Hey guys, on my way to an open today. Anybody have any thoughts on my current build? The last 2 weeks I haven't lost a match to GR Tron or Jeskai Control with Nahiri, which I would say are the hardest matchups. Could be that those players were just bad with the decks, but I like to think I have been playing tight. My list has a lot of thought into it, and I don't have any budget concerns for the card choices. I chose to leave my Linvala at home because I haven't seen enough Company decks. Anyway wish me luck! I will give a report later. Sorry for formatting, on my phone and on the road.
Do not discuss bans/unbans in this thread. The Modern forum rule are incredibly clear about this. If anyone posts this kind of content, report it and do not respond.
" There is just no place for it in the meta,"
Maybe not in YOUR meta, but for some of us our local metas aren't choked with tron, jund, nahiri...abzan won a GP, what? 3 weeks ago?, against a field of jund players with Kalitas, and i think that player beat out tron in the final match
" The printing of Kalitas puts this deck to bed forever unless its banned... kalitas just does it all. If it resolves and you dont have path or draw it within two turns you are dead."
That seems like a horrible argument. Like saying Burn is just a mediocre deck bc wizards printed stuff like Leyline of Sanctity or Kor Firewalker. we have work-arounds, we have removal. Does Kalitas put a giant wrench in our plan? yes, but its a 2-of 4 drop. i dont want to see it, just like Leyline of the void or cage. but a good pilot can navigate and side in for such hate.
"The back-up gavony township plan does nothing as it is too mana-intense and you can bet you bottom dollar more hate will show up before then."
i will just disagree to this. ive won enough games thanks to a 1/2 bird. is it slow, yes, but its suppose to be the backup plan or the out when, shocker, our opponent has GY hate.
"Tbh unbanning pod does nothing at all at this point."
i seriously do not understand your logic in this statement. Pod is a chord on a artifact, it can get me a fiend hunter to take out the kalitas. problem solved
"The designers are all about new and crazy abilities and multiple abilities each card. I get the feeling that knowing that they dropped modern from the pro tour to grant additional design space, they probably aren't considering the repercussions of a lot of their creations in modern."
this is a bit of a grey area. i highly doubt Wizards is going to start printing absurdly powerful cards just because their focus will be standard. if they really didn't care then they could just remove the banned list altogether. but they don't because they do. They removed modern from the pro-tour because they want to spotlight new cards and sets. Modern is still going to be considered in design because modern is still a format a huge portion of players want and play.
"I am definitely not disrepecting anyone, I'm just saying I dont think it will be able to put up the same results in modern anymore unless something changes. I think it may be tier two, but I just dont see it doing that well. I have run archangel backup plan, its decent but It doesnt really make the deck more durable"
now THIS is an arguable topic. but as others have pointed out, as a teir 1 deck most players know how our deck runs and have hate to bring in, just like we have a toolbox of hate to bring in as well. Modern has been a very complicated game of rock-paper-scissors of different deck styles. Kalitas brings jund and other black decks a wonderful answer against us. But i will continue on with abzan. they may not throw us a bone anytime soon, at least not a single creature that reads "abzan wins", but they might give us a angelfeeder-esk combo to sneak in our list.
speaking of which how can you seriously say 2 kalitas in a jund deck makes us auto loose but a 2-card combo that doesn't use the GY to win doesn't really make our deck more durable? when angel comes out against jund they have to have removal in hand or the table is turned. and by the time we can bring in a 5drop angel they have most likely used all their removal on finks and sisters.
i didn't mean to lecture, but for some reason your blanket comments about this build leave me wondering if you really liked playing this deck or are just looking for a reason to give up on it.
So this is my current take on a different version of an Abzan CoCo deck. While this deck runs 5 colors it retains the Abzan CoCo core which is why I'm posting my list here.
I've won a couple local tournaments and FNMs with this list but I'd like some help to improve it:
So it's a very flexible deck with a lot of hate mostly directed at my meta so many of the cards like Glen Elendra Archmage can be replaced for other silver bullets for what you expect to meet. Otherwise the deck aims to win through either beating down the opponent, destroying their lands or the usual abzan company combo finish.

I was wondering about replacing my 1x scooge MB for 1x Anafenza, the Foremost. The bigger boddy does not die to bolt, anger and dont need mana to "activate" the exile clause. Any thoughts?
I can see why I would like to run Anafenza, the Foremost but scooze has the ability to remove things like lingering souls and Bridge From Below even though bridge is rather easy to remove. while Anafenza only removes creatures. But I'll give it a try and tell you how it works out.
Scooze gets snapcaster targets which is very relevant. Against grixis for example, if you manage to have a large ooze out with a spellskite in play and both are more or less on topdeck mode then it is extremely hard for them to muster a comeback.
Had a total epiphany and I think that this hybrid may make the deck spicey and competitive, but I am not sure if it still remains in the same vein as it dropped the cocos, if you don't think it applies to this any more let me know an I will post in the regular forum. Its still combo based and low to the ground but with more of a control edge which makes it less susceptible to tron and other counter decks and decks with kalitas. I am playtesting now and it is going well as the synergy is still there but you clear the way more and don't have to go all in on cocos that could end up wiffing or countered. It also generates value though e-witness and mana dorks, with e witness often getting back destruction or hand disruption. Take a look and let me know what you guys think. WOOOO!!!
Not sure it's really a collected company deck without any... you know... Collected Company. Your deck looks more like an Abzan Midrange deck but instead of Goyfs, rhinos and souls you try to jam the combo in. Im not sure it will work tbh

I can see that. It has been going well, but I could be getting lucky so far

I keep scooze main and anafore in SB. Not to be blasphemous but I've found anafore to be a good sub for linvala for the mirror, or juse natural hate against dredge/living end. Also she helps a persisted finks get back to normal. Otherwise I much rather have scooze. It may eat a bolt, bUT that's one less bolt they have for our combo and scooze can eat noncreatures.
If your scoozes are consistently dying to bolt, try treating it like a four-drop instead of a two-drop.
Kalitas is an issue, but we have removal and Archangel should really be in every Company deck.
Nahiri Jeskai is not a good matchup by any means. I suppose it depends on their list, but I think everyone maindecks Anger of the Gods, which is a huge problem.
The MTGSalvation ban discussion policy is really bad in my opinion (I hope this doesn't count as discussing bans?)
Nahiri is busted so I'll be running every flavor of Nahiri deck as my main Modern deck for a while, but I do test a lot with Company and it's definitely a very strong deck.

On mtgsalvation people don't want to discuss ideas, so I give people something else to discuss: my controversial opinions.
Sac it to seer or play it with a skite on the battlefield and pray they most likely won't have the second kalitas in hand, and we mostly don't mind a single 2/2 zombie token except if we're already in a pretty bad spot.
Are there any commentated gameplay videos where I can learn matchup specific strategies? I know that watching videos is hugely different from playing and experiencing it oneself but I'm still new to the Modern format and like to have some hints for playing against the current meta.
What I'm looking for is not the general "How to play this deck" but rather things like "Should I chord in my mainphase for my combo or keep it up to get some silver bullet since I'm predicting card X?". It often boils down to the question "Who's the beatdown?" but I'd like to learn the possible long term gameplans for specific matchups.
There are a few videos, most are fairly old at this point. I'm a working on the primer right now so they're not up, but here they are if you want to sift through them:
Holy crud, I just realized that grafdiggers cage is the most absurd hate card and was literally made to hate on Abzan coco/pod decks (while also hating on dredge). I just realized that not only does it shut off the combo, but it also shuts off chord and company. Wow, what one mana can get you these days!
