Picked this deck up recently online, and I gotta say it's got some serious game. My list is a little bit old school, so I could use a little bit of advice from somebody who's more experienced with a more recent version.
Not a bad list at all. I was out on business for the last week so I haven't had a chance to actually play your list. I do miss Goyf at times, the clock he gives is nice.

Yep. This is pretty accurate. Goyf does have the downside of not living through cloud but he does crazy amounts of damage. The price is an issue for budget lists.

Yeah fortunately I play online where they're a lot cheaper than paper I got the set for $260(65 each) a couple months ago before the modern season started. Goyf can really beat down, but can also just be a huge wall that buys you time to set up a Death Cloud. If you manage to land one after a death cloud it's usually a 5/6.
Since the last time I wrote in this post I have left the dark path of Chalice of the Void (which was working great until the time contermagic raised a lot in every tourney I joined) and added discard to my deck, but anyways I haven't be able to consistently win any match VS control . Seems that any deck provided with countermagic is just too strong for us; we rely on very mana intensive threats wich are easily neutralized by a single Mana leak or Spell Pierce. The deck keeps on performing very well against any kind of aggro decks and even combo (by the way, I've just lost once to Pod; Twin is harder but still favourable), but UWR and specially Faeries seem to be extremely difficult pairings.
In addition, I tested Grave Titan and he really underperformed in my deck. In aggro matches it was just a "winmore" card that comes too late in the game; in the more controlish, grindy games it was staying in my hand indefinetly or just being countered (I always preferred to play Death Cloud instead the Titan). I will surely take them out and try another thing.
Any suggestions to make my deck more competitive against counters?. Is maybe Thrun, the last troll my only option?. Maybe Mistcutter Hydra is too weird...
Yeah this deck isn't ideal for a control heavy meta. You're better suited to a Combo/Aggro/Midrange format.

I think getting STE back is always a good option and maybe the way to go; sometimes I feel I am one turn behind in the game...
On the other hand, usually I don't cloud unless I have a Planeswalker in the battlefield (which happens very often) and by the time I do it the normal thing is having more lands in play than the opponent (that's not true when facing true control decks, whose land count is similar than mine).
Regarding the control matches:
- Choke seems to be a good addition, and has been suggested by other people too; I'm going to try it.
- I already tested Boseiju, but the fact that it comes into play tapped, only produces colorless mana and you need two life to get it work is too awkward.
- The major problem I see with Autumn's Veil this is: what if you cast Veil and it's countered? Are you going to cast DC this turn anyways?. You are forcing your opponent to cast a counter over Veil... but in case he has another counter (or a Snapcaster Mage) in hand, you are probably in serious trouble.
Loxodon Smiters look pretty solid, whenever it reaches the battlefield it becomes a real threat that has to be answered immediately. In addition, it is capable to block Geist and resist Bolt and Electrolyze.
To sum up, I think I need to go back to ramp and I'm going to try Choke as well...

A few pages back you will find a list that I was playing that ran Smiters and splashed white. I really liked the deck at the time but lately people have been asking for non-fetch lists so I was focused on creating those. Choke has been in my lists for years. You may want to try out Smallpox and Duress versus control. I've found that most of the blue based decks have issues when you mess with their mana. You're more than likely not going to resolve a large Cloud unless you use discard on the same turn. The other option is to outdraw them with something like Bob or any of the other black card drawing effects. Lingering Souls is also a good card versus control as most of their non land creatures only have 1 toughness. FOr that matter you can skip making tokens and go with Night of Souls' Betrayal to basically blank all of their treats. NoSB has ton of applications but I always have an issue playing it as our dudes are effected pretty hard by it as well.

With Journey into Nyx spoilers, I was wondering if any cards can be playable in Death Cloud. Pharika, God of Affliction doesn't look great, but it's still an indestructible enchantment that can make 1/1 snakes after a massive Death Cloud. Also is it ok to run a Temple of Malady or two? The deck is pretty slow and grindy already and the scry can be very useful.
AS someone who played this and is currently playing BW smallpox yes i would play 2 temples. They are usually great for me, and rarely do they slow you down.
The fact the token is deathtouch is quite relevant. Not sure she fits in death cloud though. SHe would certainly benefit alot from cards like phyrexian arena, liliana and garruk to get to 7.
It's a great shame that Pharika is mostly terrible. She might be playable, but you'll really have to work hard to use her. I mean, you can clog up the board with her and use all your graveyard resources if you really want to. You can grave hate in a very limited way with her and give your opponent tokens if you really want to. After the board's gone, you can pay BG for a 1/1 instead of turning Village on or -1ing Garruk and getting a 3/3 if you really want to. None of these things seem attractive at all. Functional, maybe, but not desirable. She's probably maybe possibly situationally better than Necrogenesis I guess?
Sadly she seems like a $.50 junk Mythic. Now the BW one would play really well in the deck if we can move to a BW shell. Which I think is actually possible. I have put off working on the update to the Primer as this set along with any B&R announcement will change how the deck works going forward. I really like the idea of Finks and other persist/undying creatures causing multiple triggers and also the value you get out of things like Sin Collector are insane. And since Death Cloud kills so much stufff and the life loss should already be high we are just looking at value town all over the place. Very excited about a possible shift (I've been playing BG for 6 years now so I need a change).

This thread has been dead awhile. I was curious what you guys side in versus Kiki or Melira Pod. I have trouble especially against Kiki Pod because the deck plays the same value creatures like Kitchen Finks and Voice of Resurgence I do making Death Cloud and Damnation pretty worthless. Here's what I side in now and it works alright. However Game 1 is pretty much an auto loss because Abrupt Decay is really bad against their value creatures and Restoration Angel.

Playing BGw I have 2 Putrefy, 6 targeted discard and 3-4 Damnation maindeck as well as and 3-4 Stony Silence in the side; this tends to be enough to beat POD most of the times...

Agreed, I love the Temple of Mi'lady in my deck. I'm looking to get a second one as I always love to see it in my opening hand to smooth out my next draw.
I'm interested in the Slaughter Pact as a one of. What is this mainly used for though? I'm trying to find new cards to freshen up my list. JOU didn't really give us anything except the Temple and Courser of Kruphix was pretty lackluster. I don't want to use too many Standard cards though. Back when Innistrad was still Standard legal, one of my friends joked my Modern deck was half Standard legal especially since I didn't run fetches.
If I were to play Thrun, the Last Troll against UWR, how many should I run? He's currently a one of in my sideboard. Is that alright?

There is also the option of going Life from the Loam/Raven's Crime and try to get them that way. That also allows you to play utility lands and manlands in plenty. Also opening up Engineered Explosives and Buried Ruin as a piece of board control.

Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.
I'm interested in the Slaughter Pact as a one of. What is this mainly used for though? I'm trying to find new cards to freshen up my list. JOU didn't really give us anything except the Temple and Courser of Kruphix was pretty lackluster. I don't want to use too many Standard cards though.
