Yes it's better to run peer remand etc as it helps facilitate your main win con...it's not in the sideboard because they will already side in graveyard hate to deal with PiF so you'll just be feeding into their hate
Do you guys sometimes Turn 3 Ritual --> Gifts Ungiven for speed/value? I feel like in certain pressured situations, I'm incentivized to make this kind of play.
Looking at putting this deck together. I had one question though. Why does no one add in Iona/Unburial combo? After Putting the stock list together I had 6 flex spots left and could not figure out why a combo this powerful for the cost of 2 flex spots was not being added. Is it because a skilled storm player does not need this and is better served adding cards that add consistency to the combo rather then a plan b wincon?
I like the idea of it, because it's so brutal and people don't expect it. Also is super easy to drop this against say, Burn and lock them out. Because you don't need as much set-up.
Problem is that the combo attacks from the same axis as the main plan; opponents side in graveyard hate to screw you over games 2 and 3. Iona/Rites falls prey to the same kind of hate. Also, you'll have to make certain deck construction changes to accommodate it. In particular -- What if you draw into Iona/Rites? You'll basically have to run Faithless Looting (or Cathartic Reunion or Desperate Ravings if you're lucky) instead of Peer Through Depths for the discard feature. Faithless Looting isn't a terrible card in the deck to be fair. I just think Peer is better.
You might also be incentivized to update your land base to accommodate black/white. City of Brass/Mana Confluence offers some spicy tech. Also justifies Wear/Tear a little more. I guess. I'm not sure if adding B/W to the land base in anyway is really worth it...but you can. Or you can just use straight UR land base + discard and only generate B/W with Manamorphose.
I really like the Iona/Rites combo and wish I can justify it, but the deck's already consistent enough, has an alternate way of winning (Empty the Warrens), and the reanimated package still gets rekt by graveyard hate.
Reprints the one card that people point to when saying that art objectifies women.
Well done Wizards.
Liliana does not objectify women in any way at all. We have gotten to a point in our society that every single picture of a women must be objectifying a women in some negative way......blah blah blah.. That is not the case. (((Sarcasm)))Picture of a girl drinking a milk shake, must be sex related and putting women down, picture of girl sitting on a beach, picture of a girl driving a car, picture of a girl on the moon at a new space station.)))
You have a picture of an attractive strong power women who girls dress up as for anime conventions. What more do you want? The picture is fine, happy to see a reprint. Sick of of seeing people claim that everything in existence must be putting women down. Then all I have to do is replace the word "women" with anything else to get the same mentality; fish, cats, arabs, blacks, jews, men, environment, whites, chinese, old people, etc. It doesn't matter what word I put in. Stop sucking life out of everything man. That artwork of her is awesome. Stop putting stuff down man. Just stop. If the picture was really as negative as you claim she would totally nude, in a kitchen, making sandwiches and giving blow jobs. Her abilities would be horrible as well. +1 do nothing -2 do nothing -6 do nothing. Instead liliana of the veil is an amazing planeswalker comparable to jace, the mind sculpter with great art to appreciate.
My suggestion listen to some comedy radio for a while, pandora is free, youtube is free there is something out there for you. ***** go make fun of somebody. The whole world is so serious and campaigning for some cause, or someones rights, everything is a hate crime, racist, sexist. blah blah blah.
"O no mcdonalds must be slandering a hate crime against skinny people every time they make a big mac." hahaha jeeze You're just someone perpetuating another groups negative perspective that they've made you believe is correct. Look at the picture for a hour and tell me what's wrong with it? I don't see anything.
I have heard vague rumors of a moustache-dispensing vending machine in a distant laundromat, across the street from a tattoo parlor. However, this information is shaky, and time is of the essence.
If I have easy access to another gifts, or plan on grabbing one in my pile with a past in flames or whatever else I need, I will often rit gifts on turn three. I think it's often the right play. You have to be careful what you grab if you think they might have surgical though.

I've been siding in some number of lightning bolts in this matchup to surprise grapeshot and cheat out a win. Going cantrip into bolt into grapeshot can sometimes just kill them. In addition blood moons and Empty can get you there...it is a tough matchup though
Try roast for the shadows and delvers. Only costs 1 with a reducer and is useful vs a wide range of strategies including both eidolons, devoted druid. I'm trying it in place of bolts/dismembers.
so... been testing for GP Birmingham, since I don't own a modern deck, and while I know shadow is only 7% of the metagame, losing to fatal push/path which seems to be everywhere else is just so disheartening...
Hey all, desperate player here. I recently returned to Storm since the new lists with Baral seemed very conistent and fun to play.
This has been true, but I keep getting DESTROYED by all the different Shadow decks, Grixis being the worst.
I bought the deck on mtgo as well, and am currently sitting at a disheartening 2-6 against Shadow decks. Siding in all the Empties is great in theory; and in fact the games I have won were mostly on the back of some number of angry Goblins. However, even when I did get some Goblins into play, I keep getting wrecked by the anti-hate savvy Shadow players are now adapting, like Detention Sphere , Izzet Staticaster and Anger of the Gods.
I just now read about taking out Gifts for Pieces and Empties, so far I have been cutting Remands and Peer's, since those do not help recouping the lost cards. I will try that in my next league. Moreover, a friend has been playing MD Apostle's Blessing to some success, but I am still wondering:
Is there something more that we can play/do in these matchups, or is the matchup just that bad without something drastic like Leyline?
I would keep in Peer Through Depths because you want as many cards as possible that actually find your business spells.
I haven't had much difficulty playing against this deck. People keep saying the matchup is difficult so I suspect that I might just be playing against inexeperienced players, but my experience is that Death's Shadow decks actively attempt to reduce their life total below 10 and Storm spells make it pretty easy to string together that much damage--even a low number of Goblins isn't bad, and I've won quite a few games attacking with Electromancer backed by Lightning Bolts and Grapeshot.

You're definitely playing against inexperienced players.
Just bought everything I was missing for this deck and waiting for it to come in the mail. I'm going to be trying something in between Martin and Caleb's latest lists probably. So the way I understand this is that if you're expecting GY hate, Eidolons and leylines you take out 1 grape and all gifts for 3 Empty and 2 Pieces, but what else do you generally take out if you want to bring in stuff like Swan Song, Dismember, LB, Echoing Truth, Pyroclasm, etc? Thanks
Hi guys, new recruit here. I'm traditionally a grixis player but saw how much fun the gift baral list is (I was never a big fan of pyromancer's ascension) and thought: I have the manabase, the spells aren't too expensive, and I have 3 blood moons, why not? Boom, hundred bucks later I have the Gifts Baral list sleeved up.
On to business: I'm honestly worried about GY hate. I was wondering if Thing in the Ice is a decent post-board plan B? I had 4 of them lying around and I figured if the opponent does something like RIP or Relic of Prog, I can still bounce the board and swing for 7. The issue is probably that they'll just be extra targets for any fatal pushes, though I suppose with 4 baral, 4 electro and 4 thing, they'll have to make a choice. Another issue I foresee is that it could potentially clash with Empty, although with some degree of skill of course we would flip thing first and then cast Empty.

Hey guys, played a small tournament yesterday and thought I'd share my experience. Before I begin, I play a stock list...the only things that are unique are:
2x Peer through Depths
1x Noxious Revival (been trying to figure out what I want this slot to actually be)
8th Mana Dork
2x Remand
White Splash
Round 1 Land Swan (2-0)
Game 1: I am on the play and I have a pretty fast hand with a few rituals, mana Dork and gifts. He plays a T2, T3 and T4 treasure hunt and gets unlucky a little bit. His final hunt finds him a seismic assault that would win him the game on T5, but I storm out on T4.
Out
1x Noxious Revival
1x Sleight of Hand
1x Empty the Warrens
In
2x Wear//Tear
1x Swan Song
Game 2: I keep a slower hand with remand, Swan Song, Baral, land and a few cantrips. The cantrips find me some more pieces and he plays a T3 Seismic assault. I Remand it and then I play Baral with Swan Song back up. He plays assault and I Swan Song it, he dispels and taps out. I draw a peer through depths and peer finds me a Gifts and I storm him out.
Round 2 Skred Red (2-1)
Game 1: He plays a T1 Relic and I am behind the 8 ball pretty quickly. I manage to storm a grapeshot to kill his Chandra (1 loyalty) and Pia, but the relic was hard to overcome...I tried to dig for Empty but couldn't find it in time and I get killed by Koth.
Out
1x Noxious Revival
2x Remand
1x Past in Flames
1x Sleight of Hand
1x Goblin Electromancer
In
2x Wear//Tear
1x Echoing Truth
1x Cyclonic Rift
2x Empty the Warrens
Game 2: I keep a hand of Cyclonic Rift, baral, couple lands a cantrips and a Gifts. He, once again, plays the relic on turn 1, but I draw a ritual and manamorphose in the first 3 turns, he taps out and plays a Koth on T4 untapping a mountain and passes. I Rift his relic and he cycles it. With him tapped out I go off while playing around SSG and lightning bolt.
Game 3: This one was crazy he T2 Koth ditching 2 SSG and proceeds to beat me down. He ultimates Koth and puts me on a 2 turn clock. I have 4 mana and he has 4 untapped mountains. All I have in my hand is a bunch of rituals and few manamorphose and a baral. I play the baral and cast a ritual. He responds by taping 3 lands to deal 3 damage to baral. I respond with 2 manamorphose. I draw another manamorphose and am echoing truth. I cast manamorphose and draw gifts. I play the rest of my rituals and gifts for the normal Past in Flames package and then echoing truths my baral back to my hand. I replay baral play my 4th manamorphos and combo him out.
Round 3 U/W Control (2-1)
Game 1: This game was frustrating...I eventually set up a scenario where he has 2 lands open and I have a Remand in my hand and baral in pay. I don't have a Gifts but I have a peer through depths a bunch of rituals and manamorphose and a Past in Flames. I cycle my manamorphoses and draw 2 cards and the peer and grab a serum visions, I play the visions and then I ritual a couple times. afterwards, I PiF and play 3 serums, 1 peer and, 3 manamorphose and didn't draw a single gifts or grapeshot. I draw an Empty the Warrens and made 42 goblins, but he supreme verdicts me and I lost to snapcaster mate and colonnade.
Out
1x Empty the Warrens
1x Noxious Revival
1x Sleight of Hand
In
2x Dispel
1x Swan Song
Game 2: Pretty easy game, my opening hand has a swing song and dispel as well as some cantrips and a baral. He plays T1 Ancestral Visions and then I play a baral and just wait until I have everything I need and go off. When I went off he tries to cryptic with Dispel backup, but my 2 counterspells stopped him.
Game 3: This game was kind of like game 1. I have a Dispel in my opening hand and a man dork. He plays ghost quartet T2 and suspends an ancestral visions. This allows me to play Electromancer on t2. I draw 2 gifts and wait until the end of his T4 and I play my first gifts...he flashes in Aven Mindcensor and I search the 4 cards...one of which is a PiF. I untap and play my rituals and manamorphoses and I draw a grapeshot. I play the grapeshot flashback everything and play the grapeshot again for the win.
Take Aways
I have no idea what to do with the final slot in the main deck. Noxious Revival was mediocre and SSG hasn't been that relevant...maybe it'll be just the 3rd peer or 3rd Remand. I was also shocked by how many of my opponents thought I was going to fizzle while storming out. Even when it seemed deterministic, they were skeptical I had it in the bag. Lastly, I liked my side deck a lot...there has been talk about using Mueller's strategy, but the white splash plus bounce spells just seems so good.
Hey guys, I had played the old UR Pyromancer Ascension Storm back when I started with Modern, and now I decided to go online.
Since Storm was always cheap, I thought about starting with it one more time, now that it is better positioned,

Any thoughts?
(of course there are no blood moons/scaldings for budget reasons, and I am going for a long run to build Tezzerator there too, so Polluted is mandatory for me)
