There's been rumors of a new client throughout the 18mo I've been using it, but nothing concrete. I do imagine its long overdue for one. Anyone know when MTGO3 was first released?

2008, after several years of delays. That was a good five years after V2, as well.
Incidentally, V2 was nicer in many ways.

When you peer long enough through the depths, the depths peer also through you.
If I recall, MTGO is now programmed in-house. There is a very small development team there (like 2 programmers). The client's ugliness and lack of Mac support keeps me away from it. Wizards may also be slow to update it, because people still use it despite its flaws, so they might feel that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." MTGO brings in a large part of their annual revenue from what I have read on the internet.
4.0 is ugly, but yet, it's still quite capable. although it will definetely take getting used to from those who are veterans of v2 and v3. I'm personally one of those vets, and i still have issues navigating v4's beta

IThey are working on 4.0 for a long time already. There is a beta, but betatesters are not allowed to reveal information. However, having seen some leaked information, it may be better if 4.0 would stick in the beta for a while.
Based on the leaked info, it appears MTGO's user base will feel the same way about v3 compared to v4 - at least without a complete revamp.

Everything in the new client is great besides the actual playscreen and event interface. Also, card images load way too slow. But yes, magic needs an update

I'm definitely in the same boat as you, though I can't even get any real playtesting in as the Beta lags like crazy on my computer. v3 runs perfectly smooth, however.
For everyone that says bad things about v3, I've found it quite elegant, smooth, and easy to navigate. I guess I'm in the same crowd as "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
What they really need in this new client is a way to make bots obsolete, i.e. let accounts setup stores. Maybe a couple of extra bucks for this feature.

Beta is playable for me, but the lag is just insane, even on my desktop with a boatload of RAM and top-of-the-line video card. I simply don't get it.

Same. They should concentrate on adding and integrating more features (especially community-based concepts) rather than these complete overhauls that make huge changes that for the most part only make the interface more complex. Hopefully they take our commentaries seriously (I've been submitting lots of feedback).

Once you've started using multiple monitors it's hard going back to just one.
The way I'm most frequently using it now is having a browser open on one monitor and a game on the other. It's also great when programming, if your IDE allows you to move various sub-windows to another monitor.
The way I'd want to use my setup with MTGO is having the game window on one monitor and all the chat/whatever windows open on the other.
I'm longing for multiple monitor support. To be able to move windows like Chat, ally's hand etc to the other monitor and free up space on the screen to see that actual field would be amazing. Playing a lot of Multiplayer (particularily 2HG) it gets frustrating having so little usable room with so much wasted. I remember V1 and V2...the chat interface was far better, even the ingame interface was more usable.

He is the most interesting magic playing in the world." Old man, "I don't always tap basic lands for mana, but when i do, I tap Gurus."

This is working in the V4 beta. The game, game lobby, chat, and main client are all separate windows instead of tabs within one window. You can put them wherever you want. I've been putting my chat windows on my right monitor along with whatever else and the game screen maximized on my left monitor.

There are a lot of neat features I would like to see in v4, but the chat interface is the only one that really needs revamping.
