Just tried to play a match and obviously it will take alot getting used to but as of now I don't like it... I am confused on how to make a match and other simple things but I am a n00b there...
The interface may be different, but the effects are still permanent as if you were using the current MTGO client, so don't get crazy and start trading all your Helvaults for Llanowar Elves.
Trading a useless, unplayable 25-cent artifact that is used in zero formats, Limited included, for a beloved 10-cent staple card? CRAZY!
(Note: I do realize the Helvault might be a bit pricier online due to people needing Mythics for set redemptions. I just thought it was an odd card to use as an example of something you wouldn't want to give away...)
While I admit, I'm definitely one of those dumbasses who hates when things change and just gets confused, but so far I think it's just awful.
The start up page looks really ugly and cold. It doesn't look like a "game" as much as just a sort of filing program if that makes sense to anyone else but me. I hate the colours and the way the windows are set up. The loading time while you're looking through your collection sucks. Setting up a game seems a lot more cumbersome and I know it's just me, but I still haven't even figured out how to make a deck yet.
Maybe I just gotta give it more time, but so far I'm definitely not liking it.

lol I thought likewise... maybe they secretly know Helvault is going to be the stone nuts when RTR hits
I opened up the Beta client for the first time today, and I am still laughing at how bad this is. Seriously, how could they do worse than v3?
Well, its not all terrible. Some things I liked:
-Schedule of tournaments on first page.
-Not taking a million years to open the store
Things I hate:
-The general look and feel. The UI just seems so... basic. If this is a game I am going to spend more per month on than what Starcraft 2 or Diablo 3 costs in its entirety, I expect to get something better looking. I mean... it feels like I am playing something from 1996.
-Notifications for buddies. But maybe that's because most of my friends are bots /foreveralone
-Card zoom sound effects... well, all mtgo sound effects
-Nicol Bolas default theme - what an ugly piece of crap. Luckily it is relatively easy to navigate away from it.
So those are my first impressions. Now to see what the gameplay is actually like...
For those that have attempted to use the Beta? Was I the only one that thought:
A: They made it way more difficult and LESS intuitive to get started in basically every phase from deckbuilding to actually playing. It took me forever to just figure out how to build a deck, save the deck, and play a game of solitaire.
B: The actual gameplay is WORSE, and the interface is horrible.
C: That after many years of development, this is a giant slap in the face.
The only thing I've seen that I can construe as an actual improvement is the deck filtering (somewhat) Holy crap was it horrible.

You can turn off buddy notifications under the account tab (also allows you to change the bolas theme and turn off sound effects)
"Go to the Next Game" is the command for creating a new game? Really?
Host new Game is the proper way to start a new game, however you can still click on a game that's active (Go to next game) is just an auto-matcher Giving you the first available game that has you're same settings.
I can't complete trades, it just bricks
I can't find any decks I've built in the old client
I don't know how to Goldfish (aka Solitaire)
:loads1989clientandplaysmagic:
Trades, i dont have any information about, but i'm not a big trader anyways. As for finding old decks, do you have them set to a place you can normally find them on the V3, if so, Import decklist and find the deck you want to load, the client doesn't allow you to save decklists yourself, it autosaves them when you make changes and saves them server side.
Goldfishing is the same means for playing normally, you just need to select the "Multiplayer options" and select solitare.

Thanks... the trading worked fine the bot I was trading with was just broken.
I'm doing a draft and the draft interface is much, much better.
Quite apart from the repeated crashes, who thought it was a good idea to have the system rearrange all your lands whenever you tap a land, and to rearrange all your creatures whenever you tap a creature? That is so irritating!
I was in the closed beta and I have told them several times through their survey that there was an issue with scrolling through the collections (there is clear lag between when you scroll and when the card images load) and it has not been addressed. Are other people not heavily bothered with the lack of responsiveness?
I was in the closed beta for a while, and I watched this program evolve from ah bug-ridden-mess to a not-so-bad client. It still needs more time to bake though. I'm kind of surprised that they pushed this out now.
But maybe this will allow much greater feedback for further improvement of the client. During the closed beta, the developers seemed somewhat receptive and things did get incrementally better each week. And that was with only a few dozen people online at a time and forums that were virtually dead.
I do love some of the new enhancements to the battle screen though, like the red zone and grouping permanents together.
I couldn't even filter the game list correctly. structure is solely 1 game or 2 and selecting any multiplayer options just blank the entire list. As a 90% mulitplayer player this is unacceptable.
I'll give it a few months longer then I'm selling out. So sick of the entire online gaming industry going to trash. Tired of these jerkoff developers taking their paying client base for granted.

All of these problems are also in V3 (except the notifications, which can be turned off and are hardly a problem in my opinion), so I'm curious how people justify their opinions that the new client is worse. Frankly, the only "worse than V3" complaint that seems actually reasonable for me is the lack of the collection binder.
Having actually played with it now, I can definitely see some area for improvement, but my overall impression is that it is way better than V3, not close.

I have the exact opposite opinion. V3 to me is better in every way, and it's not close. Granted I would need to play around with it more, but after 20 minutes I was disgusted. After another 30 minutes I was finally able to throw a basic deck together. After playing with the battle interface for another 30 minutes I just wanted it all to go away forever and was legitimately embarrassed for the developers.
I understand that they want it to be "different" but I don't know why they would tear apart the things that work. For me the parts of V3 that I find below par are the chat and trade options, and it feels graphically old (though this is a superficial problem that I don't care too much about) and the excessive amount of binder tabs need a fix. That is about all. If they would have just updated the battles graphically on par with DOTP and overhauled some of the social aspects of the online game it would have been nice. Not this trash.

Yeah, that's a bizarre example. They could have at least used like primeval titan or something. Helavault is playable in approximately nothing.
Elves are only good in, I don't know, standard, pauper, legacy, and modern..
The UI doesn't bother me that much, although there are some things that need tweaking.
Anyone played a storm deck yet with the stack taking up 3/4 of the screen?

The UI isn't intuitive. I want to play a game and it takes me nearly a full minute to get to that point after logging in. This shouldn't happen. In the current version there's a nice, big PLAY button right there that I just click and it brings up a window with all the relevant variables. In the new version I'm simply redirected to a screen that feels like I'm looking through a database. God forbid I actually want to play a game of Magic.
Gameplay looks and feels awful. From the start, your match chat window starts off in a part of the screen that's in the way of the game. I couldn't find a way to resize the game window so that the match chat could fit nicely on the side like it does in the current version. I had a hard time figuring out my opponent's hand and deck size because the information blends into all the other information. In the current version we have icons on top of which the numbers are placed. Want to know how many cards are in your hand? There's a very obvious graphic right there. Everything stacks and I can't find a way to get it to unstack. I don't want all my creatures of the same card type to stack up in a pile so that I can't easily tell how many I have. Their idea of how to rectify this is to plop a big ugly number on top of each stack, which makes it difficult to tell which cards are underneath and it's just misery. Don't even get me started about tapping lands. I don't want to have to rearrange my eyes every time a permanent enters the battlefield. Having everything centered and having their position be reliant on so many factors (how many of them I have in play, how many other permanents I have in play, whether any are tapped, how many 'stacks' of a card I have on the field) was an absolute headache. I don't want a big red line to ERUPT in the middle of the battlefield whenever the combat phase happens. It's ugly, disrupting, and unnecessary.
I have yet to try out drafting, so hopefully that'll be better. It just seems like they've taken a number of steps backwards with this. Hopefully they'll look at what they have now and observe what works instead of trying to reimagine the entire client into something that's clunkier than the original was. (Remember actual tables you'd click on to find a match? This, in my opinion, is worse than that.)

Still haven't managed to play any matches, since I'm at work, but the program looks way better, more responsive, and a LOT more intuitive.
Will probably play and record a draft there tonight when I get home.
