A few weeks ago after reading this thread on modern dredge. I've transformed my legacy into a modern. Is anyone having any luck running the gargadon-bridges builds with the "mom-hugs"? Very similar to the fkz builds in legacy. These modern games are a bit more grindy. Please keep posting play by plays guys! I love to read your tactics with siding games 2 and 3. Especially with established decks still evolving. Hooked on rally the peasants right now. Those extra hits just too hard to pass up.
So I haven't had a chance to play modern at all since Kal was introduced, despite being like a kid on Christmas morning about Mom Hug and getting my foil playset in anticipation.
@Lantern, can you post your current list with the Rally the Peasants change that you ran at the GP. I've found that my lists are normally fairly in sync with yours so I can get up and running sooner.
@iostream, Is it possible to see your data that concluded that more enablers is better than more lands? I'm curious on where the balance point is and if Mom Hug has changed that balance significantly in your testing (I imagine with your strong focus on 1 drops it'd be a marginal difference, but I'm still curious)
Bogs might be better. They cost a turn tho (dredge loam then play, where they cost only a mana. Grinder longer games bog is better, shorter need them games journy is.
So basically the extra draw of Mum Hug has you comfortable in shedding a copy of Conf&Lftl for utility cards.
I think I'll need to grab a copy of Rally the Peasants. I never tested them before, preferring to trust in consistency but the US PPTQ reports have me thinking that perhaps I've gone too conservative at the cost of explosiveness.

Thanks.
WEll Rally is basically conflag copy 3. It just does a different angle of winning the game. They both have their pros and cons. Conflag get around 8 damage tops, rally can get in for 12 tops. Conflag can be shut down by random sided in cards like forge tender, but rally doesnt. You can use rally after a conflag to buy time for loaming into a second one. Its also instant, so you can play around with that. On the flip end it doesnt kill ooze or aggro creatures, it doesnt do that well against a bridge, or a crap ton of blockers.
They both have pros and cons, but both do their job at ending the game. I just think its better to diversify, helps stuff like extraction. Recently I lost to lantern because I got my conflags extracted. this would give me the last bit of damage.

I had never thought of it this way. Ok I'm definitely giving it a shot now
Took down a PPTQ today. Decklist felt great, wouldn't change a thing if you're not expecting to play the mirror. Mana confluence is give or take, but I have liked it so far. Shaving a loam has felt very good, less confident about shaving a Conflagrate. Unlike Loam, there's some games where you want access to every Conflagrate you can get. Perhaps if there was a card that I wanted in my MD bad enough I could see trimming it to 2, but there hasn't been one yet.
Hey everyone. I've been toying around with the manabase and I'd like to get some opinions (based off of Lantern's list). I want all my lands to produce R on T1, and Blood Moon doesn't even do that much against us so I want to cut Forest. Steam Vents has always sucked for me as well, it's only been relevant once in 50-60 matches. Jow would cutting the Vents and Forest for 1 more fetch and a Blackcleave Cliffs look?
Also, what is the consensus on GY hate? I'm stuck between Leyline and Bog right now.

The forest is not there for the blood moon, it is there for less pain. And the steam vents, it's exeactly for those uncommon matches where you will be forced to cast narcomoebas. It is also relevant if you're running memory's journey.
There is no consensus on GY hate. In my case I wouldn't use leyline as it requires too many slots since it is basically dead if you don't open with it. Between Leyline and Bog, I would go bog.
Bogs might be better. They cost a turn tho (dredge loam then play, where they cost only a mana. Grinder longer games bog is better, shorter need them games journy is.
Is there a reason for the switch to 21 lands? Does mom hug make more lands better, because I don't see how. I'm running an identical list but with 20 lands and a lightning axe.
Because there was too many games Id die because I had 2 lands and thats it. There are games you wanna hit land drops every time. 1 land= enablers. 2 lands= enablers/loam/conflag. 3 lands= flashback of looting and rally and casting stinkweed. 4 lands= reload on loam and playing the second conflag. 5/6 lands= grave troll.
Theres still a curve there. Being stuck on 2 lands on turn 3 sometimes means you miss the curve when its important, and you'll have to turn 3 loam instead, dropping a useless land. Just being able to have 2-3 lands in hand every game is really important. I felt the missing land drop more than I perfered, so Id rather not risk it. I dont want losing to my own mulls to be a thing.
Hi all! I'm getting back into dredge, but I'm not really up to date with deckbuilding theory. What lists are currently considered optimal? I 5-0'd my local modern event with this list, which I ripped off the web and added cathartic reunions to (two of these matches were living end though):
1. Basically, what do I take out for 2 more mom hugs?
2. Also, my sideboard is tuned to my particular meta (low amount of aggro players), but generally is there a more standard base?
3. Also, I notice olderish lists have 5 color lands and bridge from belows, were those better against certain things, or were they just suboptimal?
Played a 5 rounder today at the gp. Heres the report. Same decklist:
Round 1 vs Mardu
He had a pretty slow grindy start, so I just did the dredge and won. Key note, I held a land when he was at 8, with 4 ghasts in the yard to dodge the anger of the gods.
This was clearly a brew, so I didnt really know what to side. I ended up siding thoughtseize and brutality with a decay for maybe some form of grave hate.
Game 2 went slower, but look, if hes nothing but removal. I'll take all the time in the world to conflag him to death, seems fine with me. I basically untapped until turn 6 loaming, and conflaged him for 10, after beating him in with 2 narcs.
1-0
Round 2 vs Junk
I got in with neonate dredge troll, looting to dredge more, then hugged mom for more dredge. He oozed on turn 3, but that was far too late to stop that. I had out the whole team by then.
Sided in axes and decays and a brutality
Slow hand... but he mulls and doesnt have early grave hate. Hits an ooze turn 3, but I manage to mill a conflag out and kill it. This gives me an opening and Im starting to run away with the game, bringing back the team with a flash backed faithless. He scoops very grumpy after this. Seems fine with me. He starts talking about how Mom hug is the dumbest thing ever and needs to be banned. And I'm laughing because mom hug looks impressive, but lord knows the broken part of our deck is faithless looting.
2-0
Round 3 vs Affinity
I mull to 4 off no lands. Crap. See affinity and concede so I can side and he cant.
Side in grudges and axes.
Its going to be an easy game 2 with hugging my mom and hitting 2 grudges a conflag and darkblast. He plays out the game, but there is no way for him to win.
Game 3 he risks putting out a bunch of dudes with a Glimmervoid, which I can, and do turn 2 conflag them all away leaving him with no lands. He concedes. It was super risky. Still, me conceding early there kept my game 1 in game 2, which diff let me get this round easier than not.
3-0
Round 4 vs RDW
I lose game 1, hes just a turn faster than me, even with mana flooding.
Sided in 2 brutality and 1 gnaw. I cathatic right away into 2 trolls and a imp. Then a troll on turn 3 hits me a gnaw. I gain 12 right then and there, while he has no board while bringing back 2 ghasts and a amalagmate, so I win easy from there.
Game 3
I get a hand with a brutality in it, and it saves me enough damage to skip last til he's out of gas, hit the gnaw and win.
4-0
Round 5 vs Thing in Ice Ascension
Guy wants to split. I tell him I'm totally not playing for prize packs, I'm playing to play. Seriously I dont care about losing 5 packs, that all have bulk rares in em. I made my fee back anyways.
I see a steam vents and a visions and I'm a happy camper. Good luck blue player. He drops to 14 on probes too. I open with a lack luster mom hug, but I still dug deep, and hit my 3rd land off it. He probes to 10... kinda crazy, but hey, I wont complain for hasted bloodghasts. He plays a thing in ice (misplay, Id have conceded. Now I know what to side in.) then dies to bloodghasts and rally.
sided in Axes, decays, and thought seize
Game 2 I'm a little ackward on enablers dredge and he has a turn 2 ice, turn 3 anger. I end up topping a turn 3 axe since I cant dredge and kill off the thing. hes got one card in hand and an ascension. He angers again, which blows, but hes more or less out of steam. I dredge more, still hit creatures, and start to threaten leathal with loam conflag, and even have troll ready. He gets his ascension activated. He goes all in... for some reason? Looking to grape shot me? Maybe thing in ice? I dunno. but it makes him fetch hard and probe for free, dropping him to 9, while I have out a 3/3 and a 1/1 and 4 cards in hand, including loam. He puts a thing in ice out and passes. I dredge the second loam. Loam for a forest and 2 lands (7 in hand) drop the forest(6), getting my last ghast, swing all in. He blocks the 3/3 dropping to 6. I loam again (7 in hand was short a land), conflag for 1 on ice, because why not, and 6 to him.
5-0
Overall Impressions
Glad I went to 21 lands, there has been alot of times I want a 3rd land drop on turn 2, without forcing myself to loam. Id rather Hug Mom over loaming anyday. The main felt super solid. The rally was never bad, but gave me a turn 3 win once against someone in practice today. Its still conflag copy 3, but I like the options it gives over the 3rd conflag. I seem to find the conflags easy enough now with Mom Hug.
RDW matchup felt tight... I might want to get rid of something for a 3rd brutality. I think 1 of gnaw is still the correct number. You wanna cast it turn 3/4, but only after you dump ALOT so you'll probably see it anyways. Its only ever really good in rdw. I migggghhhhhttt drop the 2nd seize for it? Or the explosives. I dunno. Probably would like help on the side. the 1 gnaw, 2 axe, 3 grudge, 2 decay gave been super solid and aint going no where. 2 journey could be bogs, both are good, and the explosives, collective and thoughtsieze are completely flexable.
Went 4-0-1 the other day at my local FNM. Felt great lol. That was the first time I won my FNM with the deck, after running it twice. Anyway, here is the review of each matchup.
Round 1 vs MARDU Nahiri
Game 1 was a pretty slow dredging but I got there and was able to conflagrate his lingering souls and kill his nahiri leaving him with nothing. Round two was pretty slow too, but he was able to emrakul me, even after getting angered. I stayed alive for another turn or two but he got it with his souls. Game three started off with extra turns lol, but the hands we kept, I would've won for sure.
Record 0-0-1
Round 2 vs Grixis Delver
I knew I was going against some form of grixis, knowing I had the advantage. So game one he just kept delaying the inevitable, bolting and terminating my bloodghast and amalgams. Pretty soon he had no cards in hand and was facing down a whole team of them and a conflagrate in my graveyard, I win. Game two I was expecting anger, I see red in a deck and I know its anger so I play more conservatively. he ended up casting an anger and soon after rakdos charmed me, it was tough but I was able to save my haunted dead. He killed it and I kept going back making tokens, which in turn allowed me to discard and dredge. He soon ran out of resources and was facing the few creatures I had left, I take the win.
Record 1-0-1
Round 3 vs Infect
I went into the tournament thinking the meta was going to be small agro decks so My only kill spell, aside from conflagrate was darkblast, and it was the right decision. theres not much to say from this match aside that darkblast pulled its weight and narcomoebas kept landing from every time I dredged, letting me block inkmoths, forcing his pump spells. he never drew a distortion strike or landed a pendlehaven so the game was a 2-0.
Record 2-0-1
Round 4 vs Grixis delver
Game one was ridiculous. I was on the play and I had like 15 power on turn two because of cathartic reunion. That card is ridiculous. however I only run two of them. He sees the board state and instantly scoops lol. Game two he boarded in magma spray and surgical extractions (he showed them to me after the match). However, he still couldn't handle it and was run over.
Round 5 vs Jeskai Nahiri
this is where things got me a little upset. The jeskai nahiri was 4-0 while I was 3-0-1 and he asked for the draw. I didn't want to since that guaranteed him first and that placed me third. I told him to talk to the owner about it and he told him to play it out because of proper etiquette. This player is also from another shop so I can see that he was wanting the win just for bragging rights. So in a way I was competing for the store's honor haha. It also got me thinking that maybe he wasn't prepared for this match and oh boy, he wasn't lol.
Game 1 I was able to turn for him with conflgrate and a bunch of dudes. Game 2 is where I was really nervous because I was waiting for the rest in piece. He took a mull since I'm sure he didn't see a single sideboard card. He thought long about the six and decided to keep. I ended up committing too much to the board and he angered me. the angered took two of my bloodghast, two of my amalgams and two of my narcomoebas. however, I had the haunted dead in the graveyard and brought it back, discarding some dredgers. for a couple of turns I was able to ping in for one with my spirit and then he ended up being able to use his colonnade. so his clock was faster. But there was a ghost quarter in my graveyard (sideboard tech) . dredge life, got back ghost quarters and started popping his lands. at the end I was able to win with a haunted dead, amalgam, and conflagrate. it was such a sweet victory.
Record 4-0-1
This deck is so good with cathartic reunion and it treated me so well on Friday. I was able to go first that night, even after thinking that i wasn't going to be able to do it. I have two other modern decks but I really enjoy dredge, its just so good.
if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Honestly, the all star was Haunted Dead, Cathartic Reunion, and conflagrate. In that order lol. Haunted dead kept me in the game long enough to take over, its an underrated card that I didn't think was all that great until I fit it in my main for last Friday. Reunion because I was actually able to dredge the 18 (living the dream) lol. and conflagrate because its that good. If I had a fourth option itd be ghost quarter. I highly recommend this at least as a one of in the sideboard (I ran two). Haunted Dead and ghost quarter put in work in the last round against jeskai.

Great minds think alike! Howd your gp go?

Just being able to have 2-3 lands in hand every game is really important. I felt the missing land drop more than I perfered, so Id rather not risk it. I dont want losing to my own mulls to be a thing.

This deck is so good with cathartic reunion and it treated me so well on Friday. I was able to go first that night, even after thinking that i wasn't going to be able to do it. I have two other modern decks but I really enjoy dredge, its just so good.
if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Modern: Affinity, Mono-White Hatebears.
Legacy: Death and Taxes, Mono Red Sneak Attack, Dragon Stompy.
Modern: Affinity, Mono-White Hatebears.
Legacy: Death and Taxes, Mono Red Sneak Attack, Dragon Stompy.
Funny thing happened today, i made someone rage and tell me "fck you for playing a degenerate soon to be banned deck. Drawing 6 a turn ar least is fcked up."
I just looked at him and laughed.
He was playing goryos. ROFL.
