With CoCo, Chord and that damn new combo becoming more prevalent Ive swithed to Grafdigger's Cage. At the end of the day Relic, RIP and Cage are all good options in different ways to affect graveyards, its all meta and personal preference.
I was testing with my friends this week and the question was if Searing Blaze should be cut for Atarka's Command. Searing Blaze is conditional 3 damage in the way that you have to have a land you can play or a fetch you can crack, and a creature as a target preferrably with 3 or less toughness. This is quite a lot of criteria to be able to do 3 damage. Wouldn't Atarka's Command be better in this case?
Also, if you have Lightning Helix and Boros Charm in your hand as well, you don't want to -not- crack your fetch to cast either of those hoping to get some value out of Searing Blaze right? You just want to do the 3 damage unconditionally.
I don't think the meta is so devoid of creatures that Searing Blaze should be dropped. Searing Blaze I can see reasonable arguments for playing anywhere from 2 to 4 of them in the main with the rest in the side, but I wouldn't drop it. It's the strongest way you have to kill small creatures.
Hello Burn players. Quick question that may have been addressed a while back but I'll throw it out there anyway. (This is coming from a predominantly EldraziTron player.)
Would Burn have ANY interest with Hazoret the Fervent as a +1 in the SB or MB? I know its 4 mana, I know its not a damage spell per se. I know it might be near a dead card in your opening hand. But I've played against Burn a multitude of different times, with a multitude of different decks and there always seems to be that game where Burn is going to put me away but they end up top decking one or even two lands and run out of gas and lose. I assume that is what Grim Lavamancer is for of course. Problem is he is easily removable. Hazoret could let you pitch those lands for the last 2 damage and let her attack. The indestructible would give you a decent chump blocker vs. just about anything on the ground as well. It would also dodge things like IoK and Fatal Push. Just a thought, any interest or keep it in the binder where it belongs.

Burn can just fizzle out and lose, and there are games that Burn will lose on the turn before it would have won. It comes with the territory, and it's why Legacy Burn sometimes played a singleton extra-spicy SDT for filtering before it got banned.
Hazoret definitely does not have a place in Burn because it's 4 mana, does nothing the turn it comes down (which is around the time we'd like to be winning the game), and has a very expensive ability that only deals 2. I say it does nothing the turn it comes down, because any given opponent is going to have creatures available chump block it if you attack on whatever turn you hit land 4 and play it (if it's active at the time). Ideally you'd use it to pitch lands for 2 damage, but you can do that for a lot cheaper with Molten Vortex. Grim Lavamancer fills that role or squeezing out extra damage even if you don't have damage in hand better than anything else. Burn doesn't need to play flood protection in a 19-20 land deck. That's why it only plays 19-20 lands.

Thanks for the reply. So would you suggest a singleton copy of Molten Vortex in the SB for someone experiencing the running out of gas scenario hitting into lands? The reason I ask is that I have a friend on Burn and he gets frustrated when he has me knocked down to 2 or 3 life and top decks one or two lands. I draw a Reality Smasher and trample through the last damage through a Guide, Swiftspear or Eidolon and its gg. Thought I might suggest Hazoret as it could take out my Smasher and protect him from the trample damage. But it sounds like its just too slow. I could recommend Molten Vortex then.

I've seen Vortex played, but it's inconsistent, and Burn is consistent over every other factors. Like another guy said, it's a land light deck that doesn't really play to having unwanted lands IN HAND. But what you see with some regularity is a copy or two of Shard Volley. This is much better for us because we don't have many lands stranded in hand, but more games than not, we end up with more lands in play than total cmc of spells in hand at some point. Hope that helps

I would not suggest Molten Vortex. I mentioned Molten Vortex because it does the same thing you suggested for Hazoret and it does it cheaper, but is still never used in competitive Burn lists. I would suggest Grim Lavamancer, since it's going to be 2 damage for R as long as you have a graveyard with 2+ cards in it (and it doesn't die).
Burn plays 19-20 lands in order to minimize the probability of flooding. It's not necessary to play something like Molten Vortex to minimize the effect of something that's already minimized. I think your friend is getting hung up by only recalling negative experiences, dwelling on them, and thinking that they're something he needs to work to mitigate. He just needs to accept that you'll flood sometimes. It's like getting upset when you draw a flush from a playing card deck.
Maybe one day we will get a cheap burn spell that cantrips. I Had a ruff night 1-2 drop. Won against tron ,loss against Bogles never hit deflecting palm and loss to elves which went off turn three one game on me.
Thanks for the replies all. I will recommend to him maybe a copy or two of Grim Lavamancer then.

Grim dies without effecting the board state on the turn that it is laid. I dropped it back when I would play it turn 1 and they collective brutality me to kill it, make me discard a card and gained 2 life. Essentially I lost before I ever got to turn 2.
A lot of people seem overly shy to run Shard Volley. I remember when you ran 4 copies. It's a finishing card, or it at least hits both the player or creature when you have to. 2 may be too much but I'm sure 1 is right. Running 2 doesn't bother any of my games. I can also honestly say Shard Volley has won me top deck games where as grim lavamancer would have been a game loss which is the slot it replaced.
Did not play burn this week. The other people who did were complainin 2 much hate cards out there and burn missin 1 more good peace that why it not doin so well lately. To me it like burn runs out of gas too often and too depending on top deck for the win. Lavaman maybe my answer.

Burn has enough pieces to be good but the meta is changing it's becoming a lot quicker and a lot of decks that were dead like bogles are starting to see play again.
Grim Lavamancer does help with having extra gas. But I agree that the meta is shifting/growing again. Right now its probably been the most diverse meta Ive seen in a long time. There are so many viable decks. And probably the largest group of tier 1 and 2 decks since Modern has been around. Balance is good for the game unlike when in Standard like when Jace/Stoneforge or Eldrazi or Saheeli Cat or etc in Standard.
Burn's core is pretty much set starting with Mono Red, Boros, Naya, hell basically almost all Burn deck types have these 44
19-20 Lands
4 Guide
4 Swift Swiftspear
4 Eidolon
4 Lava
4 Rift
4 Bolt
After this its a toss up of about 16 spots with any of these, yeah I know you may have another card to throw in here. Yes I know Skullcrack and/or Atarka's is more then likely in the core but not everyone runs 4 of and some even have it in their sides and the same for the rest.
Helix
Atarka's
Skullcrack
Charm
Grim
Blaze
Volley
And the side is even more diverse.
If there was another card we could get in the next set that fits into those 16 slots that would be great. Or heck even better if we had another card push their way into the core like Eidolon and Swiftspear has since their arrival. For now Burn is still tier 1 and very competitive.
You don't want to go above 16 creatures as that typically goes into zoo range.
It seems there are too many ground troops recently to go creature build. Past turn 1 and 2 creatures are going to get clustered into theirs and in the end theirs are going to start to get bigger or have tricks like persist.
Grim dies without effecting the board state on the turn that it is laid. I dropped it back when I would play it turn 1 and they collective brutality me to kill it, make me discard a card and gained 2 life. Essentially I lost before I ever got to turn 2.

I can honestly say that Grim Lavamancer has won me games that Shard Volley wouldn't have, because it's repeatable creature removal against things like Elves and CoCo. Grim Lavamancer is a stupidly powerful card against light removal decks.
People used to run 4 Shard Volley because there wasn't much else to play. It's fine as a 1-of now, though. I wouldn't consider it any kind of protection from flooding.
I know the 3 cmc is a big turn off, but Rift Bolt is sometimes hard cast for 3 mana. Got your opponent to 4 life, hoping to top deck a Boros Charm and you draw another land. Land could be pitched to Lightning Storm for that last 4 damage. I also suppose Flames of the Blood Hand could be used for that last 4 damage too but Lightning Storm could be cast earlier and does target creatures as well in a pinch. Just a thought, I know you all have spent WAY more time on theory-crafting your decks. And it seems if it isn't 1 or 2 cmc there isn't much interest.

Definitely not. First of all, we play 19-20 lands and therefore don't want enough lands and are unlikely to even have enough lands in hand to charge this thing up. Secondly, imagine you cast it and do charge it up and then your opponent says "cool, I have a land too, take 7/9/11?" Lightning Storm works in Ad Nauseam, where you draw the whole deck and then charge it enough to kill in one shot and hold enough lands back so you don't get it redirected back at your face.
And it seems if it isn't 1 or 2 cmc there isn't much interest.
It isn't that your ideas are being dismissed because they aren't 1 or 2 cmc. Three mana is often difficult to get to in Burn. If you want to suggest a 3 cmc spell make sure it is strong enough in the context of what Burn is trying to do to justify it often being a dead card (as in unable to cast) or that it fills a gap in the deck (for example Exquisite Firecraft in a heavy counter spell meta). Four or more cmc, don't even bother. The deck is light on lands and doesn't run cantrips (nor does it want to run cantrips). Getting to four mana is not a good thing. Playing cards that require four mana are a bad idea. If you really are getting flooded a lot running Burn, then the answer isn't add a mana sink. The answer is either get into the habit of shuffling more/better or drop a land.
