I would love to see a blue version of Ember Hauler as a merfolk, something like this:
UU
2/2
1, sacrifice: counter target non creature spell unless controller pays 2.
Or
UU
2/2
Etb draw a card
(And make it really busted with this.
U sac, draw a card)
Or have it do literally anything.
I figure if they can push Rampaging Ferocidon, they can push some merfolk too.
Side note, could someone help me with linking card names? All these years I've read the site and I've yet to figure it out.
Fun stuff aside, I like where mono blue is sitting right now, watertrap weaver having relavent creature type makes it just better than the old kor hookmaster. I wonder if there's an alternative build somewhere based on Stonybrook Banneret worth looking at as we keep having merfolk wizards with multiple generic costs and etb effects printed.
Has there been any consideration to the 2 drop that gains flying if you control another merfolk? Or are we really looking at space issues currently?
Keep up the great work everyone!
And have a Fishy Good Year!
Yeah, that's exactly what I saw when I read this. Making itself unblockable is okay, but sorta redundant with so many deck strengths. Drawing cards with 3 Merfolk on the board isn't bad, but doesn't Sygg do that a bit more efficiently? Team pumping at critical mass is unlikely to matter, since with 5 on the table we will probably win. The big thing, I think, is the mix of the second ability plus Mutavault. That plus a 3-cc 2/4 is not really that bad (though not as good as it used to be, when Bolt was more prevalent than Push).
I think this is a serious possibility for the Tropical players, but I don't think it provides as much incentive for the Basic players to switch.
i think for standard its fine, can also see it being decent in commander. But for modern.. i can't but feel it falls short. The first ability works well for simics aggro plan, but its tap merfolk for card draw or pump team seems a bit counter productive too Simics get in and attack style.
Standard Merfolk has needed this card for a while now. It will do nothing for Modern Merfolk.
Honestly I don't think even Standard fish (as it stands) want it. The fish in Ixalan seem to care about +1/+1 counters and unblockable, which this guy doesn't help all too much. If Standard fish swarmed the field like what vampires are doing in Standard then it would make a lot more sense.
This card does make me hope they do make a fish version of Dwynen's Elite.
Gaah Seafloor Oracle was 1 CMC less to be a serious option for monoblue. Not that we haven't played 4 CMC before, but a 2/3 with the payoff it gives doesn't move me that much. Even though it could still get a chance.

I think Reejerey is officially gone from Tropical Fish at this point - its upside is not enough to merit costing an additional mana. I also think this lets Tropical Fish lower its curve enough that I might actually think to test it, at least for a time.
Wow 3 lords now. this is going to be insane. The double explore guy Jadelight Ranger is great too. too bad it's GG. But I do like how fish just got bigger.

That would be pretty awesome. If it's CC were 1U, it might start people trending mono-U again. Don't think we're likely to see it, though.
