in others word the only thing thats in my opignion are not nice others people cant see your background and still see the basic one but its can reduce the size of mtgo a lot by this way because if every body make for example 2 custom background and you have to download every background from player you play with its can be a real pain and use your bandwith a lot of pretty nothing
Question: If the other player doesn't have my file (most likely) what mat will they see?
In this casual game I played, my opponent's mat was totally black, is that it? Did he have a custom mat?
There only going to see what ever playmats they have on there PC. So its a one sided view of the custom mats. If you have a mat called "X" with Jace, The Mind Sculptor on it and they have mat "X" they will see what ever they made mat "X" into and not yours.

Thanks Neros. I was aware of that, my Green Felt mat posted above works the way you describe. But I was wondering more about having Kittens_a.png when that file name doesn't exist in the other PC.

Maybe we should make this thread into a place where we download each other's playmats and keep a database.
That would be a lot of work lol.
