@fyreelemental, it top 8ed the SCG event this past weekend so it’s pretty ok. Lists must be tailored to the meta you’ll be playing in as dnt is a meta deck at heart. Your ability to tailor it is step one in being successful. A deck that has the flex spots filled with otherwise good cards for the wrong meta will not do well. Be prepared to lose often as this deck has a vicious learning curve.
Good luck.

Your success in playing dnt/hatebears is determined largely by your ability to read and prepare for the meta that you will be playing in. Furthermore, it has an absolutely brutal learning curve. Expect to lose; a lot.
I’ve been playing Wb less eldrazi and taxes for a little while. I’ve had very strong results both in paper and online. Here are my results from tonight.
Round 1: bye
Round 2 vs jund vengevine WIN
Used arbiter and Thalia to lock op out of game one. I sided in RIP, forge tender and fiend hunter in g2 siding out restos and two stranglers and two flickerwisp. This proved to be a mistake as my cards proved not to be high impact enough besides rip. Hollow one proved to be very strong against against me as my cards were not to be terribly high impact. I brought two stranglers and a resto back in. I slowly whittled down ops resources in game 3 two for oneing frequently. Strangler proved to be better than expected.
Round 3 vs ug merfolk LOSS
I mulliganed to four in g1 and he had much to strong of a start with all the typical merfolk tricks. I sided in fatal push and fiend hunters in g2. I kept a canopy one lander in g2 based on being full of removal and a Thalia. I topdecked another canopy on the second turn and played Thalia. Op played the new merfolk lord that taxes removal. This was too much for me to overcome. This was my match to lose and my choices directly led to that. G1 was almost certainly unwinnable but I should have mulliganed in g2. Furthermore, casting Thalia when I didn’t have a vial or a land heavy hand was a mistake which was compounded by the new pseudo lord.
Round 4 vs ug merfolk WIN
I had all my best cards and was able to pick ops hand apart and processing it. I brought In fiend hunters and fatal pushes. G2 had op unfix my mana with spreading seas and outpower me before I could lose the enchantment. G3 was a more even version of g1 with me getting plenty of removal and him drawing lots of high impact creatures. This proved to be a slugfest with him drawing well as I established strong card advantage. I eked out a win for third out of 15 players.
Edited to add: the above list is not correct. The sideboard should have two surgical extractions in place of two dismembers.

So, when I excitedly read up on Eldrazi Death and Taxes and ordered it online, I was disappointed by it when I was on MTGO. I honestly couldn't win any games, whether the tier was tier 1 or tier 4. I despised the deck. On top of that, the mana base is up there in some of the worst mana base I've played with in this format. Too clunky. No BW when I need that turn 2 sculler, vents coming in tapped, courtyards tapped as my fourth land, etc. I couldn't get ahead or win board stalls. I was utterly unimpressed with sculler.
Almost sold the deck on mtgo and was already contemplating selling vial. Decided to try mono white death and taxes just in case. Ended up winning a ton of it in practice, deck really clicked with me. I played a pretty cookie cutter list.
The Open this weekend had me thinking about Displacer, so I'm cutting -1 Selfless Spirit, -1 Aven mindcensor, -1 Crusader for +3 Eldrazi Displacer.
Really not to dead set or crazy about the sideboard. I am pretty certain about the RIP and Stony, Rhetoric for Storm, Censor for Storm and Titanshift. Crusader for green decks, Shadow.
Really not thinking Sun Lance, Dusk // Dawn, Declaration as super fantastic. I'm looking at the open meta, not trying to hate any specific deck since I don't know what's popular at the store I'm bringing this to.
I was surprised to see how many white DnT wasn't running Canopy. I know what the card does, that it's effect isn't and can't be replaced. I do wonder if it's completely right. I could afford the card, but it's price is absurd, the card should drop hard with it being reprinted so soon. If not for that, I'd probable begrudgingly buy the set.
What do you guys think about canopy for the white version?
Doesn't Copter seem too slow?
Is Gideon really worth playing in the side?
I'm also finding any sideboard guides really scarce.
What do you guys think about canopy for the white version?
It's great.
Generally speaking, it competes with the Shefet Dunes slot, so before Dunes existed, Canopy was more common. Now, players get to pick whichever one works best in their deck. I'd recommend keeping Dunes if you're going to run Displacer, but if you cut Displacer, definitely run Canopy instead.
No. If you curve into a Copter and your opponent lets you keep it, he or she will lose to it. Copter was overpowered in Standard and it's very good in Modern.
I'm also finding any sideboard guides really scarce.
This is a metagame deck. The good news is that some form of the deck will always exist, because it's never poorly positioned in the metagame. The bad news is that the maindeck and the sideboard shift rapidly to combat changes in the metagame. You won't find many sideboard guides for two reasons: first, your sideboard is contingent upon your maindeck, which has 6-14 flex slots, and second, the sideboards change very quickly.
If you have questions about sideboarding for a specific matchup, you're better off just asking about it in this thread and waiting for players to give you advice.
Playing millions of cards every turn... Slowly and systematically obliterating any chance my opponent has of winning... Clicking the multitude of locking mechanisms into place... Not even trying to win myself until turn 10+ once I have nigh absolute control... Watching my opponent desperately trying to navigate the labyrinthine prison that I've constructed... Seeing the light of hope fade and ultimately extinguished in an excruciatingly slow manner... THAT'S fun Magic.
We have 2-3 users that are dramatically making this thread incomprehensible and non-productive for anyone else to possibly join in the discussion. This needs to change.
Every time I see [ktkenshinx] post in here, I get the impression of a stern dad walking in on a bunch of kids trying to do something dumb and just shaking his head in disappointment.

@sspiegel, the deck has an absolutely brutal learning curve; ent is steeper yet. Don’t get disheartened.
Catmix wrote a sideboard guide some time ago. I wish I had a link but alas; I do not. Spider wrote another guide that’s in the leonin library in the OP.

So, since I can't get a sideboard guide due to meta changes
Can anyone tell me the matches where I should cut most, if not all aether vials?
Read Covals article, hated siding out vials against storm---is this right, for example?
Thanks in advance
In general for the vials you only want to side them out (or most of them at least) in match ups that will get drawn out with lots of top decks. Decks like this would be Abzan/Jund/Rock decks. A good general rule is if they pack 8 or more 1 cmc discard spells and are not a quick combo deck it will go to a top deck war. In these cases 0-2 vials will be the right choice depending on how drawn out you expect the game to go, as vial is still so powerful if you get one early.
For storm even though multiples are really bad vial still gives you a lot of disruption and versatility. I personally almost never win against storm though, it is just way to consistent now with Baral.

I don't know if there is going to be a consensus on this.
Vial is a great card, but it's a terrible topdeck. It exchanges one card (the copy of Vial) for additional tempo throughout the game. Generally, you should side at least some of them out against the decks where the extra card is more important than the tempo.
Personally, I never side out all of my copies of Vial. Sometimes I board out 1-2 copies against grindy discard decks and also against very fast decks where I might lose by the time my Vial goes up to 3. In other words, I'm boarding out Vials on both ends of the spectrum: when my opponent's deck is blazingly fast or when my opponent's deck is using attrition to win the game.
Storm, however, meets neither of those criteria. It's possible that I'd cut a Vial depending on my opponent's list, but generally I'm leaving my Vials in. The best thing you can do against storm is Vial in Eidolon of Rhetoric with a cantrip or a mana accelerator on the stack in the middle of their combo turn. The Vials also help get around their counterspells.

Does anyone have an opinion on adding a single copy of Rest in Peace to the Mainboard of BW Eldrazi Taxes?
My thinking is that RIP is just strong against SO many decks at the top of the format right now, particularly Storm and Grixis Shadow and any deck running Snapcasters or Gearhulks, while also having zero impact on your own strategy and actually adding value to your Wasteland Stranglers! I guess the concession is that it'll be a little embarrasing the times you draw it against Tron or something, but that's not an especially rough matchup anyway for E&T.
I dunno maybe I'm just sick to death of losing to Storm all the time... but I think this might not be the most crazy idea in the current meta. Let me know what you guys think
@SteveMont When dredge was a deck, you'd consistently see 1-2 relic of progenitus in the MD of BW E&T. If you want to pack MD GY hate (other than trying to fit a bojuka bog in the mana somewhere), I'd recommend relic. It replaces itself so it's not as dead as rip in the bad MUs.
Btw, I'm surprised to hear that you find storm a bad MU. It should be quite favorable for WB E&T. How are you siding?
Which brings me to @Spsiegel1987 We're a metadeck. This means that our SBs change and that we have more MD flex slots than many other decks. This makes having a SB guide a difficult task, especially because many people can't agree on what SB cards should be played. This means that if you want a specific guide, your best bet is something like the Coval article you already read. Beyond that, I'd try paying attention to other players SBs and getting a better understanding of how to build a proper SB with our deck and how to use it. I tried to build a general SBing guide that I try to update to more reflect the meta. It isn't splash specific and more teaches you how to craft one and how SBing generally goes. As Dsmonsta mentioned, it's in leonin's library (there's links in it at the bottom of the primer on the 1st page).
Playstyle might influence how you board as well. For instance, even if I played Coval's exact 75(which I wouldn't), I wouldn't SB the same way he does. But Coval won a large tournament, which is why you might be more tempted to listen to his advice.
The only MU I'd cut all the vials is vs BGx midrange decks where they're going to strip you of your resources and get you into topdeck wars where vial is actively bad. I also never board out vials vs storm. If I had a ton of amazing SB cards, I might board out 1 if I needed the room. I also wouldn't board them out vs dredge or GDS like he does. You need it to stay at some semblance of parody vs dredge and it greatly helps you win the tempo war vs GDS. I forget where else he boards them out.
I though storm was pretty favored to very favored after sideboarding. I had someone actually ragequit vs. me in the last round of wnm last week because he lost so hard. Maybe you are keeping poor hands?
I'm reworking my sideboard for BW E&T. 3 Thoughtseizes seem to be occupying too much space for an effect that is not particularly well positioned. This is my current sideboard.
My meta has a good amount of GBx decks, so the matchup is expected. Otherwise, it is a very diverse LGS with Shadow, Storm, Dredge, UW Control, Burn, Eldrazi Tron, and other archetypes. Given the problematic Dredge matchup, I'm considering ticking GY hate to at least 3 copies. GBx decks can be further addressed by a copy of Gideon, Ally of Zendikar.
I'm wondering if I should go for 3 Rest in Peaces or 2 RiPs + 2 Cages. If I opt for the 3rd RiP I'm inclined to add the 3rd Stony Silence on my last slot. Also, since so many decks depend on their GY status (that is, Cages don't stop Goyfs, Delve creatures, Delirum and the like) I'm wondering if the correct split is 2 RiP + 2 Relics. Any suggestions?
Also, the UW Control matchup (specially builds with multiple Gideons) seems to be miserable. Any viable gameplan besides going full tempo with our taxing creatures?
hello, i am new to mtg kinda and have debated to make a gw dnt deck. is this advisable? or should i stick to the mono white? i was thinking green for renegade ralliers/nobles/etc
hello, i am new to mtg kinda and have debated to make a gw dnt deck. is this advisable? or should i stick to the mono white? i was thinking green for renegade ralliers/nobles/etc
Green-White is a pretty solid D&T variant, especially historically (pre-OGW the highest level wins for D&T were basically split evenly between Monowhite and GW).
Most people do not start there, however, because it does cost significantly more to get started on account of the Nobles (and Canopies), but if you already have those cards (or already have the funds set aside) then it's not that big of a dealbreaker.
So any advice on what we should do against Vizier combo? besides just concede that is. this match-up feels brutal to me. like even if I can stop the balista with stony silence or leyline of sanctity, a 1000/1000 still kills us pretty efficiently. We do have outs beyond that, but are there any ways we can be stand more of a chance in this match-up?
Played in another 4 round tournament with my mono-white "vanilla" death and taxes list went 3-0-1 (intentional draw)(9-1-1 overall). beating esper control, 8 rack and burn. I played the same main deck as usual, but cut the relics and leylines from the board since they weren't pulling their weight and replaced them with mark of asylum, lone missionary and a single linvala, keeper of silence. I am very happy with the 75 and will run most likely the following 75 in regionals. the main and board are set up to be well positioned against a wide variety of decks which rather than honed against a certain deck or type. dryad miltant has been solid for me in a wide variety of matches over the past few weeks, exiling lingering souls, nerfing unburial rights, exiling raven's crime, nerfing snapcaster and saving early damage from goblin guides and swift spears, as well as pushing damage through and forcing control opponents to deal with as to not over-commit to a board. and finks seems much better positioned than crusader with the rise of jeskai.
hello, i am new to mtg kinda and have debated to make a gw dnt deck. is this advisable? or should i stick to the mono white? i was thinking green for renegade ralliers/nobles/etc
I just trained a lot against Grixis Control, storm and Grishoalbrand and finished 5-0, 4-1 and 5-0, respectively. Here is my list:
The primer has been updated to reflect the current meta! I also archived the pervious meta primer and dated accordingly. I plan on continuing this formatting as Modern is probably headed on a wild meta shifting journey over the next 6 months!
Remember, message me with any content for Leonin Library and/or Primer questions!

Love the update but you may want to consider a card breakdown of things not shown. None of the shown lists actually put ghost quarter or horizon canopy into the mono white build nor thraben inspector or alternates like judges familiar.

I really appreciate your comments!
