Round 1. UR Through the breach.
Reall nOt much to tell. Main deck blood moon got me game 1.
Game 2: EoT thtough the breach on my turn=Remand on my deflecting palm
In: 2 palm, 3 Relic, 1 Lavamancer
Out: 4 Searing blaze, 1 boros charm
He ran snaps, but overall searing blaze vs Emrakul or Grislebrand seems bad. I contemplated revelry, but half the players I talk to take Blood Moon out vs Burn. And if they keep it, being screwed out of playing 2 colors seems worse than being screwed out of 1.
Round 2: GW Elves with Vizier Druid combo
Game 1: T2 Eidolon got me going, but coco, untap infinite mana was brutal.
Game 2: Had to kill a couple of his guys,
But iltimately managed to unload 12 damage between his EoT and my tun.
In: 3 Path, 1 Lavamancer. Out: 4 Boros Charm.
Game 3: awkard land draws did me in. He played a druid and I drew an inspiring vantage to get lndfall for searing blaze at sorcery speed. He coco'd into the elf lord and a second druid. He played Vizier and made infinite mana. Elves are hard.
Out: 4 Eidolon. In: Put the 4 Boros charms back in.
Round 3: Mono Red Goblins. We raced, and I had more interactiob. Eidolon tore him up game 1.
Game 2 actully got close. I had to bolt a 1/1 bushwhacker to stay above 5.
In: 4 Revelry, 2 Path, 2 Firewalker
Out: 4 Eidolon, 4 Boros charm
Round 4: Counters Company:
Game 1: he beat me down with dudes. I ran out of burn. Boring and simple.
In: 3 Path, 3 Relic, 1 Lavamancer
Out: 4 Boros Charm, 3 Lava spike
Game 2: he gets a very slow start. Plays a druid on turn 2,y only kill spell is a rift bolt whcih I cast for 3.
Hand was ripe with burn to finish him.
In: 3 Lava spike, 1 boros charm,
out: 4 Eidolons
Lots of combo pieces to eat up my burn spells and paths.
Ultimately the key moment came down tk he had a Kitchen finks and a Vizier vs my swiftspear. I had a Relic up and 4 labds. I had Path and Helix in hand.
He had 1 card in hand. He blocks with Finks as expected. I path Vizier and Helix him, crack relic in response to persist, and he shows me 3 lands after he draws for his turn.
Round 5:uW control
I wrote the other day how this was beatable, and there are matches we can win. But Gideon of the Trials is a ginormous pain.
I lost 0-2.
I brought in Relic to keep him off snapcasters and 2 Revelry for Spreading seas/Leyline. Killed a letline, got wrekt by seas.
It's probably stronger against Naya than Boros, but I wouldn't say it's bad against Boros. Blood Moon effectively makes 8 cards in the deck dead, and sometimes that can be a significant fraction of a Burn player's current hand.
Glad to hear the deck did well enough for you. If you notice, the losses came from decks that messed with your lands (DNT, Ponza). Merfolk is rough for us as well. I think this would be true regardless of which version of Burn you run. I'm especially glad to hear that you went 2-0 against Boros Burn, as that's the obvious deck I lose percentage points against with my build.
I also brought it to my LGS on Monday and went 3-1, but all of my matchups happened to be aggressive (Affinity, Jeskai Midrange, and Merfolk x2, one of which I lost to), so I boarded out the black every chance I got. Nothing to really report, although I did win every game pre-board game I played except my round one with Affinity.
2-2
Round 1: infect (2-0)
Game 1: outraced turn 4, he had infect out on turn 3 so I'm guessing a bad hand?
Game 2: can't remember much here but I outraced again. Very impressed with the goldfishing
Round 2: UW thopter foundry (0-2)
Game 1: turn 4 kill
Game 2: he sideboarded in counters for 2cmc spells, and I ran out of gas by turn 4 before he stabilize with lifegain. 1x kor firewalker out with no paths from me to respond.\
Game 3: turn 3 2x kor firewalkers and no paths mean I was dead in the water. Did not have enough black spells to go down before lifegainers came in.
Round 3: mono green stompy (2-0)
Game 1: super close game, was brought down to 1 after all 2x gonti's and 1 helix to point to the ground. He was on 6 I had 2 lands 2 1x charm 1x bolt and needed a land but drew bump
Game 2: Scary game, but he only had 2 lands so none of the 3cmc monsters that the guide revealed could be played. Meanwhile the 2CMC 3/3 got pumped quite a bit with rancor but had a helix in hand to point to the ground thereafter 4 lands 3 threats later it was game next turn
Round 4: Affinity (0-2)
Game 1: he assembled his lifegainer really quick by turn 3 and because this build has 4 less point to the ground threats (searing blaze) I could not remove threats in time
Game 2: 15 cards got sided in: 4x skull crack, 4x searing blaze, 3x path, 1x rakdos charm, 3x wear // tear. Out: 8x black cards, 4x lava spike, 3x boros charm. Despite eidolon on board and skullcracking my way through with it and 2 subsequent swiftspears I still lost due to a misplay, but recalling the game later tonight I realized that even if I didn't misplay I still would not be able to stop an etched champion with an acrbound ravager coming in.
Mardu burn is really fun. I think I'll stop when I get less than 50% wins.
For future reference, I would side out Eidolons against Affinity, and keep in the Lava Spikes and Boros Charms. I would side out the black cards and Eidolons, side in the Blazes, the Wear//Tears, the Paths, and a single Skullcrack to hit 60.

I think Skullcrack should be at 4 against affinity, stops the lifelink & occasionally allows you to kill a blocking etched champion

"What's your plan?" Gideon asked.
"Are you serious?" Chandra replied.
RE: Bloodmoon:
It's a mixed bag. If you dont draw several RW spells, it won't matter. But Turn 3 when you've got 2-3 Helix or Boros charm is backbreaking.
RE: Affinity: Skullcrack is great.
I never leep Eidolon in vs them. On the play:
I typically bring in 4 Revelry, 2 Deflecting palm, 2-3 Path/lavamancer.
Boros charm goes first, Lava Spike next.
If you're playing against a suspected Blood Moon, you should try to mitigate the risk by prioritizing your splash color spells ahead of seeing Blood Moon. This might mean t2 charm instead of eidolon or something. Of course there's nothing you can do if you have a lot of splash color stuff in hand or you draw into it.
There will be a change in how Blood Moon works with the release of Iconic Masters.
If a nonbasic land has an ability that applies "as [this land] enters the battlefield" or that causes it to enter the battlefield tapped or with counters, the land will lose that ability before it applies. This is a change from previous rules.
This means that if you're under Blood Moon and you play Sacred Foundry, it enters untapped and you do not have to pay 2 life for it. It makes sense, because it's a Mountain named Sacred Foundry and Mountains don't require you to pay 2 life for them to enter untapped.
Well there are new players in this forum and while you didn't suggest it be in the main, you gave a couple of examples in which it is good. All I did was confirm for newbies it is only for an established meta not something to bring to a tournament. Sometimes people take ideas and run too far with them lol!
As an actual new player to burn that lurks in this thread, I can definitely appreciate this line of thinking and I thank you for it.
P.S: I play 2 Atarka's SB because of lifegain in my meta, but if I could play something else that would help against UW, please let me know
I play against UW A-LOT online.
I find that if they have those back-to-back T2-T3 Spreading Seas hands or 2 or more Gideon with counter back-up the MU is unwinnable. Thus I suggest racing with everything during T1-3 (beside Boros Charm since you need it for Gideon...) and then stock piling burn so that you can fight the counter war (while hoping they don't draw enough Seas, Gideons and LD effects to limit your off-load).
I don't see any situation where I'd ever side out Goblin Guide, especially in the mirror. The player who plays and sticks creatures and racks up the most recurring damage is likely the one who wins.
I agree, I recall arguing with Loïc Le Briand on reddit about this.
Its funny since he agrees that killing creatures is really important in the mirror and then follow up by suggesting that we should be boarding out those very same creatures (how can you recognize the threat but not see the power?).

That's just backwards. Perhaps it's a consequence of his all-in on Shrine game plan where he just aims to ignore his opponent's life total and bolt their creatures all day until he can crack Shrine for a lot? I think is a terrible strategy, but that's the only way that Shrine of Burning Rage can find a spot in the deck. It just doesn't make sense to acknowledge that the key to the matchup is creatures and then side out your best 1 drop creatures. He's able to recognize problems and weaknesses, but his solutions for them seem like they are the opposite of what he should be doing.
Patrick Chapin and Michael Flores talked about the Loic's deck on Top Level Podcast a few weeks ago. They discuss Shrine early (neither like it, and that's putting it lightly), go off on a tangent about Storm and Jeskai Tempo, and then return about halfway through the podcast to talking about the BGx decks that Loic ran into in the last 2 rounds. The semi-finals matchup was very light on lifegain, which makes the matchup much easier. They also discuss Titanshift some. The discussion of other Modern decks is useful in general because it's some insight into how those decks run. http://www.toplevelpodcast.com/shrine-of-burning-rage/
so ive been following through the thread since modern started and was talkative in this thread towards the beginning but since have traded my guides and am about to buy some more. i was wondering if we have a place or if someone has the list of some of the more important articles on burn. i know sullivan had on but im looking to read a few and rly hit burn hard again, not just in modern but in legacy too.
There is a new Burn primer! The link can be found by clicking here. As such, this thread has been locked and archived. It is still readable but if you want to post please do so in the new thread.
