rsge wasn't talking about something they are trying, but rather criticizing me solely because I used a word they don't like in stating to someone else why I think that a certain card isn't worth trying. Furthermore, I don't understand how detailing why a card isn't worth trying isn't a valid response to someone asking whether a card is worth trying. If someone asks whether a card is worth trying, and only wants to be told "yes, it is", there's no value in asking the question in the first place.
As far as carrying a deck list around just in case some sore loser tries to call you a cheater, I'm not really in favor of telling new players to be paranoid about sore losers or to suggest that carrying a deck list to an FNM is something you're ever required to do. FNM doesn't require deck lists, end of story. The most that any FNM judge will ever do is ask to go through your deck and make sure you adhere to the 4 card limit for everything but basic lands, and a deck list doesn't help you there.
In general, situations like what grp7 described do not happen often. When they do happen, the belligerent player is the one who needs to have a chat with the judge about statistics and good sportsmanship, because it's not acceptable to get upset that you lost and then accuse your opponent of cheating because an improbable but completely possible outcome happened. The belligerent player in that situation probably also is belligerent towards others and that's a problem that needs to be corrected, and it's only getting corrected if a judge/TO talks to them and explains that their behavior is a problem. It's not a situation that any player should feel obligated to protect themselves from by carrying a deck list around with them, so I don't agree with instilling fear and paranoia in new players by telling them to carry a deck list at all times.
Since it's regular REL, the punishment for not conforming to the deck list you pull out of your pocket at the end of round 3 would be nothing, therefore there's no reason to even have one. Tournaments that require deck lists are operated at a higher REL than those that don't. Those that require them will make you fill one out (or print it the night before) and turn it in at the beginning of the event.
respect people opinion
Opinions don't deserve respect. People do. I haven't said a thing that was disrespectful to anyone. I've defended a statement I made when someone more or less attacked me for making it and I've detailed why new players don't need to carry deck lists. There's nothing disrespectful about either of those things.
I aint mad at what you said, I agree the situations are far less common but playing in stores/play groups across 4 states and multiple cities there is always an anti Burn/Burn hater. Im not/wasnt trying to instill paranoia its sharing an experience just like when someone runs into a cheater.

I appreciate the sentiment and understand your feeling. Some people come off more harsh then others but that doesnt mean disrespect. However, there are enough people on forums who are know it alls/trolls, if you dont like someones post block them. I have block a couple off those already. I do not believe E1985 is that way seeing him on here for a few years, I havent seen all his content but from what Ive read he doesnt come off disrespectful.
I would never want this forum to turn into all out war like Ive seen on other sites, debating and disagreeing is always welcome. I enjoy reading/listening to different opinions, techniques, strategies, etc. I got better at Burn because Ive seen interesting ideas and tips that I never knew/thought of. Magic Downunder videos is just 1 example.
In that sense, I definitely agree that you should be prepared to deal with belligerent opponents. Every store has a "that guy". The closest I've come to a "hurrdurr burn is dumb, you're dumb" player was a death's shadow zoo player who was angry that he thought I slow rolled him (I didn't, I just made him commit mana to try to win before I beat him, I call it strategy). I said "good game" and went to shake his hand and he said something about being slow rolled and followed with "dumb deck plays itself".
It turns out he's the local "that guy", and I've heard him get salty about losing to a bubble hulk combo deck... while he was playing a valakut combo deck. It's best to just not engage and move on when you encounter "that guy".
I enjoy reading/listening to different opinions, techniques, strategies, etc. I got better at Burn because Ive seen interesting ideas and tips that I never knew/thought of. MagicDownunder videos is just 1 example.
I was SUMMONED!! Thanks for the shout-out.
Here are some different opinions:
1) In Naya Burn (with Atarka or Cat MD) the fastland SHOULD be Copperline Gorge (if you plan on running fast lands at all) because the first FETCH should be for RW. Here is my reasoning and my argument with E1985:
E1985: You should always fetch white first, but that's because you need white more frequently and earlier.
MDU: I agree which is why I do it. With 1 fast lands the odds of not seeing it in your opener is 88.33% so your most likely going to fetch for white first.
E1985: In general, you replace shocks with fastlands (I went from 3 Foundry to 2+1Vantage), so your argument amounts to "white is more important, so you should play more stomping grounds". You have it backwards.
MDU: My argument is that since you:
You should always fetch white first, but that's because you need white more frequently and earlier.
If the next topdeck land you draw is vantage and not another fetch you could be locked out of green (being stuck on 2-3 lands happens often enough).
[EDIT] Just to clarify I see the first 10-12 fetch as a white source, thus including the 2x Foundry that is 12-14 white sources. Odd of hitting white are MUCH higher then hitting green, if vantage is being played that number increases further and thus hurts hitting green even more.
- - -
I felt kinda vindicated when channelfireball posted a Naya Burn list with copperlines shortly after...
2) Don't always bolt the bird.
My reasoning: "Bolting the Bird" was something which applies more towards Midrange or Aggro decks running Bolt as side with creatures as a main wincon - with Burn... Bolt IS our wincon. I would personally only "Bolt" the land uptapping Elf in Ponza and maybe Noble (Unless I have a hand with 2 creatures or something).
3) Kor Firewalker is a clutch.
My reasoning: Its so narrow... you could just run extra PtE, Bloods or Palm which are good against the mirror and also hit other MUs.
4) Don't bring in Drev against Taxes or Fish.
My reasoning: Forcing yourself into your 3rd color is playing into their land denial plan.
I broke out my Mardu Burn deck just to try it out and I'm loving it thus far. Haven't done any rigorous testing, but went 5-0 at FNM and really liked how smooth and intuitive it played. Both modes are relevant and apply to all of our creatures; Vexing Devil always gets a bad rap because it gives your opponent a choice, but having a choice doesn't matter when you're able to drop him onto the battlefield numerous times. If you're looking to play the paper version, I suggest buying your Devils now while they're still under $10.
Sweet, thanks for the input! Would you happen to have a list and would not mind sharing?
Sure thing; went another 5-0 tonight with the same list, so I'll upload that list along with a brief match report sometime this afternoon.
Ive been hearing about a Mardu Burn version with Vexing Devil, Bump and Claim // Fame.
Anyone running it and what advantages/disadvantages are you seeing during play this version over a Naya or Boros version.

I maintain that your reasoning points to Inspiring Vantage being the fastland one should use, and I don't understand how you come to the opposite conclusion. If you want white more often, then the fastland you want should be white because then you're minimizing the amount of damage you take in order to get white. You do it this way so that your first fetch doesn't have to be white. While you could point to situations where you draw a fastland after you fetched for that color, the probability that this happens is smaller than the probability that it was in your opener. You shouldn't place higher weight on less probable outcomes.
The first fastland in Naya Burn without Nacatl should be Inspiring Vantage. It should be Copperline Gorge with Nacatl, so that you have a chance of a 3/3 Nacatl without taking 6 damage and because a Nacatl deck likely has more maindeck green than white.
[EDIT] Just to clarify I see the first 10-12 fetch as a white source, thus including the 2x Foundry that is 12-14 white sources. Odd of hitting white are MUCH higher then hitting green, if vantage is being played that number increases further and thus hurts hitting green even more.
You're placing an extraordinary amount of weight on what happens if your singleton fastland is the 8th-10th card you see in a game. If you see your singleton somewhere in your first 10 cards, it is more likely to have been in the first 7 than in the last 3. The whole reason you play a fastland is to see it in your opener and get a color for free. The splash color that you play the most of is the one you want to get for free, and that's white unless you play Nacatl.
Claim/fame isn't a burn card. It makes our overall strategy worse.
Are there times it works and has power? Sure.
Are there times we draw it and needed any burn spell instead and cry? Yup.
Devil is bad. Just because you found a reanimate card, it's still bad.

You must be a little confused as to where you are. This isn't the "lets figure out what the most fun way to play a burn deck is" thread. This tier 1 competitive discussion thread is several years old and reflects the theorycrafting/work of thousands of burn players attempting to make Burn the best deck it can be.
Claim / Fame does not belong in Burn. Vexing Devil only belongs if you are running a budget version and don't intend to take it to tournaments or anything. Imagine it's turn 4, you're in topdeck mode and your opponent is at 3 life. This is a scenario any burn player is quite used to finding themselves in. Topdeck mode is part of what makes burn great: When it comes down to it we basically run 3 or so spells and then dozens of versions of those spells. When we're in topdeck mode we want to draw that lightning bolt that closes the game out, not a claim/fame to reanimate a guide/swiftspear into their 3 drop and 4 drop blockers, or a vexing devil that they can fatal push.
The claim burn deck is good in an heavy combo/ramp meta.
Not so much against Company, Affinity, Rock, Fish, Bears and Shadow.
I'm in the opinion that almost any T1-3 can win an modern event if it run hots and the meta calls for it (this is why ALL-In-RED, Taxes or Skred sometimes make big finishes). Thus if your meta is heavy combo/ramp running claim burn is solid.

Amen, MDU !!!!
There was a point in time Burn was not Tier 1 yet different Naya and Boros decks emerged into that but it had to start with ideas first. Im not saying Mardu will replace it. Lets see how it turns out just like people saw how Naya turned out. Didnt happen over night and like everything there were doubters.
Burn has evolved from arguing about 2 drops like Keldon Marauders to Ash Zealot to now its clear Eidolon has made that argument non existent but it took people playing it and using correctly to make it. But it went from lets try this idea and into helping push Burn headed/landed in Tier 1 status. One day we may even get a better card that pushes or compliments Eidolon. And if ya were here at that time Burn was Tier 2 and not everyone was on board at first on Eidolon. Right for some wrong for some Grim Lavamancer is still argued to have or not or 1 or 2.
Remember the Oketra panic, in theory it was suppose to be the ultimate anti Burn and heck worried lots of Burn players but so far thats not happening.
We play, we test, we learn, we adapt, we get better and most importantly we have fun!
This is supposed to be a competitive forum. They openly discourage you from posting about budget builds.
There are dozens of pages of Vexing devil discussion spread across multiple primers.
Running a second card to hope to make that card better--Magic 101 says don't do such a thing.
You return your devil and they have a 4/5 Tarmagoyf--Devil doesn't get through.
You could cast fame to give the devil +2/+0--it'll still die. It's sorcery speed too--so they know what's coming at them.
You cast claim and fame, all 3 mana--at sorcery speed no less--you killed a Tarmagoyf. Good job. No damage. They're no closer to dead. Same 3 mana could have gone to a Lightning helix and a bolt, they lose 6 life that way--seems to be more in line with how we like to do things.
This deck will perform, because at it's core--it's burn. Burn is good. Burn wins games.
There is a place in the world for Claim//fame. It's just not burn
No one was talking budget build you brought it up. I was talking about new ideas and how its helped Burn evolve and how new versions like Naya and Boros was a newer version of Burn. This is a forum for discussion it doesnt say only talk about the 75 you want. If this place wasnt open to discussion then we would always be a Mono Red Burn but again its evolved with ideas and testing.
If you look one the right side you will see "Modern Competitive League", PTQ and other events and yes its not the exact version of Mardu from the video of a guy who went 13-3 but still competitive...... https://www.mtggoldfish.com/archetype/modern-mardu-burn-39295#paper

Do u get 2 tell every body why they can say. i might be newer 2 burn and trying 2 improve. how many time u top 8, how many time u world champion. so why can other not have opinion different then u. acting stuck up not very welcoming
Mardu burn is fine.
Any variant running Vexing devil is not.
Claim//fame is not.
IMO Boros Burn/Boros Burn with g splash are the best burn deck in an open meta.
Reasoning: Fast-Lands and being in only two colors allows for limited amount of damage taken from lands + lightning helix means that you can grind games and have better odds when thing go into T4+ range.
Mardu + Claim Burn are the best goldfish burn deck - good in a known meta where goldfishing is possible. (I do agree that Mardu Burn is better then claim burn overall)
Reasoning: Higher chances for T3-4 kills but higher counts of horrid creatures or 3C forces you to end the game quickly (one way or another).
Naya Burn is in the middle...
Reasoning: It can goldfish slightly better then Boros Burn but 3C carries the risk for land denial, taxes and other fast decks to have an edge on you.
- - -
Long story short: They all have strengths and weakness so its a meta thing.
I for one wouldn't tell someone that their burn deck is horrid if they running MD Kor Firewalkers in a meta with filled 100% burn players.

If you look one the right side you will see "Modern Competitive League", PTQ and other events and yes its not the exact version of Mardu from the video of a guy who went 13-3 but still competitive......

Do u get 2 tell every body why they can say. i might be newer 2 burn and trying 2 improve. how many time u top 8, how many time u world champion. so why can other not have opinion different then u. acting stuck up not very welcoming
Any variant running Vexing devil is not.
Claim//fame is not.

Long story short: They all have strengths and weakness so its a meta thing.
I for one wouldn't tell someone that their burn deck is horrid if they running MD Kor Firewalkers in a meta with filled 100% burn players.
