I bring it in vs spell combo decks like storm, titanshift, ad nuseam, things where they run alot of angers, like skred or scapeshift, it comes in vs any aggro deck where stripping a card is important like in burn or infect or sucide zoo
I'm about it take the jump into modern and pick up this deck. I've got some questions about some cards. Thanks in advance for any help.
Haunted Dead: Which matchups does this shine in? Right now I'm having trouble justifying it over a mainboard Collective Brutality. If I don't decide to mainboard it should I stick in the the SB?
Speaking of Brutality, opinions of it in MB vs SB seem to be all over the place. Some articles called I read called it the best thing since sliced bread and had 3 in the MB but most people in this thread seem to be running them SB (or not at all). I assume its a meta call? I scoped out my LGS this week and there was only 1 burn and 1 infect player. Guys there said their meta was mostly "fair"/slower decks.
I also saw a Merfolk player and Elves player. I can at least come up with some sort of plan on paper for other decks but I have no idea what I'd do against these two. Are large fish and creature-based combo a problem for this deck or are we just faster?
About Collective Brutality - I really like it against CoCo decks. We can kill a guy AND discard Collected Company/Chord/Evolution. In my opinion it's great value.

I actually missed that on my first head run through. Options seem pretty wide there. Brutality, decay, axe.
Bant Eldrazi really isn't a tough match-up. What is giving you trouble? As for Goblin Lore, there was literally no reason to run it over Tormenting Voice before mom hug. Now even less of one.
Earlier someone asked about Haunted Dead and I wanted to discuss it more. I find myself boarding out HD in almost every match besides Midrange and Affinity/Infect. I was thinking of replacing it with a MB Collective Brutality, which seems to have broader uses for game 1.
I dont really see any pros for being mono red really.
I like brutality a lot, but I like it sideboard. I Dont like things main deck that cant be cast from the yard, which is why even if I side huanted dead out often, it will get the nod.
Against affinity I do 2 grudge, 2 axe, and 1 gnaw. I have 1 darkblast, 2 conflag in the main anyways. I've had no problem with affinity after that, very in my favor. You just got to play tempo more than aggro. If you are killing all their good plays every turn, 2 bloodghasts are more than enough to win the game. If anyones not running at least 2 axe in the main, I think your missing out. Comes in against any creature matchup, and allows you to interact turn 1 while still playing dredgy. I usually side out haunted dead, as blocking doesnt really do much because they go wide, or go tall, but bounce around the damage, 2 neonate, 1 mom hug, 1 narc
Infect is a better choice for bruality, since killing a dude and stripping a pump is stupidly good against them. If they save it with a pump, thats also fine, because you just took out 2 cards from them so their not winning on turn 3 vs you. Plus it opens up the gates to conflag or darkblast it later. Against them I side in 2 axe, 3 conflag, and I shoe horn in one grudge as a safety measure against inkmoths. I keep in haunted dead, because she can single handedly win that game. I usually side out 3 mom hugs, 2 neonate, and a ghast for that matchup.
2 Axe in the main? I really don't like running any main. There are matchups where they are dead, they are dead in the yard, and Conflagrate is just as good if not better.

I said I "do" 2 axes, in response to the "what do you sideboard in." I don't run axes in the main. I have run axes in the main. You can, and should, do stuff like that if you need to on metas that are like all creatures. Currently, its not worth it to do so.
Going monored seems like we pigeon hole ourselves to playing a certain way. No life from the loam means your conflagrates are pretty mediocre. We also limit our sideboard choices, as black gives us a whole lot. And i like hardcasting stoner imps and GGT when i need them. Which of course are undoable with just 2 red mana.
However, for the benefit of the doubt, try it and let the swarm know how it pans out for you
How important is having 4 ghasts?I have one and am having trouble getting the last three.I find it every game and I'm only running a single dark blast.
I run the bridge version with 3 gargadon and 3 bridge.
With reunion conflages are good, does it still need loam or can we trade for voice to allow more dredge or draw for SB cards.
Loving the deck as I'm learning to play it better. Still have issues with knowing when to mulligan and SB cards I need more practice with.
4 ghasts is vital. If you're not running 4 ghast, 4 narcomoeba, 4 Prized Amalgam, you're not playing dredge. You can sideboard out ghasts and stuff, but your maindeck 60 should absolutely have 4 ghast, 4 Narco, 4 Amalgam, 4 Neonate, 4 Looting, 4 mom Hug, 4 Grave Troll, 4 Imp. The rest are dependent on your build and whatnot
Versatility is one of the things that makes dredge good, it can change it's approach if needed.
With a monored deck. You will have only one gameplan.
- You won't have lategame power. If your first waves don't deal with the opponent, you're most likely going to lose.
- Conflagrate is a lot underpowered, since the deck lacks pure card draw (you even go down cards with looting and neonate). So you will rarely conflag for more than 4 (unless you're holding cards, wich makes your development slower), while with loam, 8-10 conflags aren't unrealistic.
- Your sideboard becomes worse. Specially vs. faster combos due to lack of discard and darkblasts for infect.
- You're struck with the lands you open, wich makes harder to hit land drops every turn.(Relevant to hardcast Trolls)
- You mulligan more, specially post board where you need to access green mana.
- Your game vs. hate is a lot worse. It's not uncommon for people to keep bad hands just because they got the hate, and you can win even by hardcasting your creatures.
There are two main problems with Scrapheap Scrounger in dredge.
The first is that there aren't that many creatures you can afford to exile. You are pretty much limited to Neonates and Narcoamebas, and after you've brought back Scrounger a couple times, the amount of exile fodder is going to dwindle. Not to mention it's counter-productive with Gnaw to the Bone and a hardcast Grave-Troll.
The second problem is that despite being able to be recurred at instant speed, it can't block. Haunted Dead can (or more specifically, the Spirit token can).
It is also my only game against ad nauseaum and scapeshift as i do not run thoughtseize...

Bant drazi is very bad for me. I STILL havent won against it.
Granted i only played against it once since we started hugging mom.

It depends on what the rest of your hand looks like but I think it's generally accepted that T1 looting is the more consistently strong play
