Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I am really want to know what benefits are to trash-talking (besides self indulgence) for the game, the community, for each other.
As I said, discussing trash-talking doesn't need trash-talking. Everyone can express their opinions and is entitled to them. Just don't break the rules and this thread (and each user) will be fine.
Before that happens he says:
Him: Wow, GG
Me: GG
Him: Amazing Top Decks (this is what i mean by "insults disguised as compliments.")
Me: Thanks, but I've drawn 2 straight mountains. I was just waiting for you to tap out.
Him: Yeah, whatever, you're so lucky.
I bit my tongue and just kept on... This happened a month ago though, and it still bothers me. And I've been raged on plenty since then; and can't remember what any of them said.
So... That type of trash talk (the weak kind) - is what gets to me. I can handle a person cursing me out all day... That amuses me....
lol, this happens to me all the time when I play at a real life ptq or online. you will meet one of these people who say this type of stuff when you beat them.

If trash talking affects you unduly, you're probably taking the game too seriously or have inferiority issues that flare up when people give you a ribbing. Being passive aggressive on someone when you get lucky and win is way more antisocial than just expressing modest amusement to their tirades, especially if you actually think you're the better player. No one likes a snarky, uptight dbag and you come off like a nerdy hall monitor type with no friends. Just laugh it off and you'll not only look like the better man, it's a classier way to live in general.
Trashtalking people on magic online is a complete and utter waste of time.
(just like this thread has been for me for a couple of minutes to take a break from work)
It's not a waste of time for me or why would I do it? It's fun.
for the people that like to trashtalk
Keep 2 things in mind:
1. A lot of players don't bother checking the chat thing or just minimize it. (or they are also doing other stuff)
2. A lot of people can't understand what you are typing even if they WOULD check the chat (because face it, the world is a wee bit bigger than native english speakers and you don't need a complete grasp of the language to be able to play magic online)
To the people that might worry about getting trashtalked, like pointed out here by others, don't take the bait and just play your game.
Besides, magic online has quite a lot of tools to help you with this (minimize chat window, block users, report players for violation of code of conduct, the orcs ..)
Makes me think you don't really know what I'm talking about.
Im from Philly so yeah glad you picked up on that.
To the AngelsRNG mega post, realize that what is rude or trash talking to one person might be nothing to the next. I guess only your opinion matters, but since the OP was talking about Rude behavior, it is interesting to see what people think Rude behavior is. This is why we have harassment lawsuits, cause someone thinks their behavior is acceptable while someone else finds it offensive.
The problem with online is knowing the true meaning behind what someone is saying/typing. When your playing some random person you've never built a relationship even the most minor of things can be looked at as rude. I was watching a stream the other night, and someone who lost in an 8-4 draft said good luck to the streamer and he went off about who RUDE it was to say something like that cause cause he played with skill not luck? Than the streamer followers were typing in chat, no you idiot he was wishing you good luck in the finals.
So yeah, I did read the OP part and my replies were more about what people see as trash talking. Whining about a loss can be just as much trash talking as a bad winner. The post was about how we treat each other online versus than how we treat each other in say the environment of a LSG face to face. Cause I know if half the stuff said to me on MTGO was ever said to me or others in the LSGs I play at someone would be bleeding.
Okay. So violence okay but whining or trash talking is okay. Suprising that I get called immature in this thread.
You know, to be honest, I could not care less if after trash talking my opponent laughs and joins in or is actually hurt by my comments. I really don't mind, I just find most of the passive aggressive behavior on MTGO to actually bewilder me(The ones that say "lucker" "Great top deck" etc etc). I don't understand these people at all.
ITT: People who don't understand people who can have fun in a different way to themselves.
I don't mind certain elements of trash talk... I play Pauper Burn almost exclusively; and I get raged on all the time for playing a "no skill" deck; or a "little kid" deck.... I find a person raging to be hilarious. I can say that I've only done it back when I feel someone is toying with me when they can easliy win (which doesn't happen often).
What bothers me more than trash talking or raging is the sly insult disguised as a compliment. Or when they GG you, and when you GG them back - they make a rude remark....
Example of both in one:
I have a Kiln Fiend down against a post player who's at 7 life...
I have 2 cards in hand; he has 6...
He taps out all his mana to play a mulldrifter and drops a Glimmerpost (assuming he drew it off the mulldrifter) he goes to 10 life...
On my turn - I draw a mountain and play it; chain lightning his mulldrifter, and fireblast him for 4; and with a 7/2 Kiln Fiend - I hit him for lethal..

So... That type of trash talk (the weak kind) - is what gets to me. I can handle a person cursing me out all day... That amuses me....
Everyone in the thread should stop writing like a hurt child and read this post.
Also, for anyone that has played enough online games to realise that saying GG is now a negative thing, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7mPqycQ0tQ
Wait, you don't socially interact with people on the internet? Someone should tell Facebook to shut their doors, then, since their whole business model is based on what seems to be a false premise.
Facebook, at least for myself, is only people I have met in real life. Not random people on the internet that I couldn't care less for.
If someone who is every friday at my FNM died, I'd be saddened. The same applies to forum regulars I interact with (and it has happened a few times in the history of this very site).
Ok, fair enough. I get the whole forum regulars that you interact with positively I understand.
If a friend who goes to FNM with me died, I'd be devastated. The same applies to every friend I have made in these forums, even if I've never met some of them in person.
No just a coward. You freely admit to acting out when there can be no consequences, and reserving yourself in fear when there can be. This makes you a coward.
Also, MTGO is played on real computers by real people, making you a douche in real life. There is no differentiating it.
The fact that you are only a douche when you can get away with it makes you a grade A coward. Have fun with that. But stop fooling yourself.
As if I call people names on the internet it makes me a coward and a douche? Isn't that what you just did to me? I really think you should think about a coherent argument before you post on the forums. It just makes you look rather angry at the topic with no real basis as to why.
People do make it bother them, that's one of the things that makes it fun, that people are immature enough to get angry over this. Another thing that makes it fun is when people also enjoy it and do it back.

This, 1000 times.
Also thanks to GR for keeping the conversation here civil. Some people just don't like what other people say if it's of a different opinion.
I personally feel sorry for anybody who feels the need to trash talk. It's just a game! It's meant to be fun for everyone involved and if you're not having fun b/c someone is acting immature and trash talking then don't play with them anymore. If you're one of those people who only has fun when you're ruining the game for someone else then your playing partners will dwindle until you have to show some signs of decency (or keep your mouth shut) just to get a game going. I try not to associate with immature people and in my opinion trash talking in a card game is as immature as "I know you are but what am I?" and "yo Momma".

I play Magic to have fun and losing is not fun, so when my opponent actively participates in me not winning, I will turn the situation around and participate in me trash talking so I can at least enjoy myself. It is a win-win. My opponent gets to enjoy winning and I get to enjoy trash talking.
I don't think it's fair to expect me to sit there completely miserable while I lose. I don't think it is asking for much to let me get a little bit of enjoyment out of the situation too by trolling or trash talking. At the end of the day I enjoyed myself and my opponent won. Win-win. It's a game, it's supposed to be fun. And I will have fun. And if my opponent thinks winning is fun he will have fun.
I don't actually partake in trash talking much on MODO. Theres too much typing involved. I'd rather right click and pick a smiley. I like trash talking in person because you get to watch the post game rage and sometimes you get to watch the person take it out on one of their friends or someone in their group. Plus everyone else can witness it and I love an audience. It's good for inside jokes too.

Has nobody heard the expression "it's not whether you win or lose it's how you play the game"? I know losing isn't winning but if you only have fun playing Magic when you're winning maybe it's time to find a new hobby. This is why me and my girlfriend don't play together anymore. Even when I am losing I still have fun playing the game of Magic. I make casual conversation with my opponent, play the cards I am dealt and try to pull out a victory. Win or lose we both have fun.

Trolling and Trash talking by definition is NOT socially accepted and is considered negative actions. So yea in my opinion it is asking too much. You are also operating under the assumption that all your opponent wanted was a "W" in the win column. What if their only goal was to have an enjoyable game with a fellow Magic player which was ruined by your incessant, childish, trashtalking? Are you saying that your idea fun should be held above all others playing the game?

Sowing ill will among friends and playgroups is your idea of fun? Making people get mad while playing a game that is suspose to be fun and make you happy. Sounds a little sociopathic to me. I am glad you aren't one of the bad ones on MTGO but remind me to steer clear of your card shops.

While I certainly don't think anyone likes losing... there is such a thing as being a grown up and taking it on the chin. Yes, I get that some play groups thrive on being douchebags to each other... but when that bleeds over into a larger group, the word gets around that they can't shut off that side of themselves, and no one wants to play with them. Being a member of serveral gaming groups, I see this all the time. So-and-so walks in the door, and suddenly people stop showing up because they can't stand the attitude problem. It's just as bad when people can't "win well" too! Funny enough, it's usually the same guy!
I try to enjoy myself without talking trash. What's more, I find that trash talking is really only putting yourself down. Like the last few posts cover, most of the time you're only ever going to talk trash if you're losing, and then it just comes across as whining.
I know the feeling .. losing. "This deck sucks", "how did I break it", "why am I not getting the cards I want" ... it's frustrating and naturally you want to say something. But when I start talking trash, then I just get more upset because no amount of trash talking is going to change the fact that I'm losing.
If someone talks trash to me while losing, I normally just smirk and think to myself "Been there, bro." ... But sometimes it gets bad and I have to defend myself in some way. I think the most prevalent of these attacks are things like "That deck is so easy to play" or "You suck and you're just winning on luck". I hear things like this, and I seriously wonder if these people have even began to understand the game.
Everyone wants to win every game, but no one is going to win every game. I'd hope that anyone who understands this wouldn't talk trash, because being upset about losing in magic is like being upset about exhaling in life.

Sorry to say but most people who can deal with trash talk are way more secure about their play and comfortable interacting with others than people who feel the need to make everything safe and antiseptic for the people just starting out or who will plateau and never get any better. If it ruins the game for you, maybe you should stay in the kiddie pool and not come out. Bear in mind I'm not talking about dominating newb players and then giving them hell for not being experienced, but when you've played the game for a while, if you still get angry or incensed by someone giving you hell, you should go back to playing Words with Friends where you can stay in your emotional cloud.
Yes it's something that children say and I hope you're not a fully grown adult asking anyone to take this as a serious point.
Are you kidding me? It is a serious point and if you don't think so I hope you don't have children or at least that you teach them good sportsmanship even though apparently you don't belive in it. My parents raised me to do anything best to my ablities and if I lose just take it like a man and work on getting better. I can't even imagine what kind of issues a kid would have if you told them "Always WIN and if you do lose just start acting immature". If trash talking makes you feel better about yourself than go ahead and talk trash just don't expect to make many friends doing so.
I personally feel that the immaturity attached to the game of Magic is hendering not only the growth of the player base but also peoples general outlook of MTG players. With all the elitism and trashtalking it's hard for me at least to actually sit back and enjoy the game.

Then go find a new hobby. Something less competitive.
If AngelsRNG post doesn't prove my point about the trend of arrogant, elitist, Magic players then I guess logic is lost. Telling someone to "go find a new hobby". It's like you don't want any new players at all. Like everyone should conform to your idea of how competitive the game should be or quit. When in reality older more experienced players (which I am assuming you are) should encourage new players and the casual aspect of the game. Also I was merely pointing out that if other peoples misery actually makes you happy then that sounds a tad sociopathic to me. I was not in any way making any assumptions about anybodys mental health on this forum, it's called a opinion.

Have you considered staying at Yahoo! games permanently? Trash talking is not only common, it's universal at the top levels of play in basically any competitive venue you can imagine. The worst sports anywhere are the ones that get bent out of shape because they lose their head as soon as they get the slightest bit rattled, in reality those are the people that no one wants on their team because they tend to fail when the chips are down - the Alex Rodriguez and Terrell Owens' of the world who melt in the face of the slightest criticisms.
If you don't enjoy the game as it is, don't play it. You're not entitled to playing Magic any more than I am to be a world champion skater. I'd say you'll be missed, but there are already enough whiny killjoys in it.
I didn't realize this topic was going to become so popular. So let me elaborate on why I posted this.
I don't have the money to play all the formats that are offered. So I like watching Daily Event results matches. And certain players during the Daily Event matches keep popping up in the 3-0 vs. 3-0 bracket. These certain players CONSISTENTLY trash talk against their opponent if they lose and go down to 3-1.
Now, I know it's a huge money loss if you make 3-1 instead of 4-0. But these players sometimes consistently make 4-0, and there's no trash talking there. But if they get a bad mull, it's F* you to the person, F* you to the shuffler, and F* you because you're a lucksack. I could give you a list of five to seven people that are guaranteed rage quitters if you wanted.
But as for the casual game. Sure, go ahead and trash talk. I agree that's part of the game. It's just these "professional" players who consistently demean their opponent's that really grinds my gears.

Is *snip*one of the people you are talking about? I've seen him whine a lot when he's down.
I disagree with the notion that trash talking is pervasive and therefore acceptable conduct. There is a reason why we have rules for unsportsmanlike conduct, like flagrant fouls for profanity in basketball. For the spectators, we want to keep the image of the game respectable and family-friendly. For the players, we want to unburden them from strategizing what is the best way to make the opponent feel upset and uncomfortable. I'd rather the game be friendlier to newcomers and less of a troll/flame operation for the players.

First off a big reason why nobody wants T.O is b/c he trash talks fellow players in the media. Like he did when he threw his QB under the bus in an after game interview (google: Terrell Owens Trash Talks). If you're going to use football metaphors get it right.
Second off again you're assuming a certain level of competiveness. I mean c'mon like banihex stated in his post this attitude is carrying over to the planewalker deck room! That is suspose to be a place where new players can hone their skills without fear of being ridiculed. Even with nothing at stake some people still get bent out shape and start talking trash. I also assume that if I was to say some the trash talk people see online in a RL tourney I am pretty sure I would have to answer to a judge for my misconduct and excessive profanity risking getting thrown out in the process.
Also yes I am entitled to play MTG. It's not like a destiny that few can reach. That is the exact attitude that is alienating new players. Anyone that can go to the store, buy a few cards, and find a friend to play is entitled and has the right to play Magic the Gathering. You also have every right to be a "World Champion Skater", if you work hard at it and try not to trash talk your competiton than go for it. I wish you luck.:)

I trash talk when people play too much counter spell in "casual game" or when people get angry just because he lose
That almost seems like a contradiction. If the person is dropping a fair number of counters and you win, it's likely that you wouldn't care enough about the counters to trash talk, so it comes across as "I only trash talk when I lose to counters or someone else gets angry because they lost to the strategy I play".

Odds of pulling a JtMS from a WWK pack: 1:80
Odds of pulling any specific rare in 5th Edition: 1:133
So, on average, 1 JtMS every 2.222 boxes or 1 Bird of Paradise every 3.694 boxes. Yeah, I'll take my odds with Mythics, they are easier to get than old rares.

well i still can win vs counters whats i mean its too much counter spell on "fun games" are boring and not fun no matters if i win or lose
if i lose its does not make me angry i cant win all match and losing its a part of the games
like playing a snap caster mage deck with like 20 counter on it
or creature and counter spell only
in my opignion 4 counter spell is enough in fun games not more
I don't do too much trash-talking on MTGO because I think it's mostly unnecessary. I make two exceptions - I am much more freely expressive if I'm acquainted with the person (i.e. know your audience) and if I lose in a paid event to the shuffler to a crappy deck I get a bit vocal about it. I guess it's not exactly trash-talking so much as something left-handed like "I guess the deck wanted me to have 7 more lands instead of anything useful" in a game where I saw a total of 11 lands to 6 spells, 3 of which were in my opener. I mean Dawntreader Elk, Ulvenwald Bear, Kessig Recluse, 3 Forests, 1 Plains is a reasonable keep...and in game 1 the opponent cast Divine Reckoning when I only had 1 creature out (which was not a Werewolf, in case you thought of giving this person the benefit of the doubt on having SOME reason to cast it). It resolved and did -nothing-. When players like that are able to win a round, it feels like there's no justice in the gaming world.
I give the player so much more respect if they at least acknowledge what's happening.

I don't do any trash-talking on MTGO because there is no point. I also don't do any trash-talking in person at events because, again, there is no point. If a person derives enjoyment from demeaning and insulting verbal jabs, they need to grow up.
I play Melira Pod in Modern on MTGO. It is a deck that I am very comfortable with and I know how to run it and sideboard it against most competitive decks in the format. I do the vast majority of my playing in the Tournament Practice room where, by my reasoning, there should be more players trying to test and tune competitive decks against the the top decks in the format. Lately, the problem has been people running decks that they thought up (more power to them) and me running over them with my deck. When the game starts going my way, they send messages like "stupid netdecker" or "go build your own deck" or, my personal favorite, "u r so gay for playing that gay deck."
I like to win, yes. But is there any need for the above statements? Absolutely not. Heck, I get run over by some decks, and I would never dream of making degrading comments to the other player. Their deck and/or their play was better than mine for that game or match, and they won. It doesn't matter if I got mana screwed, mana flooded, or I just couldn't draw the cards I needed. Those things happen in MTGO and in paper MTG. Many people need to grow up on MTGO, but most never will due to the anonymity of being a keyboard warrior.
You basically answered yourself:
As I said, discussing trash-talking doesn't need trash-talking. Everyone can express their opinions and is entitled to them. Just don't break the rules and this thread (and each user) will be fine.
My YouTube Channel
lol, this happens to me all the time when I play at a real life ptq or online. you will meet one of these people who say this type of stuff when you beat them.
Like anime? My AnimeList Profile: zero_99
You can find me on MODO ID: 07Ghost
I'm glad you found a way to cope with having a small *****.
It's not a waste of time for me or why would I do it? It's fun.
Cool?
Makes me think you don't really know what I'm talking about.
Everyone in the thread should stop writing like a hurt child and read this post.
Also, for anyone that has played enough online games to realise that saying GG is now a negative thing,

Facebook, at least for myself, is only people I have met in real life. Not random people on the internet that I couldn't care less for.
Ok, fair enough. I get the whole forum regulars that you interact with positively I understand.
As would I.
Okay let me ask you a question, if I were to die, right now, would you care?
If not, your post is moot as a reply to my previous post.
I don't really know what this contributes, but I'd attribute that reply to a young adolescent if that was said to me online.
This, 1000 times.
Also thanks to GR for keeping the conversation here civil. Some people just don't like what other people say if it's of a different opinion.

People are strange.

I agree.
Uhm, if online and I don't know my opponent, yes? Of course I hold my idea of fun above that of strangers.
If you can make such judgements on someone over a post on a forum I'd rather not have such an ignorant person at my card shop, I'm sure Acid Flashback would agree too.
Wow, this 1,000 times. I'm suprised I havn't posted something like this already.
I'm sure there's no trashtalking here http://www.clubpenguin.com/
It does sound like something that would be told to me when I was 6 years old. Although I do agree with it and don't mind losing
Then go find a new hobby. Something less competitive.
Infraction for flaming.

Page after page I feel like this is just a massive trollfest.
Couldn't have said it better myself.

Let's avoid naming people, please.

My sentiments exactly!

That almost seems like a contradiction. If the person is dropping a fair number of counters and you win, it's likely that you wouldn't care enough about the counters to trash talk, so it comes across as "I only trash talk when I lose to counters or someone else gets angry because they lost to the strategy I play".
Odds of pulling any specific rare in 5th Edition: 1:133
So, on average, 1 JtMS every 2.222 boxes or 1 Bird of Paradise every 3.694 boxes. Yeah, I'll take my odds with Mythics, they are easier to get than old rares.

well i still can win vs counters whats i mean its too much counter spell on "fun games" are boring and not fun no matters if i win or lose
if i lose its does not make me angry i cant win all match and losing its a part of the games
like playing a snap caster mage deck with like 20 counter on it
or creature and counter spell only
in my opignion 4 counter spell is enough in fun games not more
I give the player so much more respect if they at least acknowledge what's happening.
