I was testing a mono-red burn deck over the weekend and the test seemed promising. Usually I play legacy burn but my friend was testing a few modern decks that he might play in a few tournaments. So when I was building my deck I had a few things in my mind, I wanted to make it mono-red and I didn't want to use Eidolon because I wanted to see if Swiftspear was good. I don't like Eidolon and Swiftspear in Legacy and I had doubts I would like the two in modern.
I'd assumed that since I'm playing mono-red, I'm not absorbing damage from fetch/shocklands. I was correct, my opponent was down 6 life in the first two turns.
I'd assumed that Blood Moon would make an good main deck slot. I was correct, I dropped a 3rd turn blood moon and my opponent was shut down. I think my next build I might add a 3rd blood moon.
I did like Ash's haste but I think Eidolon would be a better control card. I know how awesome is Eidolon (I do own 2 playsets but I was testing Swfitspear)
I'd assumed that without Eidolon, Swiftspear would outperform. No she didn't. Maybe it's because when I tested her I was playing Mishra's Bauble and Urza's Bauble or I'm demanding too much out of her. I do noticed that I have a good number of 2cc spells and Shard Volley that seemed to get in the way of pumping her on the attack. I also didn't like that I was attacking with her for 3 turns as a 1/2 creature. I'll stick with Swiftspear until I get another playset of Vexing Devils or if I find a better creature that fits.
Shard Volley... I do have mixed feelings about the card. I remember years ago there was a debate in the legacy burn thread about Shard Volley, and I didn't see the card a good staple because of fireblast. Shard Volley wasn't difficult to play in my modern burn deck, but it did suck to have 2 in my opening hand and I couldn't cast them to pump swiftspear, without going into a land disadvantage. It did come in handy when I had 4 lands in play. I might drop one Shard Volley.
Rift Bolt... Not much to assume here. I think Rift Bolt is one of the worst burn spells in legacy because the best time to play the card is turn 1, and we are usually playing Goblin Guide. Rift Bolt would be ok in turn 2, but we are playing Eidolon. I wasn't playing Eidolon but it didn't help drawing up Rift Bolt and suspending the card on turn 4. I did win but I didn't like the idea of suspending my game winner on turn 4.
Searing Blaze... Not bad, I had a good number of targets. I thought running only basic lands would make running Searing Blaze a little difficult. It wasn't that difficult, there was one time I had 2 lands in play and cursing the searing blaze, but I drew my 3rd land.
Forked Bolt... I needed another burn spell, and I was looking at shocks. Forked Bolt remind me of a 1cc version of fire/ice and the card came in handy. I do like the idea of taking out 2 chumps for 1cc.
My friend was telling me that Leyline of Sanctity is a very big card in modern. And one of the reasons why most modern burn players play more than 1 color because they need to remove it. I could see that being a problem but I wonder what sideboard options I could consider (yeah I know red cannot destroy enchantments and Anarchy is not modern legal). But the Leyline don't stop me from attacking and global damage like Flamebreak.

Yes Blood Moon is a beast and in my Mono Red build I run 4. I also Have had it in my Boros build and it rotates in and out depending on meta.
As for Leyline, yes it is a a thing but not just for Burn so it sees play. Some decks like RW Prison main deck them and others have it in the side for Burn (although thats not the only side people use). In Mono Red I have tested Ratchet Bomb as a Leyline removal but that can take too long. If Chaos Warp were Modern legal or printed in Modern it would help. Your right on about Flamebreak. Forked Bolt is great in a creature/mana dork heavy meta. With Eldrazi and Death Shadow cards like Deflecting Palm and Path to Exile are to hard to give up. Also the Enchantment Removal so I mainly run Boros. To me Helix and Charm can be replaceable but not Palm or Path (although Dismember isnt a bad fill in).
Ive seen players who play Burn and will swear by keeping it in the mirror and some who swear by siding it out in the mirror.
I'm on keeping them plan.
Though I play 4x PtE so I need it to apply pressure.

Also keep Eidolon vs Shadow - you'll them him to get through Counter-locks.
Im on the 4 PtE plan also so yes I need Eidolon to carry some of that damage weight. Also I enjoy your videos, even an experienced player like myself can always learn and get better. Your videos I know have helped me and Im sure they have helped new players as well. Keep up the good work

Beast yes, I felt bad for my friend because we were testing his decks and my deck crushed his, to the point that he tried to sideboard cards and I still won.

Ratchet is too slow. I've always liked Chaos Warp but I had seen anybody play the card in legacy bur. I do think 3 mana spells are tough for Legacy burn when we are competing against decks with brainstorm. Legacy burn don't have the consistency to play a 3rd land in turn 3.
The thing that sucks about flamebreak, it was a good card in early burn because the creatures were disposable. Today's burn creatures stay in play.

Yeah Forked bolt has it limitations. But I do think it's much better then shock because we have the option to take out 2 chumps.
White is interesting, but when I'm adding white I'm looking at my Soulfire Grand Master and Serra Ascendant and wonder if I should take out Eidolon and Guides and go for it... I'm not sure if those white creatures are really good for the modern format.

I generally side out of Atarka's Command and Eidolon in the mirror and bring in 2 Firewalker, 2 Palm, 3 Path, and whatever of Helix/Skullcrack/Searing Blaze is in the sideboard at the time. If I have to go low on life to get Firewalker out, I don't want to see an Eidolon.
Your videos I know have helped me and Im sure they have helped new players as well. Keep up the good work
Thanks, I'm glad some people watch them (I'm currently floating 500+ tix playing on profit with 1800 rating with burn).
How do you guys find the Shadow MU?
I ask mainly because its the most discussed MU on this forum which I find slightly odd since I believe I think its slightly favorable (grixis is harder then jund but still slightly in our favour).
Also Mirran Crusader tech being discussed on Reddit is hilarious against the current boltless Grixis Shadow list.

Is Grafdigger's the right answer at the moment? Turns off Snaps, but folds to K-Command which most Grixis lists run 2-3 of in the main.
Can cause a lot of problems for dredge, not as much living end--but we often do ok vs living end.
What grixis lists care enough about GY interactions that we'd side in Cage?
Cage does literally nothing against Living End so... Dredge? It being not as good in one matchup we want it makes it okay overall I'd say.
Turns snapcaster mage into a 2/1 for 2? With DS decks dealing themselves so much damage, I don't know that we necessarily want to go after their plan so much as just finish their life total off for them. DS being kind of "The deck"at the moment, it at least bears mentioning. They like to delve in bigger threats, and so RIP/Relic may be better.
Dredge is definitely a place the deck shines.
Counters company is a part of my post you either missed or chose to ignore. It seems to be one of the most popular decks behind DS variants, and Cage is excellent against those decks.
Living end is on the rise, and thus a deck we have to at least consider. I understand how living end works, and that cage doesn't affect it. The caveat here is that we often do enough damage on the front end that we're able to finish them when they play living end.
It's possible RIP is the best option for the time being, but Company decks are going to cord into answers if you're not using cages. There is of course the argument that it's a really tough match up and maybe we should just consider it a loss and give more consideration to beating the others.

That's a good point. Some matchups are just bad there is no need in wasting SB slots for them. Your better served to use those slots for the 40/60 50/50 matchups.

elconquistador1985's burn list on Tapped out has some great primers and articles attached to it that helped me a lot when I was first starting out with burn six or so months ago. http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/18-04-15-naya-burn/
I'd also recommend checking out the subreddit for our deck at www.reddit.com/r/lavaspike. You can search through the posts and find some great sequencing advice as well. Hope this helps

I'm very happy with my main deck at the moment, but don't really know what direction to go with my sideboard. Especially how much to dedicate to Counters Company (also any advice on how to play this matchup would be appreciated).
Right now I have 4x Destructive Revelry, 3x Deflecting Palm, 3x Kor Firewalker, 3x Rest in Peace, and 2x Path to Exile.

Thanks for the shoutout. There's also several of the same ones and probably some additional ones linked in the first post of this thread.
The article about playing through counters is excellent.
What do you do to gain an edge in the mirror then?
Probably a combination of smart play and Lightning Helix/Deflecting Palm. I only play Kor Firewalker because there's a ton of Burn players near me. There are tradeoffs that have to be made with your sideboard. It may be a wise decision to shore up another difficult matchup and battle the mirror on the back of playing better than your opponent with less narrow sideboard cards.
Is it recommended to play fetches in a mono red burn build? I was thinking 8 fetches and 10 mountains, for the sole purpose of thinning out the deck but wanted to run the idea by you guys first. Thanks in advance !

It's for this exact reason that my version of boros burn keeps 2 ensnaring bridges (subbed out the skullcracks) main deck because my meta usually has 20+ players and at least 7 of them play merfolk or some explosive aggro zoo build that I simply cannot race even with a hand full of gas.

Probably not against Skred Red, but who knows.
Storm doesn't care about Kor since it doesn't trigger from storm copies.
