Another merfolk spoiled....isn't bad...again, I don't know what I would want to remove to play this, so generally i'd say it's not worth it...still an interesting card for the deck.
Argh, come on!! Almost every creature they show in the set is powered above curve and with abilities on top, is being a Merfolk so terrifying? at least make it a 2/1 with that ability, or make it cost U!
Edit: Missed the unblockable part. While my complaint remains (I'd rather remove unblockable and have it cost U or be a 2/1), that adds some value (not the one we want in a Merfolk since we usually islandwalk, but still, it's value). Cast a lord and swing for 3 unblockable is not bad. And it's enter the battlefield, not cast, so not a nonbo with Vial.
Hope there's something nice left for us, and if not, Rivals still might bring some goodness
River Sneak doesn't quite cut it but I like the direction this set is going and really hope Rivals brings some effective G cards. It's long been a goal of mine to have a highly competitive UG Modern Merfolk deck!
That being said, I busted a gut laughing at the comments here from a bunch of new players raging at Rothgar13's non-acceptance of their crappy lists haha C'mon kids, you're dealing with one of the Alpha-Sharks and you think you can change his mind with no results, or that he is wrong when you are admittedly new to the deck or at least not seasoned players? You won't find many players who will help you as hard as he will to become great at this deck. Don't piss in the pool just because you want the splash to work out and a veteran thinks you're spinning your wheels. *hint: you definitely are*
We have a long running ethos in this group that makes this literally the best forum community for any deck in modern.. Respect The School.
Part of that is proving your wild claims with relevant results, recognizing the real Fish players and listening to their knowledge, and not assuming you're right all the time, especially as a new player of the deck and format! Also please please please check your commander mindset at the door; you can make a thread in developing competitive for UG Merfolk, and should it become a real list we can talk more here about it and plenty of us, myself included, would LOVE for that to happen.. But until it does, this is the thread for *competitive* merfolk, not speculative lists backed with aggressive attitude and no results!
Much love to my fishes, may we all become sharks. Respect the school!

I really don't understand Wizards' R&D. I mean, they didn't care at all that they would break the format when making such overpowered Eldrazis that had obvious synergy with the previous Eldrazi expansion, same with artifact expansions besides Kaladesh, but it feels like they are designing all the merfolks in the tangent line of the deck to be unable to add a SINGLE ONE (beside Toppaka so far) to the deck, when this expansion is strongly merfolk-themed. It's really too early to speak, but seen the spoilers it feels like it.

Search is all kind of bad in our deck.
No impact on etb, Legendary so more copies are bad, we are not filling our graveyard fast enough (unless opponent "helps"), payoff is 4 mana to likely put the top 4 cards on the bottom. I would rather play Thassa.
With Temples, yes. Turn 3 if they accelerate with Noble Hierarch is fine by me.
With more colorless options coming from Ixalan and with lands we already have (Cavern, Muta, Tec Edge...), we could also play TNS.
It is just that the thing is not busted enough for us, or other nonEldrazi decks.
Surgical can definitely be considered as a graveyard hate piece. It has the advantage of never needing to be babysat using mana, and it has some nice synergies with cards that destroy lands or creatures. I'd say that Relic is something I'd be somewhat uncomfortable cutting from my sideboard altogether, but I can definitely see a meta where Relics 3-4 become a pair of Surgical Extractions instead.
speaking off... last rare in the set is kind of mash up of those two: Field of Ruin. Not sure it's autocarded yet, but it's a brown land (taps for C, and you can pay 2 and sac it to destroy non-basic land, but ALL players get to search up a basic. My guess is that the 2 mana is *probably* too much, since it doesn't (like Tec Edge) keep them off of 5, but there might be some extra greedy manabases that it screws.
Who here streams? Having just started to grind leagues on MTGO hard I'd like to be a part of the streaming community if there is one. I like Nikachu's videos but it would be more fun to chat with the pilot.
Would you like to read Commander stories? Check my latest stories, coming from Lorwyn and Innistrad: Ghoulcaller Gisa and Doran, The Siege Tower! If you like my writing, ask me to write something for your commander as well!

Personally the main reason I use Echoing Thruth is because it allows me to bounce multiples, which can be quite efficient against (infinite) token creatures, three goyfs on the board, etc.
Trading that off for potentially scry 2? Not sure it's worth it.
I think it's close, but not quite there. A big reason to play Echoing Truth is to bounce problematic permanents like Ensnaring Bridge, and this card does nothing if the opponent has multiple Bridges in play. Echoing Truth is also decent in aggro matchups where you can bounce multiple threats that redundant aggro decks tend to deploy. Scry 2 is also less valuable in a game that isn't going past turn 6 or 7.
Scrying is an attractive carrot, but I'm still going to lean toward Echoing Truth, namely because most of the cards I bounce with it aren't CMC2 or lower, and because of the ability to bounce all copies of a card (answers Empty the Warrens tokens/multiple Ensnaring Bridges or Ghostly Prisons cleanly). It would be very close if the scry 2 happened no matter what, though.
