Shambling Vent vs. Stirring Wildwood : one of these survive Bolt. i saw decklists with the new WB manland, but i guess they will witch back to Wildwood soon. or maybe we'll get a golgari manland in the next set.
Gideon and Elspeth: double white mana at the first place, high casting cost at the second place. i would like to see a Batterskull instead on a 5cmc slot. 6cmc is just not for this deck.
Hey thanks for the reply, but I wanted reasons as to why he included them, rather than reasons to NOT include the cards I listed. I also think Batterskull is just not good anymore because of Kolagan's command and I think this is the general consensus among the community.
@EricEMBrown I think you are a true master of this Junk deck. Can you please talk about the game plans and sideboard plans of this deck. The sideboard is very diversed and I can't figure out how to sideboard when reading your deck. Please. I want to play the exact 75 of your GP deck, but I can't without your references.
This undefeated day one list from GP Pitt looks pretty sweet.
The undefeated Abzan deck has 2 anti-burn cards in sideboard as Feed the Clan. So the pack is 2 finks and 2 feeds. Other decks have 3-4 lifegain. It is a normal meta call. Kitchen Finks is also good in Zoo and BGx matchups. But it is always got outpowered eventually.
A 3cc-3power threat is kinda lame in other matchups. It is slow when we are playing the aggro role and it can't pass defence when needed.
I wanted two cards for grindy matchups/mirror. The options are basically Bloodbaron/Baneslayer, BAtterskull, 2nd Gideon (or 4th Rhino), Painful Truths or a planeswalker. Ideally the card would be good against BGx, Grixis Variants, Twin (post board they ALWAYS grind) and Collected Company Zoo decks. The lifegain options are better against zoo, but not resilient enough vs BG, Grixis. So it came down to a planeswalker or second painful truths. Truths isn't very good vs Zoo and because of the reduced lifegain in my version drawing 2 can be a stress on your life total even in the control matchups (where I am keeping in thoughtseize and want to fetch shocks). The planeswalker I tried were Gideon, Sorin, Little Elspeth, Gideon New and Big Elspeth. Vs Path matchups (Junk, UWR, Zoo) big elspeth was just the best. Shes obviously the most powerful and you get pathed. Realistically Little Gideon/Elspeth might be better (sorin to fragile vs Bolt/Kcommand), but Big Elspeth is my pet card (won me a GP).
Gideon Jura over 4th Rhino. Worse vs Burn. Better vs Affinity/Infect, *****ty creature decks (like GW HAtebears). Neutral vs most other matchups. Gideon Overperformed by a lot. Note Brian Liu (who tested with me) was so impressed he played 2 in the GP in his zoo deck and got 16th. Gideon is a powerful, resilient anti small creature effect. in particular the matchups that hes good in are very close game 1, so I like having a very powerful card.

Our curves are virtually identical. Bolt becomes Path, Kolaghan's Command/Maelstrom Pulse becomes Lingering Souls, and then both lists run 4 drops.
If we flip Siege Rhino off of Bob, we are going to gain 3 when we cast him. Jund doesn't have that ability.
The other argument I hear is that Junk can't close the game out fast enough to take advantage of Bob. This makes even less sense to me as Bob is king in grindy matchups and helps any deck get ahead on board. Who cares if we can't close it out with bolts? Cast Lingering Souls once or twice and you are good to go against most decks.
The manager at my LGS has been running Bob in Junk (with 4x Rhinos and 4x Souls, no Tas) and he crushes with the list.
Anyway, just wanting to promote some discussion. I feel like a lot of the Tier 1 - 2 decks get into group think mode and won't try something new (or something obvious) unless Chapin or LSV top 8 with some innovation.
The big thing with bob is the junk mana base hurts us more than the jund one does. That's not to say bob can find a home in a style of junk. Just not the traditional. But just because it's not traditional doesn't mean it's bad or wrong
I just came back from FNM winning 3-0, finished second because only 3 rounds with 17 players. The shop is in a mall and they can't overextend 9pm so we never do more than 3 rounds. (2-1, 2-1, 2-0)
I am trying 2 courser because my meta is usually aggro. Tonight they didn't do much so I can't realy say if they are worth it or not so far. I don't like getting burned, aggroed to badly or miss land drops like I often do (not tonight though) so I thought Courser might help for those shortcomings.
First round (2-1)
Some kind of Jeskai combo deck with Ornithopter (1x) and Emrakul and Possibility Storm.
I basically had to be faster than him finding possibility and Ornithopter.
Game 1 : He combo's off cause he countered/killed some of my stuff, couldn't kill him fast enough.
Game 2 : I win with beats before he could find his combo. (he went through most of his deck, he needs to improve it)
Game 3 : I break his hand with Lili turn 3.
Second Round (2-1)
Collected company Sliver deck.
Game 1 : He has a pretty good curve and beats my face quite fast, I can't deal with his first strike/deathtouch slivers in time.
Game 2 : I just get every abrupt decay and win with Lingering Souls.
Game 3 : I get Rhino, Lili, Tasigur on board and remove all his board again.
Third Round (2-0)
Bant aggro with Knight of the Reliquary, Geist, Loxodon.
Game 1 : I win by grinding him out with lingering soul and ulting Lili giving him 1 pile consisting of Birds of Paradise, Hierarch+ lands and 1 pile with Geist and Loxodon x2. He was either going to have infinite mana but nothin in hand to play or 3 beaters that I would deal with in a few turns and no mana. (I had 2 rhino on board, some Lingering left) He chose to give up. I can beat 4/4 loxodon's with Rhino and chump the angel all I want if he does nothing else.
Game 2 : I get Inquisition, Thoughtseize, Thoughtseize then Lily on turn 5 and plenty of removals for the few threat he managed to top deck ... 3 discards in a row is kind of backbreaking.
I know my lands aren't the usual ones. I don't have any marsh flats but seriously, I never have problems doing what I want to with those fetches and Godless/Overgrown. Eventually Ill get 2 mars flats.
BTW my sideboard is kind of weird I am missing some things. Need to build it better ... Not sure if I want to concede the tron matchup to have better stuff for everything else or not. I would need fulminator mages I guess otherwise.

Hey guys! After a few months away from Abzan playing mono-green Stompy, I've decided to come back to the deck, as the format is too hostile for such a pure aggro deck to thrive. I previously played the Little Kid version of this deck, but I'm going to take the plunge and buy Lillies and Goyfs. Here's the list I'm planning on trying out:
What do I need to cut and add here? Including the mana base - I more or less worked with my existing mana base from the Little Kid variant, but I suspect there are some things that are out of balance with it.

How does everyone feel about people starting to exclude Siege rhino from the deck?
I think some (but not all) of the arguments are for loosing to combo and Siege generally not doing enough to affect a non-agro game state.
Siege is a lightning helix on a 4/5 trample body, no one can disagree that he is not amazing, but in the current meta, tapping out on turn four to play him and getting blown out by a counter spell is kind of not great, or having him eat any of the myriad removal after the huge investment is difficult to deal with.

I'm finding Restoration Angel to be successful...
But I've always thought Rhino is the worst card in the deck. Dark Confidants are fine as a replacement. However in the current meta being a little more aggressive, the 3 life gained from Siege Rhino is very relevant compared to possibly taking damage off of Bob.
Hello everyone, I am a newer player and have a couple questions about some sideboard options. I currently have 2x Aven Mindcensor and 2x Fulminator Mage against Tron and Bloom. The mages are staying for sure but Aven mindcensor has been a little underwhelming. I haven't tested the matchup much but is there a better an option against those decks? I also have 2x Stony Silence to bring in vs tron but tron hits from different angles that I wonder if there is a silver bullet that I am unaware of. Should I keep Mind censor? Swap it for something better vs. Tron/maybe bloom? Or just give up on that matchup since its terrible anyways and dedicate slots to other matchups?

If Ayli did what you said it did it would be possibly playable in my eyes. However it's "Sacrifice another creature".
Originally I was pretty pumped for the possibly of another realistic way to gain life in Junk, however she is most likely be a lightning rod in most match ups where you want her to be relevant in. Outside of burn, the matchup I would want her the most is against Zoo or Merfolk. Having a butt as well as being able to trade with things is sweet, though sacrificing your creatures to gain 5+ life in a non emergency just to start exiling creature I don't think is gonna be good enough to include in the mainboard. Leaving the creature back to block and using later for the beat down is going to be more relevant the majority of the time. In the mirror, I think she could be pretty great as a beater with Deathtouch with your opponent having to target her with removal first unless they want you gaining life. Sweet card, not exactly what we're looking for in most match ups.

i would say keep stony silence and keep fulminators, as they have use in other matchups as well. from my experience Amulet is nearly unbeatable, and about Tron, it depends how many Tron decks you meet. but i wouldn't play the Bird. you won't do wrong if you drop the Avens and add third Stony and third Fulminator.

So cutting the Mindcensors leaves me with 2 slots. I was thinking 1x Nihil Spellbomb and 1x Hallowed Moonlight. Both good against Living End, Grishoalbrand, and Moonlight can beat COCO. What are people's thoughts on the swap? Should I try this?
Edit: On second thought, adding a 3rd Fulminator Mage sounds pretty good vs. Tron and hitting the bounce lands vs. Bloom seems solid. So that leaves me with 1 more slot. Should I go for Spellbomb? Moonlight? Something else? Or should I keep 1 Mindcensor vs. Bloom?

What do I need to cut and add here? Including the mana base - I more or less worked with my existing mana base from the Little Kid variant, but I suspect there are some things that are out of balance with it.

I think some (but not all) of the arguments are for loosing to combo and Siege generally not doing enough to affect a non-agro game state.
Siege is a lightning helix on a 4/5 trample body, no one can disagree that he is not amazing, but in the current meta, tapping out on turn four to play him and getting blown out by a counter spell is kind of not great, or having him eat any of the myriad removal after the huge investment is difficult to deal with.
Thoughts?
I think a creature base that looked like this:
4x Dark Confidant
3x Scavenging Ooze
1x Kitchen Finks
1x Tasigur, the Golden Fang
Plus 4x Lingering Souls would be better in the current meta than Siege Rhino.
I'm finding Restoration Angel to be successful...
But I've always thought Rhino is the worst card in the deck. Dark Confidants are fine as a replacement. However in the current meta being a little more aggressive, the 3 life gained from Siege Rhino is very relevant compared to possibly taking damage off of Bob.

If Ayli did what you said it did it would be possibly playable in my eyes. However it's "Sacrifice another creature".
Originally I was pretty pumped for the possibly of another realistic way to gain life in Junk, however she is most likely be a lightning rod in most match ups where you want her to be relevant in. Outside of burn, the matchup I would want her the most is against Zoo or Merfolk. Having a butt as well as being able to trade with things is sweet, though sacrificing your creatures to gain 5+ life in a non emergency just to start exiling creature I don't think is gonna be good enough to include in the mainboard. Leaving the creature back to block and using later for the beat down is going to be more relevant the majority of the time. In the mirror, I think she could be pretty great as a beater with Deathtouch with your opponent having to target her with removal first unless they want you gaining life. Sweet card, not exactly what we're looking for in most match ups.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I will definitely cut the Mindcensor. My current sideboard is this

1 Damnation
1 Duress
1 Engineered Explosives
2 Fulminator Mage
2 Stony Silence
3 Timely Reinforcements
So cutting the Mindcensors leaves me with 2 slots. I was thinking 1x Nihil Spellbomb and 1x Hallowed Moonlight. Both good against Living End, Grishoalbrand, and Moonlight can beat COCO. What are people's thoughts on the swap? Should I try this?
Edit: On second thought, adding a 3rd Fulminator Mage sounds pretty good vs. Tron and hitting the bounce lands vs. Bloom seems solid. So that leaves me with 1 more slot. Should I go for Spellbomb? Moonlight? Something else? Or should I keep 1 Mindcensor vs. Bloom?
