I played Magic between Onslaught and Mirrodin. However, since I haven't played much since Mirrodin, I am practically a new player.
I love constructed and am thinking of playing Magic again, this time in an eternal format. I am close to the Channel Fireball game center, and am thinking of playing Modern there once or twice a week.
To minimize my initial re-investment, I am thinking of just redoing my existing Archbound deck (Mirrodin standard deck)and adding in some Mox opals. However, since I am not familiar with the other decks and later cards, I am afraid that Affinity may be too difficult for me. What do you think? My other option is to get a budget burn or goblin deck that is easier to play.
Any suggestion you can throw my way is greatly appreciated.
You should pick the deck that you think you'll enjoy playing the most. If Affinity is what you want to play, you should go for it. Picking up a deck just because you think it's easier is just going to lead to you getting bored with the deck if it's not something you're interested in playing. Affinity is also a much better deck in the format right now than Burn or Goblins, so once you've gotten enough practice you're likely to be more successful with it.
I can't speak to how easy the deck is to play since I haven't played it much myself, but any deck is going to take some practice to play optimally.

When you peer long enough through the depths, the depths peer also through you.
There's been a lot of new additions to affinity, but if you were able to play the original effectively then that should translate to the modern version. If you know when to sac everything to ravager and go all in with Disciple of the Vault, you'll know when to go all in on Inkmoth Nexus for the infect win. It's mostly about combat math and playing around removal spells.
I jumped into modern with affinity and the learning curve is tough, harder than a lot of modern decks that curve nicely. For instance on turn 2 we commonly have 3 mana, do you pest and ravager or plating or equip? A lot of other decks have 1 drops, 2 drops, 3 drops etc..... that get played at obvious times. I'd recommend burn for cheapness and easy to learn the format.
