Hey everyone!
After a bit of a slump with my regular lantern list, I ended up testing Thnkr's whir list yesterday at a local free modern event and it went great! The only changes were 1/1 split of needle and spyglass in the main, and I added a nihil spellbomb as a bullet. The 12 card package of stirrings, bauble, and whir definitely shrink your deck, so you always have a bridge. I know we have all lost due to not finding a bridge in a timely manner. Don't be afraid to whir for mill rocks as it is a super split card of anything you need. EE was fantastic! You can set it to 2,4,5 no problem. I was super surprised by how useful it was over a 2nd decay. If you are trying to do cute things, then this is not the deck for you. It is straightforward and consistent. I definitely believe this is the version I will run for the GP in CT in April.
I still feel like it is missing something. Most likely I might add a 61st card and make it a ruins or shredder.
Matches (sorry for the lack of details, when you play this deck for so long, the board state dictates your actions and most things become reflexive.)
R1-Abzan-He Mulled to 4 game 1 and didn't have much action g2
R2-Eldrazi d&t- torpor orb was great!
R3-Naya 1 drops- g1 I Spyglass a rampager and whir a bridge. I Misplay a my ruins t3 instead of a fastland. Doesn't cost me much
G2 I EE for 1 t3. I didn't see any Boros charms g1, so I wait to blow it up and it works out. Find bridge, game.
R4-Naya burn-
Gets lucky with 2 destructive revelry. G2 Still get it. He kept burn with no creatures.
R5-id with counters company. Play a game, but it was still super rough. Could use some help on this one. EE for 2 multiple times.
2-0'd everyone.
Deck is great! Sideboarding isn't too difficult. If you have any specific questions please ask!
Going to ask what might be an obvious question but does this deck die with a Mox Opal banning? Whether or not that's likely is up for debate but I'm considering getting into this deck and just wanted your opinions
Hey guys I’m coming back to modern after bit of a hiatus (hello Old School 93/94, yay! Will we make Field of Dreams & Millstone.dec a thing???) and am now looking to snipe down a fairly big local tourney with blue Lantern next week-end.
However i havent got the chance to face the new kid on the block just yet: Humans. How’s the match-up? Any tips? Thanks and cheers.

Humans is a pretty easy match up, at least for the Whir list. If you can deal with their Noble Hierarchs, they have no way to deal with a Bridge Game 1. And even if they name Bridge with a Meddling Mage, you can still use Whir to put a Bridge into play.
Post board I've found a singleton Torpor Orb in the sideboard just instantly wins you games since their only way to deal with your deck is essentially bringing in Vithian Renegades.
All in all I've found it to be a fair match up

I was afraid of humans, but since there's not really a company in their list, and we really only care about freebooter, meddling mage, and hierarch, it doesn't seem too bad. I was going to try to sneak a reckoning in the sb, but it might be premature. Video was good, but I'm going to test this matchup more.
Torpor orb does not stop meddling mage
If Thalia is out, you can cast EE for 1, pay 1 of a different color for Thalia, and it comes in with 2 counters (because of rules). This needs only 4 mana vice 5

Hi crexalbo I saw that strangemolars is playing the Bg version again in his videos. I think I personally like the Whir version. It feels really good to see two+ blue sources and a Whir in my opener
You're definitely not the only one. I see enough posts online asking about why they should switch from GB to Whir to know plenty of people are still on the list.
However, I am curious as to why you are still on the GB list. Don't get me wrong, both the Whir and GB lists are viable for tournament play. However I feel that the Whir list, through it's ability to have better access to a large variety of silver bullet artifacts is slightly better in quite a few match ups.
Obviously the trade off to make Whir work is losing your Ghost Quarters, which 100% makes this decks worst match up, Tron, even worse. However, I personally see the Tron match up as such a bad match up already, that I don't mind making it worse. To me making a 20/80 match up into a 10/90 match up is fine if you are making many more match ups closer to 50/50+

hey all, after taking a break from playing Lantern, by trying out different decks, planning on taking it to tournaments in the near future.
When I last used the deck, BGx was the go-to configuration but since then the Whir list has surged in popularity and preference. While I'm saving up to get the necessary pieces to try out the Whir list (waiting for Mishra's Bauble price to drop), I will rock the BGx list.
Trying to fix my list, I'm looking at crexalbo's and skitzafreaks BGx list to see any recent changes, but I was wondering if anybody has other BGx decklists that I can refer to? MTGTop8 has mostly the Whir list when looking at Lantern.

3-1 in my first outing with Whir-Lantern control. Man this deck is fun and engaging to play. Loss was to U/W control in a fun match of controlling the top decks and him getting down to like 10 cards with 3 cryptics left when I ran out of ways to stop his draws. Popped my last lantern to shuffle cryptic off the top (with ruins to bring it back next turn tho) and shuffled, cuts, draws cryptic, bounces bridge and wins. gg
Last match was brutal for my opponent. After me winning game one, he mulled to five, scry'd to the top and then played land go. I go land, shredder, mill Kataki off his library, then bauble, opal, thoughtseize.
My opponents varied in their salt levels but I had a blast. I've been a defender of Tron for years against claims that it's brainless....but compared to Lantern it is. It's a nice change and goes at the game from a completely new angle.

If I recall correctly, crexalbo was running a couple Welding Jar main before he was able to track down all his Mox Opal.
I don't have any of those cards in my side; he's constantly changing 1-3 of his sideboard slots just for grins I think. He beat someone down with Hazoret in his latest stream.
But basically search would come in against anyone not playing a deck that kills you on t3. the other cards just come in every time to throw your opponent off when they side out all their creature removal.

Here is the latest revision of my GB list. This is probably a LOT different from many builds, maybe even other GB builds, because I must use Cockatrice's meta for now. Also I am not settled on the deck at this point, idk what it is but something about it just feels weird.
I did run a Welding Jar in the main for a short time, but never as a replacement for Opal. If you need a budget Opal, I recommend just getting more lands, maybe Llanowar Wastes or something.
I love Kanister's off-the-wall sideboard tech, but personally prefer Mechanized Production as I always have

I've only played 8 matches with the deck so far and haven't yet felt the need for an alternate win condition. But I did lose a match where if it ended up going to G3 it would definitely be nice.
Last night's outing was 2-2. Beat robots and bant druid company. Lost to abazan druid company due to drawing 4 mox opals in my first 9 cards G1 and misplaying pithing needle both games. Say it with me, Qasali Pride Mage. Learning I am. Lost to burn 2-1 because I lost the die roll and didn't aggressively mull for a leyline G3.
MD 1 of grafdigger's cage is a mutha****in MVP. And LOL at whir making bridge CMC 6 to dodge spell queller.

Wow, and it looks like three of those top eight decks were GDS, all very difficult matchups. Very impressive. Would be awesome if we could get a tournament report on that!
Any tips for the storm matchup on a Whir build? Coming from a BG list and my shop is chock full of storm. I assume cage and witchbane orb are MVPs, but other thoughts?
