As can be seen on this forum, many people are trying to get tribal decks up and running in modern, the main ones being merfolk, elves, and goblins. One of my favorite tribes is our good old brain eating friends, the zombies. What are your opinions on the viability of zombies and what decklists for them have you come up with? I'd love to see a viable zombie deck in modern.

Heya Dead it's Wolf, from the forum down the hall.
Good to see you, buddy, how'ya been?
Things have been okay for me, except that I'm a zombie now...
And I don't think my tribe can win.
I think I speak for all of us, I wish that deck could rock.
But we don't stand a chance without... Odyssey and Onslaught block.
So here's an FYI.
This deck ain't gonna fly, sadly...

Agreed, I just don't think Zombies will work well really. Also, did you make that rhyme on purpose?
As I posted in the Innistrad/Modern spoilers thread, Dreadgraf Ghoul is a force in this deck. A one mana 2/2 is perfectly on the curve for a black aggro deck. It's not Nacatl, but then again, Nacatl does not have any lords to back him up in Zoo. Graf Ghoul has 4 lords to back him up, and that gives Zombies an extra kick.
As our 1 drops, I would advocate the following in a deck:
-Aether Vial: Outrageous in a tribal aggro deck that curves nicely from 1, to 2, and up to 3.
-Dreadgraf Ghoul: Vanilla 2/2 beater for one. He's textbook aggro.
-Festering Goblin: He can trade with a turn 1 Nacatl, or murder any of the 1 toughness creatures that are so important in the format, such as Confidant, Noble Hierarch, Lavamancer, etc.
-Thoughtseize: This is the big thing that Zombies gets over other aggro decks. It gets to run maindeck hand disruption. It also gets to run this alongside Tidehollow Sculler in the two drop slot. Speaking of a white splash...
-Path to Exile: If we splash white for Tidehollow, then we definitely need to add the best aggro removal spell in the format.
Once we hit 2 and 3, we curve just as well as Merfolk.
Overall, I think the deck definitely has potential once Innistrad is in full swing; Diregraf Ghoul alone helps a lot.
You could make a MBC deck with a Zombie sub theme. I had one built during Timespiral. I think far to many people just toss the idea of MBC to the side since we don't have Cabal Coffers.

In case I didn't tell you, I don't care about your opinion I just want your facts. And not the facts that make you seem smart. I want the ones that are actual facts.

She's Dark Confidant on steroid, what's not to like?
The main difference between her and Bob is that Bob gets the card advantage train rolling on turn 2, whereas she has to wait until turn 4. I still really like her in a Zombie tribal deck, as she wrecks opposing control decks, but I think she's a 2/2 mb/sb split at max, or even a 1/2 or 0/3.
I think that perhaps when Innistrad rolls around this deck may become viable. It already gets a lot better with a very solid 1 drop in Diregraf Ghoul, who might just make this deck viable - with the lords we're running, he could soon trump a Wild Nacatl or at least trade with it.
I like Adaptive Automaton more, but perhaps Bad Moon could work as a 5th lord? It's one turn faster than our other lords, which in decks without acceleration (Elves), control (Faeries), or turn 2 lords (Merfolk), seems important.

Here is a more G/B Glissa, the Traitor based agro route. It runs Adaptive Automaton over Death Baron for minor Glissa syngeries and death Barron is only really giving death touch.
One other unusual inclusion is the non-zombie creature known as dark confidant he was included for his drawing power.
I ran the knights deck a few years ago at States and I wonder if the reusable removal that the engine gives would be too slow for the format...but it still looks fun.
i think muse is a must, even if at a 2of, the kind of card advantage she makes is jut silly. if you untap with her you should basically win. in a deck this aggressive, the life loss is negligible. I don't think you "need" a 1 drop, you have 12, durress, IoK/thoughtseize and maggot carrier.
ok i love zombies as a tribe, i used to run them back in Legions days, so i would like to see them succeed. Diregraf looks sick and i'm definitely making a standard Zombies deck with Call to the Grave in October, but in reagards to Modern...
There's no easy way to say this, but Zombies cannot possibly beat combo decks, like, any of them. 12-post is retardedly fast and zombies dont have the tools to stop it, you just have executioner's capsule which is good for Emrakul (once) but cant kill Ulamog so you lose anyway. Storm will murder you, Hivemind can outrace pretty easily and counters your best dudes, Living End is kinda funny since you're playing a zombie deck but it makes ACTUAL zombies out of the dead dudes it reanimates...but yeah you're still dead, Melira isnt even that great but its still faster than aggro.
Zoo you can have a standup fight but that doesnt really matter if you want to win a tourney right now you need to be able to beat combo decks, thats it.
Aggro decks cant win tourneys since combo outraces them, even tier1 builds like Zoo get killed too fast to matter.
Here's one thing you can do to kill Eldrazi for good: Geth's Verdict and Executioner's Capsule with Leyline of the Void in play, so they dont reshuffle. AND Sadistic Sacrament. Thats about it.
I really do hope the deck becomes playable in the future though, good luck

However, the big weakness is the lack of good 1-drops. There's only 3 in Modern right now, and none of them are all that impressive.
Thankfully, we know that's about to change.
Right now I'd say zombies aren't viable in Modern, but let's revisit that in a couple weeks, hm?

Undead Warchief + Nameless Inversion made me lol.

...but it has some nice interaction with Lord of the Undead (as does Nameless Inversion)!
^This but with more Graveborn Muse.
