I haven't had much trouble with 4 Weavers, 4 Reejereys, and 2 Kopalas. If anything, it's made the likes of Engineered Explosives and Ratchet Bomb worse against me, because I can mount a credible offense with 3-drops.
Is heroic intervention really worth a sb slot? I get that it’s good vs. a verdict but that’s one matchup that’s already decent
I have found it helpful in a few instances, though counter magic could have been just as effective, but I did pick up a game against gbx tron, after an o-stone was resolved and on the board, though I understand that a counterspell could have stopped it from landing on the board in the first place. In this case, I luckily top decked the heroic intervention the turn after the o-stone resolved.
Our (sea)horse at SCG Invi tournament, AJ Kerrigan, is fourth in the standings, 7:1 after day 1.
He lost 1:2 to Jund in round 5. Regular monoU with Waves.dec.
His one loss was on camera if anyone wants to watch it.
Looks like he is running Kira over Kopala, or at least I saw Kira during his match and not Kopala so I am assuming he is running one over the other. I suppose he cold be running one of each. Where is everyone on these two cards? Which are you running and why?
The thing that frustrates me about his loss to Jund was seeing Vials in his deck postboard. I thought that taking those out against grindy decks would be common knowledge at this point. That might have been a win if he had boarded properly.
I have been playing a decent amount with death and taxes, and I find it funny the criticism that the death and taxes matchup got harder. Leonin arbiter can only fall on turn 2, so even if you a fetch land in hand you will have the opportunity to crack it before the arbiter hits play. I honestly don't understand what is the problem that people are having against Death and Taxes.
I should have been more clear in this scenario. I had 2 non fetches on board in the face of an arbiter with no ghost quarters in play. I had no other lands in hand for the following turn and decided to progress the board state. They ended up having a Ghost Quarter on their T3 and my next 2 lands drawn were fetches. The point I was trying to get to was UG has zero ways to get around an untapped arbiter if you draw your fetches (which is close to a third of your mana base).
We have Masters tournament (24 best players from final standings) at the beginning of next year, where we fight for the second half in the prize pool (I lost to ETron in the finals last year, quick 0:2).
Until then, I am probably picking U folk for Team Modern Unified GP Madrid, next weekend. Good thing is that we have 3 practice tournaments, 4 rounds each, on Friday before the GP. 12 rounds will tell us what needs to change, if anything, regarding our deck and card choices. I have to give up Caverns and Relics for unified rules, but as a Merfolk player I am used to handicap
I wish I did, sharing is not a problem, but I don't.
At this moment my focus is on a GP with handicapped list, which doesn't help any of you who can still play Relics and Caverns, so most advices from that are irrelevant. If my team doesn't crush and burn I will be more than happy to answer any Qs.
In any case, I will have 20+ more matches at GP level next weekend, hopefully I beat 20th place from GP Lille or, at least, learn something.
I'm also here to report on my Watertrap Weaver testing. I still believe the card has potential in some metagames; however, the MTGO meta I've been facing has gotten a lot heavier on red decks. Whether it be Burn, Dredge, Grixis Shadow, Jeskai, Jund, or some more fringe decks like UR Breach or the BR discard aggro deck that has popped up of late, I've been seeing lots of Conflagrate, Kolaghan's Command, Lightning Bolt, Lightning Helix, Searing Blaze, and Electrolyze, and I have thus opted to put Master of Waves back in. However, if your meta is heavy on Affinity, E-Tron, or Humans, I highly recommend the Weaver.
@Markhaim: My guess is that you'd have to abscond with at least a couple of Mutavaults, and Caverns can be a bit of a dicey proposition. I'd say 20 lands with 18 U sources is the way to start trying to make that work.
It seems from various people's testing that Watertrap Weaver really shines in some match-ups while being poor in others. Isn't this the definition of a solid sb card then? Instead of losing life to Dismember we can employ the Weaver to help us in aggro match-ups. Thoughts?
I mean, I guess you can sideboard in the Weaver, but what would you cut to include it in the 75? Certainly not Dismember, with Counters Company and Storm still being prominent. I'm iffy about cutting countermagic for it, given the presence of so many U-based control decks. Relic seems like it's better against the likes of Snapcaster decks, not to mention any random graveyard-based combo out there. I think it has to be main if you do choose to play it.
It looks like there's going to be more 1/1 hexproof merfolk token enablers in Rivals. Now that I think about it, I wouldn't mind a fish version of Dwynen’s Elite that makes the token.
Part of the spoilers of the foil FNM promos. They showed other tokens that previously weren't in Ixalan that will be in Rivals, but dunno, I could be wrong.
Hey fish people! I've been thinking about building Merfolk for a while, after reading some of the great info here I've decided to join the ranks! Time to start card hunting.

I chose some stuff from the prize wall:
