Planned for an on-sale date of September 10th, 2007, Masters Edition is a 195 card, Magic Online only set of some of the greatest cards from Magic's past. All cards in the set have appeared in pre-Mirage Magic sets and will appear with their original artwork and old-style frames.
Offered as a booster-only product, Masters Edition will be on sale for a limited time and then removed from our product offering. At least one month of notice with announcements here on the website and in forums will precede removing Masters Edition from the Magic Online store. Leagues, Premier Events and draft queues will begin offering Masters Edition product in events when release events begin on September 14th.
There will be a special Masters Edition-related Oracle update shortly before the product goes on sale.
Booster packs will be sold for $3.99 each and available in the Magic Online store starting September 10th.
Masters Edition cards will be legal in the Classic format and any format that uses Classic to define card legality.
Breakdowns for rarities include 60/60/60 C/U/R, and the 15 basic lands from Alpha/Beta, with standard 15 card boosters. Collation will be 1(basic land) 10c 3u 1r per pack, similar to Tenth Edition collation.
Premium cards will be inserted at roughly the same rate as they are in Tenth Edition as well, at a 1:56 ratio.
Limited play (after release events) will be 10th-10th-Masters drafts, and 10th + Masters for sealed events/leagues. (These do not replace normal all 10th events/drafts)
Here is the deal on the preview rarities from a post on the WoTC boards by Worth:
Quote from WotC_WorthW »
Much like core set philosophies in paper Magic, rarities are not 100% tied to previous editions.
Some of the cards in Masters Edition will shift rarities.
When the set goes to beta I will make sure we post a list of rarities. Until then, have fun guessing.
He has confirmed on a thread here and elsewhere that there will be both up and down movements of rarities.
(10th had some down movements, so it is no huge surprise)
Each preview card can have their own discussion thread in this forum, if people feel the need to make one. I will link to the threads if here if they are linked.
yeah.. its hard for them to but 2 bolts (at potentially common... ) in limited that'd be too awesome.. (its like draft as many incinerates/bolts as possible)
but lightning bolt was pretty much coming.. I wonder what the "green" card will be..
hmm..
Regrowth or Berserk come to mind to me.. those seem like the likely ones..

I just want people who redraft to admit this:
"I can't draft objectively unless I am able to guarantee that I receive at least 3 rares. I am also better than most average/new players so I want to make sure that I get the best rares and they end up with worse ones. I care more about the monetary value of cards than actually playing the game for decent prizes."

Well at least they are previewing by color.
I didn't notice.
And I was fairly sure that limited is a 'lol who cares' type deal.
Chain lightning could be uncommon anyway.

I was starting to think that they wowed us out of the gate with Force of Will and the rest of the set would be underwhelming... but then it was pointed out they are spoiling by color. Given that, I like what I see so far. Juzam (although I love the card) is the only truly disappointing card yet, I'm just hoping they are holding back on black power so they have some goodies to spoil later.

I think black will be the most difficult color to get right for this set. Most of the really exciting black cards from this era are banned in Legacy (Demonic Tutor, Demonic Consultation, Necropotence, Mind Twist), so if they are sticking to only Legacy-legal cards, it will probably be slim pickings for black.
Dark Ritual probably isn't in (it's in Mirage, so there's no point), so that basically leaves Hymn to Tourach and maybe The Abyss as powerful black cards in this set. There will be some fun casual cards, to be sure (Baron Sengir and Oubliette would be nice cards along those lines), but unless they print something that's banned, I wouldn't expect much power. Consultation might be doable and I could kind of see Mind Twist, since they just un-restricted it in Vintage, but I wouldn't bet on it.
i like Berserk it'll be fun with groundbreaker at least.. now that deck can kinda go one color.. should be fun (even though a timely placed lightning bolt can disrupt it.. but it'll be fun all nevertheless)
as for the black cards.. its hard to say if they are making "online Legacy" then black will probably get shafted.. but I don't think so.. I think the only cards that are not going to be seen are about 15-20 cards that were an absolute mistake (like Channel, Fastbond) the power 9 probably won't be online.. Bazaar of Bahgdad probably won't be here.. neither will Mishra's Workshop..
but Animate Dead would make Dragon Combo more viable... maybe Dance of the Dead
I'm thinking its going to be more like T1 without P9 (maybe no Mana Crypt but i think anything else on the restricted list can be there)

well here are the 3 lands that I hope are in the set Elephant Graveyard (I really REALLY wanted this card, just for fun, but its too darned expensive in the paper land)
Strip Mine I would think it would be hard to have any kind of classic formats without this card.. its one for one.. I think its a fair card
Mishra's Factory kind of everyone wants this, and its not hard to see why, the original "man land".. will go great with the ones from tenth hitting online
I said 3.. but I thought of another..
Maze of Ith This card was really good as a colorless way of stopping creatures, it may be a bit over powered, but I can really see it being added online
if its an artifact tonight.. if they are going more towards T1 than legacy I'm going to have to say Sol Ring
If they are going more Legacy then I'll say Magus of the Disk (don't ask me to spell Nev's disk... i can't its impossible for me)
the other ones that kind of strike me off the top of my head Black Vise its a good card, but not great, helps affinity. Copper Tablet I really never seen anyone use this card, so it would be fun to try out. Candelabra of Tawnos its only really abusable with Tolarian Academy which won't hit online for a few years probably
EDIT: I would like to thank Seds and the rest of Salvation for the creation of the MTGO only forum, I notice the "MTGO sucks, its not real cards" talk has all but ceased from the threads, and they are more about the discussion of the cards rather then if MTGO is a good idea or not..

Yeah, but just b/c something isn't good right now isn't a good reason to disclude it from Master's Edition... I mean, this might be the only time they print Pre-mirage stuff. You never know.
I like this card.. obviously its much better than the Magus, but I don't know how useful it'll be..

i checked the autocard for glaciers and the rules state "it gains substance until end of turn"... what does that mean?
As long as it has substance, it stays in play. This keyword was introduced when Mirage was released online, apparently to make the wording on the various "instant-enchantments" (i.e. Armor of Thorns) more understandable.
I don't really understand why substance is being used on a land, though, as it's going to stay in play anyway. It seems to me that a simple "Return this to your hand at end of turn" at the end of the activated ability text would have worked just as well.
Unfortunately, there is a difference between "return to hand at the beginning of end of turn step" and "return to hand during cleanup step".
Without the substance clause, you can activate the ability during the end of (opponent's) turn step, after the point where the trigger would normally occur, then untap and do it again before returning it to hand.
does anyone read the Original post (Intuition is from tempest and is not included in this)
I hope for none of the above and we get Control Magic

Unless they've been seriously holding back I don't expect Mana Drain or anything of a similar power level at this point. I'm very disappointed with what we've seen so far.

A: Either Sol Ring or Nev's Disk
Land: Mishra's Factory
