I don't know about you guys but Young Peezy's been underperforming lately for me. I'm almost never happy seeing him in my opening hand because I need to keep him in my hand for as long as possible to be able to get some value out of him. It's even worst against Jund/Junk (or maybe I'm just too harsh).
Thinking about testing Ryan Overturf's build again. But then again... I'm not sure if his version is a worst Grixis Control variant.
I think the line is more blurred now then ever. Most lists are running 3 mana leak, 3 snare. Some lists are successful with pyro, and some without. Having played most if not all the grixis delver variants, and grixis control, the only thing I can say is to play test your different builds.. I like grixis control's late game power, but I also want the ability to pressure the opponent so I came up with my cryptic delver list, which is pretttttty much grixis control -4 ancestral, +4 delver. IMO grixis delver is more explosive and has fairly consistent great early game pressure, but loses a little power late game.. While control has pretty much no early pressure without a t2 tas, but amazing mid-late game with cryptic, snap, kolaghan, land drops, and of course t1 vision, but also can have trouble closing games.
Doesn't Painful Truths do a bunch of work against midrange? Why opt for a 5-drop when you can have that? As for Tron hate... I think 5 SB cards is plenty, given that it's on a bit of a downtick of late.
I'm not that happy with a deck that seems control but it's just worse. When I've sided my AVs in I often played better than in g1. I think that YP is needed in Delver, that's why I'm gonna play it in this FNM. The only thing I'm not sure about is my last SB SLOT. I don't know if I wanna go hard on Tron hate (currently running 2 Moon, 1 FMage and 2 Negates) or taking another card good against midrange, specially Abzan (right now I have 3 AV, 1 Staticaster, 1 EE, 1 Anger, 2 Negates). I was thinking about one between Keranos, Jace AoT and Olivia, with a slight preference for the first and the latter one. What do you guys think? I'm on 20 lands, so reaching 5 isn't a problem most of the times.
Beat tron on a g3 countersquall yesterday. He overextended casting karn with a winning board. Having a hard time against BGx lately. YP did well yesterday and was surprisingly a fast threat. I am a big fan of clique however and still trying to incorporate him back.
I can vouch for pia and Kiran being great sideboard tech. I had two games last night where p and k were instrumental in winning. One in the mirror and the other against sultai midrange.
Hey fellow Grixis Delver players! I just published my Modern Competitive League playlist for my updated Grixis Delver list. Please don't hesitate to check it out here: Click Me! Also, if you're interested in last week's straight Grixis Delver list, Click Me!
Each match is against a different deck, so watching them all will help veteran and new players alike understand how good/bad the deck is against some of the decks in the current meta. If you liked it, please let me know here or on the videos so I can produce more of these Grixis videos for you, hopefully updating the deck as I go along to try to tune the deck!
Check out some Magic Gameplay and Commentary videos here, including Modern Grixis, Jeskai, and Esper videos as well as some Standard and Drafts too: My YouTube Channel!
Went 3-1 last night with my "bad" delver control build.
Beating tron, Jeskai control, Jeskai geist and losing to b/w taxes.
Congrats! Would you mind posting your updated deck list? I believe a page or so back you said you made some changes to it. I'm really interested in trying a Cryptic build like yours as I like the idea of a stronger late game.

Hahaha, I asked tailz this same question about a week ago. I'll get my list posted in a bit. Last week was my first FNM with his list that i made a few tweaks to and went 3-1 placing top 8 in a 26 man tournament.

Blue mage through and through... i know, i know, I'm hated.

What was your Tron game plan?
Thanks. It's fnm level but the build has been study getting paid out in store credit haha.
Tron SB plan is
-4 bolt, -2 fatal, -2 snare
+2 fulminator, +2 crumble, +1 countersquall, +3 vision
I like splitting the crumble and fmage for a lot of reasons. They run warping wail, kommand fmage is brutal, etc.. but crumble is pretty much 1 and done. A lot of people don't like crumble because of 4cmc, but the raw power of being able to 1 and done is something I want. Ancestral are for the fact, that we end up answering their threats 1for1. Early vision can lock up the game. Tron game plan is to slow down mana development as much as possible and beat with anything and everything. T2 snap if you feel like you wont get value from them until late. We run delvers though, so it's less likely to have to run snaps out like that. Tough matchup regardless. Oh yeah and I leave in terminates, to deal with that world breaker that slipped through the counters, although i'm not entirely sure this is correct..
What do you guys think of Blood moon over Fulminator mage on the SB?
P.S.: I'm currently running a desolate lighthouse on the SB and it has been great for me in the mirror, against jeskai and other midrange decks.

I've been in the process of testing and recording some games with the Grixis Delver Control build and I have to say I'm quite impressed. Its pretty solid in both the early game and the late game. I'll share my list when it comes closer to uploading the videos, but in my preliminary testing it feels much better than the "straight" Delver list as well as the Young Pyromancer Delver builds.

Siding AV in against Tron seems so unrealistic to me honestly, and I'd keep a single Snare for Sylvan Scrying as well.
Also, going down with Tasigurs is another thing I didn't understand.

I love blood moon, I've swapped 2 FMages with 2 Moons, leaving the third. Now I only have two doubts. The first is YP or no YP. I didn't like Clique at all (and I used to love two of them in my UR Twin build), the second is in the sideboard, since I don't know if I should keep my single SE or not since it didn't have accomplished much. On the other hand, I'd like to try Pia and Kiran.
Also, I've found AV much stronger than Lighthouse recently. A single casted AV puts you so much ahead, while Lighthouse is more of a much late game, forcing to pay 4 to loot.
Why unrealistic? It's been performing well. Games go long enough to resolve one. Plus, there's too many dead cards mb in my list. I went down a tas from the last build, to add a 22nd land. 3 delve fatties is still enough imo. I dropped SE completely. There's 2 regular goryo players at my shop, but I get by fine with hella counterspells. Also wanna try p and k with this build.. Seems great, and it was when I was running 20 land delver, but I think I already have enough grindy cards. Or is there certain matchups she shines in that I don't know about?

Great! still in the process of watching your last videos. Share some feedback on build changes when you got them, so I can argue why that sucks or actually make the changes lol.
For the people that like gameplay videos to be a surprise in terms of results, I'll post my thoughts and decklist in the spoilers below. But for anyone wondering, the deck performed splendidly. Stay tuned in the next couple days as I edit and upload the next playlist.
So, for those that want the WHOLE playlist to be spoiled, we went 5-0 in a Modern Competitive League with the following decklist:
So the deck felt really smooth, consistent, and effective against the decks I faced. We beat Mono-White D&T, Bant Knightfall, RW Sun&Moon Prison, Living End, and Mono-U Tron. I'll let you watch the videos that will be uploaded soon to see how exactly the games went. Some were close and required tight play, and others were not! If anyone has any questions about some of the deck choices, feel free to ask but I also go over the decklist in the deck tech video (which, again, will all be uploaded soon).

I'm super happy people are getting results with this build! The only difference I see mb is -1 tas, -1 cryptic, +1 fish, +1 clique.
Can't wait to see the videos. On the topic of creature choice.. I can't seem to ditch the angler. There have been waaaay too many games where tas and fish side by side was the difference instead of drawing a 2nd or 3rd tas. Could I convince you to split 2/1, or do you have a more compelling reason to run 3 tas and no fish?

Legacy: Merfolk U; Shadow UB; Eldrazi Stompy C
Pauper: Delver U
Vintage: Merfolk U
Primers:
Pia and Kiran Nalaar looked good in Kevin Jones' most recent video. Seems like it would be great with Kolaghan's Command.
UR ....... WUBR ........... WB ............. RGW ........ UBR ....... WUB .... BGU
Spells / Blink & Combo / Token Grind / Dino Tribal / Draw Cards / Zombies / Reanimate
Beating tron, Jeskai control, Jeskai geist and losing to b/w taxes.
but seriously. Taxes is rough with vial.
