Long time valakut here. I'm starting to do some preparation for GP Toronto in fabruary. I just want some other opinions about the madkaap combo in the side : is 6 slots too much?Is ''only'' helping match ups like affinity, burn and the likes not enought to include this package? Curious to read your thoughts on that!
Hey everybody, sorry I kind of abandoned the primer for a while after wanting to do so much updating and only really doing some grammatical fixing here and there.
I just kinda stopped playing magic for a bit because school and life have been in the way. So, to the person asking if the primer is out of date, yes and no. The sideboard matchup sections are still mostly relevant to the decks they talk about. The big thing to remember is that to keep up to date it is most important to be thinking about what matchups you expect. Affinity never changes, so if you expect affinity, it is the same matchup it's always been.
And in regards to that picture earlier on the page, that is owned by the person who created it and sells it on T-Shirts. I could not put it in the primer without permission. However, I encourage you all to check out their work as it's pretty cool.
I'm not going to make any promises about updating the primer any time soon as I will continue to be busy for the foreseeable future and can't say for sure if I will actually regain a stronger interest in competitive magic again soon. with that being said, if anyone here has been playing the deck for a long time and has been posting not just on this website, but on this decks various threads for a while and would like to take over the primer, PM me and we can talk. I would like this primer to thrive but I'm not going to hand it off to some random user who hasn't been involved in the community for long and/or has barely posted much at all.
Things are calming down a bit for me, so if you're in a bind I can take the primer back and do some updates. I'm slowly getting back into playing, going to an event this weekend.
Finally back to playing the deck regularly again now that winter break is over and I'm back at university. Last night was a small local event, only 3 rounds. I'm an hour away from Indy so the majority of our regulars were there playing the GP. The list I ran is below!
Round 1: Dredge, Loss 1-2 Game 1: I play this matchup regularly since this particular guy is my roommate. Game 1 I didn't see enough removal and by the time I was able to Anger away his board he Conflagrateed me for lethal.
Game 2: Kept a risky opening hand with a single red source, some ramp, and a Relic. The risk paid off and I topdecked a green source after playing my turn 1 Relic and the rest of the game went pretty much accordingly. Scapeshift for 36 got me there pretty handily.
Game 3: Mulled to 6 and kept an okay hand with ramp and removal. Proceeded to draw lands all game and couldn't keep up with the tide of dudes. Sometimes Dredge just does what Dredge is supposed to do.
Round 2: Mono Black Good Stuff???, Win 2-0 Game 1: This guy is pretty regularly on either mono W humans or a Mono B deck. I'll be honest, I don't quite know what the Mono B deck is supposed to do. There's discard, and creatures, and Lashwrithe. I've heard he runs a devotion package, but I've never actually seen any devotion matters cards. Game 1 got a little bit sketchy as he landed a rather large Lashwrithe, but I managed to combo off the turn before he would have killed me with it.
Game 2: Similar to game 1, except he never really did much of anything. A few discard spells that presented him with nothing but poor decisions since I had a fair amount of redundancy this time around. Scapeshift closed the game out nicely.
Round 3: Mono Green Stompy, Loss 0-2 Game 1: He had protection/pump spells for all of my removal, and I wasn't able to get to a critical amount of lands before getting run over by big dudes.
How has Crumble been for you? And which shop do you play at, I’m about an hour from Indy also
The few times I've used them they've been fantastic. I've played against Eldrazi Tron a few times and (obviously) it has worked out well there. Same goes for Mono Blue Tron although its a little harder to resolve them. Most surprisingly, they've been fantastic against Ad Nauseam. I'm honestly not sure how we're supposed to beat the deck, but the times I've done it I've beaten them by cutting them off colors with Crumbles and artifact removal.
I play pretty much every Saturday at the Keep in Muncie since I'm a Ball State student. I could travel closer to Indy and play more often/in a bigger meta if I wanted but with it being my senior year and everything Saturdays are pretty much the only night I've got free.
I used to play it but more often than not the land I really wanted to hit against Eldrazi was the temple and by t4 that was already irrelevant. Vs Gx tron it’s a House because like 12 of their cards are dedicated to finding tron, makes it a house there.
I haven’t played at keep in Years, I drive from Yorktown to game time every Tuesday for Modern there

General spell distribution question: is 3 Prismatic Omen too many?
I personally cut the omens, they seems to be very good in certain odd case, but they seems pretty bad in a lot of other (note that I cut my hours too). I think I'll prefer a more stable deck in which when I need a land I can cast a farseek, not having a useless omens in my hand
2 Omens are the sweet spot. It feels bad to draw 2 Omens and you want enough to see it every other game. I've won too many games off natural landdrops with omen in play to consider removing them from my mainboard
But killing with 6 lands becomes impossible, and that’s relevant in the race MUs right??
My theory is that if you cast a ramp instead of omens, you'll get to the same spot at the same time (scapeshift for 7 land instead of 6+omens). Of course Primeval Titan get a little bit worse, but I usually get what I want from him (1-2 bolt triggers)
Where Omen shines are those games where you're going to go beyond turn 4. Omen's strength is turning your land drops into damage, so if you're in a drawn out game you can wittle away at your opponent's life total.
Of course it has plenty of other uses, but that is where it is strongest.
Crumble Ive been considering cutting. In the games where it is relevant (tron mostly) you almost win on the spot if you get it early enough. But the tron matchup is already good for us so im not all that sure its needed.
Omen I think is a 2 of. Going off on 6 lands and getting double bolts out of fetches is Really strong.

EDH BRGKresh the BloodbraidedBRG, A box of lands and ideas.
Modern: RG Titanshift. A deck made of cards too stupid for EDH.
Retired: Lots. More than I feel you should suffer through or I should type out.
Just my 2 cents. I used to run double crumble, but I found it either too slow (i.e. Turn 3 Karn has already come down) or irrelevant (I kill on turn 4). I just run Beast Within, which is more versatile. You can beast Karn, you can beast a tron land, in the mirror you can let them resolve scapeshift and beast a mountain for a blow out, half the time they don't expect it, you can beast random problematic nonsense like blood moon, LotV, runed halo, spreading seas, leylines, angler, colonnade, plating, a fat champion of the parish etc.
I'm definitely considering swapping my Crumbles to Beast Within. I don't get to use Crumble often enough and I can definitely see how BW is just more all-around useful.
