Hey guys, went to a GPT in NYC this weekend. Went 3-1-1 to ID into Top8, but I lost to the same Affinity deck in the quarters i lost to in round 2. I play the spoils version and i felt like a dog all 5 games we played (Round 2: 1-2, Quarterfinals: 0-2). I have recently taken out Hurkyl's Recall from the side because of Affinity's fall from grace. I put it to you all, is it time to put them back in? Looking at the metagame break down it seems it is still out in force and i may just be missing the match-up. Are there better SB cards that cover a larger range of matchups? The usual fogs don't seem to be hate enough. (Didn't help he always seemed to have Spell Pierce whenever i was trying to go off as well).
Top8
Sidenote: Had a fun time beating TWO other Ad Nauseam decks on the way to Top8 as well. One was an almost direct mirror with just some more spice in his SB ( Slaughter Games ??) and one had copied the list from the last GP winner. He seemed a little uneasy with the deck. One of the more thought provoking match-ups we have.
I think I will try the Peer/Teachings build out. Does trading speed for consistency drop you too many points against racing decks like Eldrazi or Tron?
Peer/Teachings is not slower than Spoils : it seems slower because of not having a reactive spell like Spoils that costs 1CMC, but it gives the turn 4 kill as much (and even more for me) than a Spoils build. The way to construct the board and sculpt your hand is methodical in another way with Peer/Teachings : I think you have to dig deeper and sequence the taplands and cantrips to make the best out of it.

Hey guys. Just got back from TCG States in Louisiana where I placed 2nd out of 60 with Ad Nauseam. To be completely fair, I definitely should have won but made one misplay in the finals vs infect, of all things, that costed me the match. That being said, our top 4 decided to split the cash so I feel like I was a bit more absent minded than usual. Played a variety of decks including Grixis Control, Jeskai Control, Bant Eldrazi, Kiki Chord, Merfolk, Death's Shadow Jund, Infect, BG Tron, and Goryo's Vengeance.
Decklist:
Lands
1 x Island
1 x Plains
4 x Gemstone Mine
4 x Seachrome Coast
4 x Temple of Deceit
1 x Temple of Enlightenment
1 x Dreadship Reef
4 x Darkslick Shores
Creatures
1 x Laboratory Maniac
4 x Simian Spirit Guide
Spells
3 x Pact of Negation
4 x Sleight of Hand
4 x Lotus Bloom
3 x Spoils of the Vault
1 x Lightning Storm
4 x Ad Nauseam
4 x Pentad Prism
4 x Phyrexian Unlife
4 x Serum Visions
4 x Angel's Grace
SB:
Sideboard
1 x Echoing Truth
1 x Boseiju, Who Shelters All
1 x Slaughter Pact
2 x Hurkyl's Recall
2 x Thoughtseize
4 x Leyline of Sanctity
1 x Painful Truths
3 x Darkness
The match ups felt pretty standard. I've piloted Ad Nauseam to a RPTQ top 8 finish before, so I'm relatively versatile with the deck. Over all, I feel like I played somewhat decent, aside from the finals punt. I used all of my sideboard cards except Hurkyl's Recall. I definitely expected more Affinity, but the tournament was mostly littered with Eldrazi variants. Each sideboard definitely carried it's weight, and I feel like I was very satisfied with the deck.
Hi everyone. I've been cramming some local Events in Melbourne recently and I've been quite happy with the deck. Im running a list very similar to Andrew browns from GP Indy fixing the mana base somewhat to allow for etheral haze in the side as recently I have come up against grishoal quite a lot. I wanted to gauge what thoughts are still surrounding the more "transformational" board I feel like it has really been quite good but from all that I see it is still not something that comes up very often. Also I know this isn't a selling forum but I'm looking at swapping my foiled ad naus deck for a regular deck plus value to help me break into legacy does anyone know of any good forums or ideas that could potentially help out ? These ones here in Aus haven't been much help to me cheers guys

Top8'd TCGPlayer NH states yesterday with a peer/teachings list. 3 peer, 1 teachings, only 2 pact of negation main. Small turnout, only 5 rounds.
R1: 2-0 vs naya eldritch evolution
G1 I blow him out t4. G2 I win through eidolon of rhetoric since I have unlife.
R2: 2-0 vs Affinity
G1 he plays a spellskite, but doesn't have a fast clock, I kill with lab maniac on turn 5. G2 I get an ad naus thoughtseized, but the only clock is an inkmoth. I transmute for slaughter pact to kill it and find another AN to go off.
R3: 0-2 vs eldrazi tron
G1 I suspend a lotus bloom, he plays chalice on 0, followed by back to back tks's. G2 plays out in much the same fashion.
R4: 2-0 vs skred
G1 I open with combo pieces, ramp, and my basic island. I win on t4. G2 I have my basic island again. I use SSG to power out unlife on t2 ahead of blood moon, and I win when a lotus bloom un-suspends a couple turns later.
R5: ID vs Storm.
I knew the guy was on storm, which I think is a good matchup. Probably should have played and aimed for a higher seed, but the way things worked out we could ID and end up 7th and 8th, so we did.
Quarterfinals: 1-2 vs affinity
Same guy as before. I get g1, mull to 5 and am a turn short g2, and he wins g3 with thoughtseize and a fast clock to my anemic 6 card hand.
Not bad. I have a habit of loosening up too much if I make top 8. Thought I kept it together pretty well here, but tight play isn't always good enough. I think I need a better plan in the eldrazi tron matchup.

There's not much transformational sideboard going on, but a few months ago, I posted three lists with transformational sideboards : one of my own with Unburial Rites, one from Joe Lam with Bring To Light and one from Devan Koepke with Colossus!
What'd you end up deciding with the gifts/rites board?
I've been meaning to take a gifts side to a tournament and still haven't gotten around to it.
It's doing good, taking the route of a reanimator deck. It's very unstable I must say, so I play it for fun, but it's very explosive : nobody understands what's going on. I don't think I've played enough with it to be sure how powerful it is, but it feels clunky sometimes to have two different combos in the same deck, but at the same time. It's mostly a fun take on the deck.
@ testing : I tried Byrd's list and it's a clinic in deck building for us. Desperate Ritual is so much value with Splice on Peer as well as being able to spend 2 SSG for speed ; it's even a good addition to bait counterspells when going off. I'm not sure I would take out 1 Pentad Prism for that (I'm more inclined toward taking out 1 SSG for 1 Ritual). Also, 3 Peer is utterly powerful : however, not having a second win condition mainboard is very glass cannon... The manabase is great with 7 temples and 3 fetches and I tested with Timely Reinforcements and the card is huge for gaining time. I've added the card to my sideboard in place of Patrician's Scorn.
Played Cheerios, Tron, Affinity, 5c Tribal Flames, and Burn in the Swiss. Affinity, Jund, then lost to Cheerios in the finals.
Some General Thoughts
- Cheerios is an unwinnable matchup, they combo faster and we don't have creature removal. Swan Song is a beating plus they bring in Leyline vs us.
- Really like the Dreadship Reef in the SB. Against Jund/Junk we take out Pentad Prism so having another mana source/ramp card is really nice.
- Ethereal Haze needs to be Darkness as there is a lot more black. Haze saved me a against Affinity as I chained 3 in a row to survive then topdecked Ad Nauseam to win.
- Painful Truths as great vs attrition matchups. I cast it T2 vs Jund off SSG to play around a discard spell.
- Cut Patricians Scorn at last second and didn't miss it. Truth/Maniac handle anything that Scorn did.
- Spoils was fine for me as it let me win some games, but other times it was just a dead card in my hand. Also a lot of games were grindy and a Teaching would have been nice. Still not sure which version is better but I'm going to try 3 Spoils/1 Teachings going forward and maybe move towards Peer.
I think that Spoils are much better on open metagame, especially in game 1. It's good to play 1 Teachings in side to swap Spoils with it against grindy match ups.
hey guys
i was planning to build an ad nauseam deck
but there is talks about spirit guide potentially banned
so, can this deck stays alive if spirit guide is banned and what is the possible replacement for it

People are talking about ssg ban since 2011 or eralier. one time it could become true and this deck is dead, but since then, nothing spezial will stop us.
Stick with Byrd's list : it's really good. No need for Spoils in there.
And about SSG getting the hammer, it's been 6 years of talk and nothing happened. And if something would happen, then I'd dedicate myself to find something has competitive as the version we play right now.

Was this the one at the geekery yesterday?
As an 8 Rack player, specifically a BW smallpox variant, how would you suggest that I combat Ad Nauseam? Also what SB cards look the best?
Thanks for the advice
