is there a real way to enable the First Strike/Ninjutsu plan?
Warclub, ninja with first strike, draw/tutor 2nd ninja, sounds fun (and probably bad)
Its not terrible in Pauper, where you can play Ru and use cheap first strike creatures as evasion. I don't think it would work in Modern, card quality isn't there and there aren't enough enter the battlefield creatures with first strike to really enable the strategy. But I'd love to see it work.
im new to the archtype. but what if the deck goes to blue red ninja deck.. red can be a good enabler with all the hasty creature (goblin guide). rather than focusing on evasion. go the beatdown route and cheat in cheap ninjas for card advantage. just my 2 cents though..
Is someone still brewing with the deck? Especially the new 1 drop Faerie looks potent. With Infiltrator and the good old Deep hour guy, we look at a lot of draw potential. Maybe some pitch effects could be included (for example the new one: Force of Despair, Force of Negation). Or even stuff like Collective Brutality.
Am I right, that if you attack with a creature with Smoke Shroud on and Ninjutsu it, Smoke Shroud will go to the graveyard and you are able to enchant the Ninja you just used Ninjutusu? Could fill the place of Ronin Warclub, that some people used.
Lots of stuff to try out, do you think Ornithopter builds are better as 8* 1drop fea (with 4*Faerie Miscreant)?
Yeah, Infiltrator might make this a real deck. It's better than NotDH, and now we have 8 of our best card essentially.
I can't play now unfortuntaly, but when I can this will be one of the first decks I test.

omg I'm SO excited about the new ninjas! I think a key card is going to be changeling outcast: he's an enabler, he's a ninja for ingenious infiltrator, he's a fairy for spellstutter sprite, and we could go as far as saying that he's a wizard for wizard's retort (we have 12 wizards between spellstutter, faerie seer).
very important are also creatures with nice ETB effects to take advantage of bouncing them and playing them again. not only faerie seer and spellstutter sprite, but also watcher for tomorrow which gives us hideaway when comes in, and makes us draw when he goes out (and is a wizard).
Smoke shroud is cool...not sure how constructed playable is.
another card I'd be interested in trying siren stormtamer: enabler, protects ninjas from removal (and is a wizard).

I believe the correct way to build ninjas is to maximize both Ingenious Infiltrator and Ninja of the Deep Hours, the strongest reason why we want to play ninjas. We want to reliably ninjutsu them on turn 2 so we need a lot of 1 drops, preferably evasive and/or with additonal ETB value. The best twelve 1 drop we can play are: Faerie Seer - our premium 1 drop. U for a 1/1 flier and Scry 2 is a lot, especially when it can be recurred with ninjutsu. Faerie Miscreant - another 1 drop that is evasive and can have added value when replayed. Changeling Outcast - very good in a deck with tribal payoff, being both a Ninja and a Faerie.
Then at the 2 drop slots we have: Ingenious Infiltrator - the Ninja payoff, generating crazy card advantage. Ninja of the Deep Hours - the second best Ninja, former number one. Spellstutter Sprite - having 12 faeries in the deck, this does some work.
Other cards to take into consideration are Mist-Syndicate Naga which is a great curve topper and can go very wide by itself if left unanswered, and Force of Negation which is great in a deck with so much card draw and that tends to tap out every turn. Fallen Shinobi I fear is a bit too expensive for this kind of strategy and Smoke Shroud is just not wort as a payoff.
A 2019 Ninja shell could look something like this:
I really Agree with the list above. Personally, I like splashing red for K. Command and Bolt, it adds reach to a rather slow/beatdown/tempo deck. As for the Naga ninja, I think that, without evasion or disruption (beyond only the Spellstutter), it is just bad. The card that could really make it go out of control is Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive, it REALLY takes games away if left unchecked, otherwise, it just gets walled by a lot of creature decks or token decks (even affinity can easily block a non-evasive 3/1). since we do have loads of wizards, I guess we could run Wizard's lightning also. as a 6-8th copy of bolt.

honestly considering the amount of wizards we have I'd play wizard's retort.
I don't know how useful Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive can be. the only creatures we play that have power or thoughness 1 either fly or are already unblockable. now if we play Mist-Syndicate Naga they would work together nicely.

I think Skullsnatcher could be relevant today, since the meta is full of graveyard dependent decks. It's also a 2/1 for only B if ninjutsu is used.
What are people's thoughts on moonblade shinobi? Creates a token each time it hits, or too slow because the ninjutsu cost 3 mana?
I played against an opponent who ran multiple Moonblade Shinobi during the prerelease, and I found the card to be too slow for limited. Its token enable other ninjas, but there are better ways to do that. Its actual battlefield presence isn't all that great, so its mana cost isn't worth what you get given that the deck's ninjutsu "curve" tops out at 3.
so far, the new cards I'm excited to add to my ninja deck are ingenious infiltrator, changeling outcast, and faerie seer. the infiltrator and the unblockable changeling go nicely together. Already ordered 10 kamigawa islands from scg, to add some flavor to the deck.

I had a crazy idea recently. What do you guys think about using the new Ice-Fang Coatl? I think that it having Flash complements the tempo strategy very nicely, and it is a nice evasive body to enable Ninjutsu. Its ETB draw a card acts like a pseudo NotDH effect, and can be repeated when you Ninjutsu it.
Of course, the downside is that it's UG, meaning that the manabase has to stretch a lot to accommodate it. The deathtouch clause will likely end up as flavour text but if it ever does get enabled, it could help against aggro by being able to trade resources favourably by surprise-blocking an attacker and killing it, while you're up a card from its ETB. I'm pretty sure that the deckbuilding cost of jamming in snow lands is too high for this, though.

that's certainly another route that the ninja deck can take. Modern Horizonz gave new cards for us to expand the archetype. And I hope someone continue this thread when we migrate to the new place that the mods are building.
With some minor testings the past few days. Smoke Shroud has been surprisingly good, it's like a reusable "equipment" that equips for free.. currently using 3 in the main. Maindeck Skullsnatcher has been good in a graveyard meta.. yeah, it's underwhelming when you face a humans or any other deck that does not care about the yard, but most of the decks here use the yard.. so 3 in the main as well.
I tried Higure, and he's too slow. Might as well use a fallen shinobi if I would use higure.
Cannot test out fallen yet, because it's still on it's way in the mail.
Originally I had only both drawing Ninjas (Deep Hours and Infiltrator) and a larger counter suite, as well as more 1 CMC flying creatures to enable Ninjustu as quick as turn two.
I found out that while I could Ninja in T2 around 80%+ of the time, and frequently dominated the early game, I tended to lose control later and wouldn't be able to deal the last finishing 5-6 damages needed to win. This version with more Ninjas aims and some Hand disruption aims to prevent that. I am hoping Mist-Syndicate Naga helps me close out the game.
I am not totally sold on Fallen Shinobi yet, it seems too random at times and too expensive to Ninja in.
PS. After some testing, I am definitely will drop Fallen Shinobi. With this amount of Lands I find it hard to use, and I want to maximize my amount of live Spells. The one advantage it has is it is a 5 CMC Blue card for Shoal, but I currently run only 2 instead of the full set.
So hey there guys, Im forsaken I havent actually been putting anything up here in the primer but I've been working on sultai ninjas for almost 2 months now and the deck is finally in a state Im going to start ordering peices for in paper, in the last 4 days the deck has gone 13/4 in w/l ratio however alot of my finding are in the ninja discord, my list my not seem like its works very well at first but the results are there, Its taken down almost all tier 1 decks pretty fairly, There hasnt been a matchup were I felt hopeless on the loss. I've taken humans, red deck wins, pheonix, dredge, amulet titan, u/w control all in 2/0 at least once. If you would like to see more about the list and updates I highly recommend you join the ninja discord. https://discord.gg/EbquAJ
I also have all my games saved as vods for you to rewatch, overall the deck has gone through alot of changes but again its putting results Im happy with and will hopefully building it in paper then traveling for the next major modern gp to hoepfully place in prize pool or better yet, The top 8.
1. Faerie Seer is best enabler. Scry helped so much when i was under pressure from aggro.
2. Ghost quarter almost lost me a game. Had 5 mana, but only one black, so can't ninjutsu a Fallen Shinobi and cast a typhoid rats on the same turn. One Ghost quarter shall be replaced with a swamp.
3. Moonblade Shinobi surprisingly performed well. Creating blockers and dealing 6 damage to one of my opponents before being killed by removal. I only have one in the main, but will up her to two now.
4. We definitely need a wipe against aggro decks. I'm adding one damnation and one languish to the sideboard.
5. It's because my sideboard is obsolete, still had 5 grave hate for Hogaak. So aggro decks were so hard.
6. Goblin Piledriver is a problem, there's one game I lost solely because of that card. Good thing there are not many pro blue creatures in modern.
7. Fallen Shinobi is dope whenever he connects. I won a game simply because he connected twice - with the help of removal clearing the way.
8. Smoke Shroud proved itself very useful. Helps giving evasion to ninjas already on the field, as well as extra toughness making some ninjas bolt proof and tarfire proof.
I recently added the singleton Commandeer because I love the spell and this deck can get away playing it. It replaced a single Spell Pierce.
Snapback has been my removal of choice in this deck because it fits with the tempo gameplay, and it can also save a Ninja. Force of Negation was a great new addition. The biggest bane to this deck is the printing of the Engineered Plague creature. This deck can’t really beat that card. Other than that, the deck is pretty darn good.

interesting synergy between faerie impostor and ornithopters.
Not including the impostors, I see 16 enablers in your list. Is the deck working fine with that?
My own list only has 10 enablers, and might cut them down to 8 when the cards I've ordered from SCG arrive.
Drawing an enabler mid-late game sort of feels underwhelming in pressure situations.
Faerie Imposter is so good. It can rebuy and Ninja if they have a ground blocker, or rebuy any of the etb cards for value. Reusing Spellstutter is amazing, plus Imposter hits hard. DOuble the power of your typical 1 drop flyer, and only 1/3 less dmg than a flipped Delver. Ornithopter is just the ultimate enabler, and it’s not useless with Signal Pest.
The point of this deck is to not go to lategame really. You just want to kill them quick, and counter a few of their early spells that prevent you from doing so.
Cards like a Moonblade Shinobi and Mist-Syndicate Naga seem completely unnecessary. They are slow and there’s no need to be paying 3 mana for a 1/1 token, if you’re drawing tons of 1 mana creatures.
